“Out of the Ordinary”
Reviewed 17 September 2009

It’s fun sometimes when traveling to stay in a place that’s a little different than your standard run-of-the-mill hotel, motel or condo, especially in a place as full of character as Glenwood Springs. Hotel Denver is a historic property (built in 1914) that’s been renovated and updated more than enough to meet today’s standards of comfort and quality.

WHAT WAS GOOD: There was lots of space in our two-room suite. With two queen-sized beds, two full baths, a sleeper sofa and plenty of floor space, we never felt cramped….Room amenities nicely blend the modern with the historic. It’s nice to enjoy antique furnishings while still having such comforts as a refrigerator, in-room coffee, internet service, etc….Towels, linens, toiletries and furnishings are all quality stuff….Decorative touches like exposed brick, nicely finished wood floors, etc. make the rooms here stand out from your standard hotel accommodations….The location in town in excellent. You can easily walk to everything….It seems as though other reviewers have experienced a mixed bag in terms of noise. We never heard a sound….The brew pub, accessible directly from the lobby, is great!

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER: We thought the staff could have been a bit more welcoming. Nothing bad, just not overwhelmingly friendly….Services are a little lean here (no concierge, business center, pool, etc.) but you probably wouldn’t expect to find those things in a property like this anyway.

THINGS TO KNOW: The hotel is located just steps from the train station. Getting here by rail would be very easy….Parking is located on a side street around the corner from the main entrance. You have to unload your stuff out front then park your car. There’s no bell staff….The hot springs are a short walk via the footbridge. The staff will provide towels (you check them out and back in). They’re better quality than those offered at the pool (and free of charge)….Glenwood Springs has lots of good restaurants but the Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company at the hotel shouldn’t be overlooked. Food, service and atmosphere are all excellent.

BOTTOM LINE: Glenwood Springs is a great place to spend a day or two and Hotel Denver is a smart choice if you’re looking to be in the center of town and to avoid the cookie cutter chains.

My husband and I stayed one night here. I wanted to like this hotel more than I did. I enjoyed the fact it was not a cookie cutter hotel. The hotel has some history which makes it fun. The room was very small for the price of about $150. The room was paid for in advance as it required a deposit of the first night stay ( and only night). It did overlook the river by the train station. Yes trains go through town at night so bring earplugs if that bothers you. It was a funky little place in the downtown area. We ate dinner at the brewpub next door which was good but loud. There were several other places to eat in easy walking distance. Overall it was not a bad experience but it was not the best value for the money

I had a rate (package - Room with a Brew) confirmation and they decided that what I already paid (one night's stay - package rate) plus taxes was not adequate. They charged me an additional $79.00 which they say is for the package part of the deal - passes and coupons. Which was no where near the $79.00. This charge was also made after the fact because they couldn't give me a reciept due to the fact that they did not know how to correct the bill when I checked out. They never gave me a receipt when I checked in or out. They did however charge my card for an amount I never confirmed or agreed to pay. Be careful. They also laughed at me when I questioned their charge, saying their rooms have never been that low. Even though I had it on my confirmation I really didn't find it a laughing matter. Basically they said they were sorry that I was confused and that the letter (confrimation) was confusing. Just be careful that what you have in writing (confirmation) may not be what they actually will charge you in the future.

Stopped here on a road trip, staying in Room 308. This was a great suite, lots of room for two large, antique double sleight beds, plus double sofa bed, dresser, table and chairs, small kitchen, plus ensuite. If you like something a bit different from the corporate style this is great! Floors a bit wonky, furnishings antique and traditional. Very welcoming staff, grab a coffee, piece of fruit or crunchy bar from Reception in the morning, bottles of water on Reception all day. Great brew-pub attached which serves good food in a relaxed atmosphere. Quiet location but right in town and 5 minutes walk over pedestrian bridge to Glenwood Hot Springs. Hotel is opposite the station and we would have seen the California Zephyr but it had been diverted for summer railroad repairs over the mountains. Excellent hotel, good value for money. Wouldn't bother paying extra for room with atrium view as the other room was so lovely anyway.

My two grown daughters (20s) flew in from far corners of the country, to do a "girls getaway" 2-day road trip with me from Denver to Glenwood Springs and back to Denver via mountain roads. Our only reservations were for massages at a spa, and the Hotel Denver for one night. I found a coupon on line offering $25 off the room rate, a credit in the attached steakhouse, and 2 passes to the hot springs pool. No mention of a charge for this deal, either on the coupon or when I booked our room by telephone. When we checked in, however, we were charged $53 for this "deal," and the desk clerk said it only reduced the room charge by $12, not $25.

We did like the room and the atrium; I had not wanted a chain hotel. The food was good at the steakhouse, and we loved the hot springs pool and walking around Glenwood Springs, discovering much we hadn't seen in previous stops enroute to someplace else. But the hotel experience did not add to an otherwise great visit.

We traveled to Glenwood Springs on our honeymoon. We stayed in the Penthouse- a beautiful spacious room with an amazing panoramic view of the mountains. The room was lovely, spacious, and relaxing. Things we didn't like: the walls were paper thin (could hear someone in a neighboring room talking on the phone word-for-word). They also put a hold on our bank account at check-in for the amount of the stay plus 15% that did not come off even after we paid for the stay on another card. Not the best for honeymooners that just paid for a wedding.
For as spacious as the penthouse was, there were two tiny garbage cans and two highball drinking glasses. Not too ideal when bringing in your own champagne.

first off, we like to travel to retro motels and historic hotels. We are not high maintenance or fuzzy travelers. We roll with things, travel is about adventure and we don't expect everyplace to be a 3 or 4 star hotel. We've stayed in Glenwood a lot (on way to Palisade for Wine Festival), it's a groovy town. Hotel Denver was not what we expected. It is two building connected (some atrium done in late 70s Mod?) While it had a great old bed, brewery attached and a great view of the train station, Hotel Colorado and river/mountains, the rest of the room was a motel 6. steel doors, the bathroom (again motel 6) and the false overhead ceiling (right out of an office bldg). overly large flat screen tv. the room was big, but not historic as we had hoped. hallways had beautiful furniture. if you ever take the train from Denver (or anywhere else) the hotel is right across the street. the staff was friendly and had toiletries that i had forgotten. so that was great.

going back to the bed. it was actually the best part of the room besides the view. hand crafted quilt. I wouldn't pass on the hotel, but don't expect retro or historic. oh- we where able to take drinks up to the room from the brewery (it's off the main lobby).

Overall, If you are looking for an historic 3 star, this isn't it. But if you are looking for a nice comfortable clean place with nice views of the river, this works really well.
