On a very busy weekend, there were no rooms available. As we sat in the comfortable lounge with local papers, an interesting selection of borrowable books, and the usual travel info, we overheard a call at the front desk with a cancellation. We got the room, were welcomed with the desk clerks names (verbally, no on name badges), and started exploring wonderful Fort Collins. This was the best time of our Colo vacation - the town is hip without the down and outers of Boulder and Denver. There's all kinds of stuff to do downtown and we were thankful that we never had to use our car. Will definitely return.

Room Tip: Book well in advance.

The Armstrong is a historic hotel in the heart of Fort Collins, CO, that has been fully updated with modern amenities. Our room featured two beds (in two separate rooms with a door between them) and an oversize bathroom. The beds were uber-comfortable, the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating and they offer complimentary bikes for those touring the town (and plentiful local breweries). They even let us keep our car parked in their overflow lot until we had to head to the airport in the evening. Be sure to greet the hotel ambassador Oreo at check in.

I have stayed at the Armstrong Hotel several times over the past few years and this is one of my favorite American hotels. From the super friendly welcome when you walk in the door, to the most comfortable hotel bed ever - I know I'll get a good nights sleep whenever I stay here. Rooms are spacious, comfortable and well appointed. Important to me - the Armstrong also has a great sustainability program. There are literally more great restaurants nearby than you could ever need, and everything is within walking distance - perfect if you drink more cocktails than you should! The Gillette Bar downstairs is also a treat with its frequent live music (don't worry you can't hear it upstairs at all), great cocktails and food.

This hotel is in the heart of Fort Collins and close to everything. There are tons of restaurants and plenty of night life. We stayed in one of the suites in the hotel and it was by far the best hotel of our whole one-week trip through Colorado. The furniture looked like it might be antique and there were hardwood floors. Our room had a full kitchen. The bed was so comfortable and even though you are on one of the main streets downtown, it was extremely quiet. We also really enjoyed the hotel cat - Oreo. She was always up for a pet and ear scratch when we went downstairs to the front desk. And the staff was superb! They were so friendly and accommodating and made us feel like welcomed guests. I can't recommend this hotel enough.

It was all about location. Plenty of nice cafes, bakeries, restaurants nearby. We could walk to several microbreweries. The room was very clean, quiet, and pleasant. We stayed for 4 nights while my spouse worked at a downtown office location. The hotel made our stay smooth and fun.

We enjoyed our stay at the Armstrong Hotel.

We booked room #307 (modern king suite). It was very spacious & gave us a separate bedroom & sitting room complete with TV, small refrigerator, microwave & desk area. There was no door between the bedroom & sitting area. The bathroom was small, but it was functional. The room was on the corner, which gave us views of College Avenue and Olive Street (well, the trees on each street).

The room did provide a full size coffee maker & they did give us enough coffee for one pot of regular & one pot of decaf. The coffee was provided in a small spice jar. The first day, we used a portion of the jar & realized that it wasn't enough coffee. The second day, we used the entire spice jar & it made a better pot of coffee. (There were no measuring implements.) The shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap & hand cream were all in bulk form in containers that were mounted in the shower and on the wall next to the sink.

They try to conserve water, so they did include a card that stated that if you want to reuse your towels to leave them on the towel rack. Unlike other hotels that we have stayed at, they really meant this! They did leave us fresh towels on the bed. This was fine with us, as we try to conserve & recycle when possible.

The elevator was interesting. It was very slow, so we ended up taking the stairs after our initial elevator ride. The staircase on the bottom floor was curved & very pretty. On the way down, there were fresh flowers in an alcove on the wall.

There was a sitting area with some games & books at the bottom of the staircase. I did see the cat (Oreo) one time, but he was sleeping, so I did not disturb him.

The staff was friendly.

The hotel was at the end of the "main" street, yet it was in walking distance of lots of restaurants & shopping. I had read the reviews & saw that it had the potential to be noisy. We did hear some street noise & did hear the train a couple of times. It did not keep us awake though.

There was a coffee shop right next to the hotel (I think it may have been right below our room) as well as a couple of restaurants. Old town square was only a couple of blocks away (definitely within walking distance).

Fort Collins is definitely a college town, so there was a young vibe throughout the area.

I purposely wanted a unique experience when I was booking a hotel to stay in for a wedding that we would be attending. The Armstrong definitely has a good location, right in the heart of 'old-town' Fort Collins, which is a very charming locale.

You could walk up to your room on (I suspect) the original staircase, or take the elevator, which might have also been the original one. When you got to your floor, you couldn't help but notice that the door to each room was most likely the original ones in the hotel.

The floors in the room were all natural wood (possibly original?)and the one traditional window in the room, looked out on the windows of the other guests, but of course, did have a curtain. Since the Colorado nights are often cool, it was a shame that we couldn't leave the window open, but there was some loud mechanical sound coming from down below, so that wasn't an option. The room did have a free-standing a.c. unit, and it did a good job of keeping the room comfortable. The bed was nice and we slept fine. There was a desk with a chair, for those business people who need a place to do their work.

The closet was ample with a shelf included for making your coffee/tea. And there was also a TV in the room.

The only negative I had about our particular room was it did not have a tub, and only a shower. But, it was a VERY spacious shower. You could have had a whole family shower in it at one time. (well, almost) The sink/toilet area was on the opposite wall, and it was all very clean and functional. Other people in the hotel did have a tub -- just depended on which room you got.

One of my favorite things about this hotel, was there was a very nice restaurant right next to the hotel, which featured vintage decor. However, the food was very upscale and quite tasty! We ended up eating there both mornings. Outdoor seating was available, which was very nice.

The price for the room was rather high, and is not featured on the online booking sites, but I guess we were paying mainly for the experience. One nice feature for you cat lovers was the hotel cat, who was very well behaved and hung out in the hotel lobby.

And one last comment: the hotel does charge differently, depending on what day of the week or weekend you are staying there. So make sure you understand those different charges before booking.

Room Tip: Maybe get an 'outside room' rather than one that looked out on the other rooms.
