We stayed at the Strater in September 06, loved the room, asked for it when making this year's reservations and they gave it to us.The staff is most professional. The breakfast (free) has been upgraded from last year (they had silver colored plastic utensils) now they have stainless utensils. They have added some additional hot dishes to the breakfast also.

We are planning to return September 08, if possible. The experience at the Strater is one of the best we have ever had.

We really enjoyed staying at the Strater. If you're looking for a hotel based on location, you can't get better than the Strater. It is right on Main St near dining etc. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and we were surprised at how large our room was. Oh, and our bed was actually comfortable!

We really enjoyed our 3 day stay in Durango and the Strater was great--comfortable, beautifully decorated, period rooms and helpful, friendly staff. Great location, too--walking distance to everything. Our one small criticism was the breakfast. At least they now have china plates and silverware (I was expecting worse from previous posts before we left), but the quality of the food left a bit to be desired. The only fruit was tired-looking supermarket apples and oranges. The special one morning was Oreo scones... I think for the price and the otherwise excellent quality of this hotel, they could provide a top-quality gourmet breakfast. We went to Le Rendezvous on Main Avenue our last morning for breakfast and it was delicious.

This place is just wonderful. Anyone that enjoys staying at classic Western / Victorian hotels will love this place. You don't really need to leave the hotel. It seemed like every corner you turned had another interesting nook to hang around in or explore (its a very big hotel).

We ate at the Mahogany Grille (highly recommended). Very cosy and romantic. Had drinks at the Diamond Belle Saloon - a real hoot with a piano player. There was also the Office Emporium (drinks again). The best part is that they are all part of the hotel and you can get to them without having to go outside. You can also get to the Melodrama theatre from within the hotel (we didn't go).

We stayed in a Deluxe room ($209) - nicely decorated and comfortable. The hotel staff were extremely nice and helpful. Parking is included and is across the street or in back of the hotel. The continental breakfast that's included is very generous and should satisfy most people (it included hard-boiled eggs). The hotel had a Victorian hot tub (by reservation only) but we didn;t use it.

We enjoyed historic downtown Durango very much - it was very interesting to just walk around. We also ate dinner at Season's restaurant (best restaurant in town according to most of the locals we asked) - just down the street from the hotel, and we ate lunch at the Palace restaurant (next door to the train station). Took the train to Silverton - amazing ride, but it was cold since we were in the open-air gondola and the high altitude. If you do the train ride, you have to go eat at the Handlbars restaurant in Silverton. Great food and old west atmosphere..

We stayed as a family in the hotel for one night. the hotel has plus points in the size of the rooms, general ambience, and plenty of staff.

There are problems . Like many US hotels they only allocate rooms to the prerson in front of them at check in. Whereas they may note special requests their ability to deliver is almost nil if you check in late. Nor does arriving early help as they wont allocate rooms until the 3pm check in time. Needless to say that despite booking early we did not get the rooms we wanted. The manger's response was to offer a discount on the room rate, which shows more about his motivation than customer care would require.

Other reviews have said that the bathrooms are small, they're not. Tiny is a better description.

There are plenty of good restaurant s in the town and service is freindly. The breakfast in the hotel has only one redeeming feature, its free, but if you want some thing to eat , eaten from plates with knives and forks etc. eat out.

Finally not really the hotel but the taxi to the airport is a rip off, charging $23 per person for a charmless service and a hand out for a tip at the end. Hire a car, Avis quote $46 for the day so if there's more than 2 of you check it out
