Now let me start with the positives as I want to be clear that this is a balanced and fair review.
The purpose of our trip was to go skiing over a ten day period at the Vail resorts and Copper Mountain
The location was great for access to the I70 and the road up to Breckenridge. In the past we have stayed in Frisco, but tended to be off of Main Street in a condo. As this year there was only two of us as we found that an hotel would be a more cost effective option. The room was a nice size and was reasonably well equipped, with one major item missing, which I will come back to later. The comfort of the room was fine, but the air conditioning unit was very noisy and took some getting used to. Breakfast was included in the price, but after an initial foray on our first morning we decided it was a better option to go next door to Safeway’s, get some breakfast rolls and coffee from Starbucks. For the purpose as a cost effective ski base the hotel was fine and had we had an uneventful stay I am sure that I would have delivered a more upbeat review.
Now back to the missing equipment, the room did not have a safe. Now like most people I guess we travel with a lot of electronics and in our case, travel documents which included our passports. When we found there was no safe we enquired at reception if there was a security facility and they said that there was not in the room but there was a safe in reception where we could leave valuables. Obviously for everyday items that you don’t want to take to the mountain this is not a practical solution. The passports did accompany us every day but some of our electronics remained at the hotel. About half way through our stay we discovered that a mobile phone and a Samsung tablet computer had gone missing from our room. We reported the loss to reception and were promised that they would look into what happened and get back to us. We followed this up with reception over the course of three days and despite promises never received any management follow up to what was a disturbing situation. The interesting thing was that the two devices that went missing were not screen locked, where as an IPad which was also left in the room had a secure screen lock. The indifference of the staff to our situation was disappointing to say the least and in the end we decided to try to forget about the issue get on with our holiday.
I must admit on reflection there were a number of security issues relating to the hotel which were of concern. The side access to the car park was permanently open and did not require a room key to gain access. In fact we only came through reception once during our ten day stay. It would have been possible for anyone to access the corridors of the area we were staying in within the hotel without passing through reception. In our corridor there was a fire hose point with no fire hose. I am not positive, but I seem to recall that fire doors were also open in the corridors.
If you have valuables they are probably safer left in the car than in an unattended room. On leaving Frisco we did report this incident to the local Police as we were not sure that the Hotel had taken our issue seriously and that if someone else was to experience a problem there would be a record of a previous issue.
By the way we did have a great ski vacation. As for this hotel we won't be comming back.
