“Free gardens open year round”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2013

Perennial Environmental Research Center is a hidden gem. Want to get ideas for what works in Colorado gardens? Then swing by, anytime & any day. You can also stroll thru an arboretum at the same location. Did you know that magnolia trees will grow in Colorado? Plant Select xeriscape plant trials are located here, as well as trials of fruit trees, shrubs, deciduous & evergreen trees, perennials, grasses, new plant introductions, etc etc. Interesting year-round but lovely to visit from April - October when there is always something in bloom. Be sure not to miss this on your next visit because it may not be here forever -- sadly, this treasure is the proposed location for a new football stadium. While the deal isn't "officially" done, it appears the fix is in so see it while it is still around.

“Interesting excursion”

My first visit to PERC was fantastic. If you want to observe a wide variety of plants, this is for you. There were plants whose leaves shriveled up at the touch, mango trees, beautiful orchids, and all kinds of other student projects. There are even USDA studies on aquaponics systems and test areas for obscure (but interesting) plant-growing innovations. Also, one of the waterers there, Nick Drury, is an excellent tour guide. Be sure to ask for him if you go!
