Not sure how New Belgium is the "it" thing. Their beers are okay, but Odells microbrews surpass virtually every style New Belgium offers, aside from their 1554, that's pretty tough to beat. Free beer can't be too bad, and theirs certainly isn't, but given the options Fort Collins offers, I would go to Odells first.

if you are in fort collins i highly recommend making your way over to visit the New Belgium Brewery and take a tour. Everyone that works here is super friendly and really seem to enjoy thier jobs. Our tour guide was awesome and really laid back. You get to sample several of thier beers along the tour and walk through to see all the behind the scenes action in the brewery. if gave me a new appreciation for what a great tasting beer really is... dont miss it!

New Belgium Brewery has free beer, an interesting tour, fun atmosphere and did I say free beer? Just go. In the summer time they frequently have fun events in around the brewery too.

For a REALLY great time check out a bike from the "Bike Library" in the center of Old Town square and hit up some of the other brewerys, too. You should at least hit Odells and Fort Collins Brewery in addition to New Belgium. If you want to ride a little further and have more time you could also include Funkworks, Equinox, Pateros Creek, and Coopersmiths...

Lived in Fort Collins for a couple years, frequently stopped by New Belgium.

The tour of the brewery is interesting, but not terribly exciting. The tour guides occasionally give away a free beer if you can answer questions about the process of making beer so know your beer trivia.

The main reason to go to the "Mothership" of NB is to kick-back in their tasting room and soak up the delicious, free beers and listen to some stories about sustainability from the staff. They always have crazy questions you have to answer when placing your order, which makes the wait worth it (sometimes the room is overflowing with people), but try to avoid high traffic times (weekends, evenings).

Enjoy, and give the bike on the wall a whirl!

P.S. - Though buying beer at the brewery seems like a rational decision, if you are logical stop by any local store and get it cheaper. Odd, but true.
