“Historic, Great Spot”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Stayed here a while back and remember how great it was. The building is gorgeous in a historic sense, and the rooms are incredibly comfortable. Most amazingly, they are quiet. This is a central location so I was pleasantly surprised to have a quiet night. Staff was nice too

Very nice staff, great restaurants, and very comfortable. Antiques in room were stylish and well done. Great location so you can walk to Durango Silverton train. A little confusing on where to park and unload car but we managed.. Also a white noise machine was in room so was nervous that noise might be issue but thankfully it was not needed and we had a good night sleep.

We have stayed at the Strater before and this time was great, just like all the other times. I am puzzeled by some of the reviews being negative. I can only conclude that those reviewers were maybe not expecting a historic hotel. This is NOT a new chain hotel. It is a historic property that strives to maintain the integrity of the Victorian period during which it was built. If you like that sort of thing, this is the place for you. It has a fabulous location in the heart of town, is walkable to everything and the Diamond Belle saloon is a lot of fun as well. We hung out there and listened to Bluegrass music until they closed. The rooms are good sized, comfy and furnished appropriately for the period of the hotel. Our bathroom was very small with only a shower, so if that sort of thing is important to you, ask about it when you make your reservation.

Room Tip: This hotel is right on the main drag so as in any populated area, there will be some street noise...

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for a night in early November 2013 en route through southern Colorado. We noticed several chain hotels along the road but stopped in a local grocery to ask staff where there was an older hotel with character they would suggest. The Strater was one of 2 such hotels recommended. We called and reserved what we noted as a deal just as good as the chain stays. We arrived to find a very nice old hotel brimming with antique character and very helpful staff. Nicely decorated room with antiques and a view high up over the street for a view. Our room had some history associated with it as noted in a binder, as I assume most rooms would. Great walking location downtown. Just park and stay.
'Would definitely stay at this hotel again.

We checked into our room and had two front boys watch us struggle with bags while it rained. No help. Checked in an got to room and had horrible smell. We let manager on duty Emily know and she said she would send bellman to look into. He came an agreed and got us a fan and deionizer. We then discovered a large water leak coming near wall. We called to speak to Emily and the front desk man said she had left quickly to go home( who leaves when a guest problem is not solved? Strater mgrs do. The smell got worse. The manager left on duty said he didn't know what to do but did nothing. No apology no comp no help and this we will not recommend or come back. Lost us. This is service you will get from managers. Bellman was only guy working.

Room Tip: Not tips here.

The Strater is a quality, older hotel that is filled with antiques and is well maintained. The rooms vary a lot, so your experience will depend on which room you get. We had a Deluxe King (room # 331) which was in a quiet location as I requested. It was very nicely furnished and had enough bathroom space because there was a second sink and counter outside the bathroom. Unfortunately, the air conditioning vent was aimed directly at the head of the bed with no way to change the angle. Consequently, we had to choose between being too warm or having an arctic breeze on our faces. Management could easily fix this problem by changing the vent.

Our dinner at the Mahogany Grill was very good. The restaurant is upscale, pleasant, and not too noisy. Service was slow, though. The buffet breakfast was fine but nothing special.

If you're looking for a quality, old West kind of experience and are willing to overlook some shortcomings, you should be pleased with the Strater.

I chose the Strater because it featured antique walnut furniture in an old hotel. But it is also located in the heart of downtown, along the "main" street. There are lots of shops to look in (including an antique mall) and you can walk to the river and also see the steam engine train go by right behind the hotel. The breakfast (included) is great. It is a full breakfast, made on the premises, not mailed in. You are seated by a hostess. We also ate at Diamond Belle's in the hotel. I had the bluecorn crusted trout and it was wonderful. The costumed waitresses were cute. We attended the Henry Strater Theater for the vaudeville show. It was fun. It was great to have all these activities available.

Room Tip: We had a room on the third floor. The elevator was slow, so sometimes we walked up. But at Durango...
