“A little gem.”
Reviewed 3 April 2010

We pass this hotel and the Glenwood Springs Pool every year on our annual trip to Aspen and have often wished we could stop and explore the town and pool. This year we did.
I booked the Hotel Denver by mistake, thinking it was the hotel next to the Pool complex. It is in fact across the river, a 5 minute walk over the footbridge. However, the hotel more than made up for the lack of proximity.
It seems to be a renovated warehouse that has been lovingly and beautifully turned into a very comfortable and different hotel.
Rather than your standard cookie cutter rooms (a la chain hotels) each room has been carefully decorated with period furniture that reflects the atmosphere of the building.
Our room on the second floor (there are only two floor of bedrooms) had two queen sleigh beds a huge dresser, a smaller dresser and two very large, comfortable relaxing chairs. There was a table and two chairs as well. THe large plasma TV was mounted on the wall facing one of the beds.
The bathroom was a little small, but spotlessly clean.
Our room overlooked the river and the pool.
Parking is across the street and you need to check in at the desk to find it.
There aren't facilities for breakfast but several places just around the corner. THere is a nice lounge and a glassed in TV lounge on the main floor, as well as a hair salon and shop.
The Brew pub is accessible through the lobby. We enjoyed a good meal there. (nothing fancy but huge portions and good service). If you like beer there are several to try and I recommend the sample platter of 10 four ounce samples for $10.
The staff at the hotel were very accommodating. We had a slight mix up with the room when we checked in but things were taken care of quickly. The king size room with sofa bed we saw looked absolutely lovely, but as we had two teens with us and each parent was going sleep with the child of the same gender, neither parent wanted the sofa bed and we had to move to a room with two queen beds.
The hotel will loan you towels for the mineral pools (well worth a walk over and a very relaxing soak) which saves you $3.50 per towel at the pool.
Overall, this was a very pleasant stay in a comfortable spacious room that beats most chain hotels hands down. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Our room had hardwood floors and old-fashioned quilts on the beds. There was plenty of room in the 2 Queen bed room, a large table & chairs, plus two easy chairs. We liked it well enough to stay a 2nd night. The staff was friendly. I was happy that there were no porters, but the carts were available for us to use. Parking is off-site, about a block away.

We wanted a unique experience in a historic and charming hotel. We found that the building has little to no charm or character, nobody greeted us at the door or told us where to park, the desk staff was silent, and the hotel has a general odor of mustiness. Overall the place was just old, and what we felt that we were not adequately compensated for the high room price. If you want a unique experience in a true historic charmer go to the HOTEL COLORADO across I-70. That's where we will stay next time.

The Hotel Denver was recently renovated in 2008 and the responses from our guests could not have been more positive. It has been our goal to NOT be a run of the mill hotel and we pride ourselves in being very comfortably out of the ordinary. We are located in the historic district and we feel that it is necessary to preserve that atmosphere and feeling and the vast majority of our guests appreciate this preservation and return again and again because of our history and our rooms. I am quite surprised (and apologetic) that this guest did not feel welcomed or instructed. It is our daily goal to provide the highest level of customer service with every one of our guests. We are a seasoned and committed staff with the sole intent to provide very favorably memorable experiences for all that visit us.

For Thanksgving this year we decided to take the Amtrak to Glendwood Springs,CO. The train ride was very fun, and our hotel, The Hotel Denver, was right across the street.

We received a warm welcome upon walking into the hotel, and were told they had been expecting us and our room was ready if we wanted to go right up. The lobby was clean, and beautifully decorated for the holiday season.

Our room faced the river and train station, so we were a bit apprehesive that it might be noisy with the train going by, but the room was so nice with a large screen tv, we decided to see how things went..

After unpacking we went for a stroll through town and walked over the footbridge to see the hot springs pool. We are in our 50-60 somethings, not entirely unfit, but wanted to see how long that would take to get there. It was a breeze! Maybe a 5 minute walk, tops!

All of the most popular restaurants are within a 5 minute or less walk of the hotel.

Then we walked back toward the hotel, stopped at Juicy Lucy's for a snack (margarits's and amazing onion rings!), then back to the hotel for a nap.

Later we went to dinner at the Riviera Supper Club (Early Bird Prime Rib dinner only $15) at the recommendation of the hotel front desk clerk who also made our dinner reservation. After dinner we went back to the hotel to change for an evening at the pool. The front desk clerk saw us leaving and made sure we had our pool passes and gave us big towels to dry off with (otherwise you have to rent a towel at the pool). When we returned the front desk clerk again greeted us with a smile and asked if we had a good time. He then advised us that they would have coffee, juice and pastries in the lobby the next morning.

The next morning we slept in as the bed was quite comfortable, and realized we had not woken up once due to train noise. We went downstairs and enjoyed coffee and pastries sitting in comfortable chairs in the lobby.

Upon checking out the front desk supervisor, Kana, thanked us for choosing the Hotel Denver! I poinht that out because it wasn't like a robotic response...she said it like she genuinely wanted us to come back...the way you'd say to a good friend.

Anyway, this hotel is incredibly convenient to everything, the lobby was clean and beautiful, the room was clean and quiet, the bed was comfortable, the shower was wonderul, the service was amazing, and we will ABSOLUTELY make the Hotel Denver our hotel of choice when going to Glenwood Springs.

This is a wonderful romantic hotel...a good place to take your sweetie to for that special get-a-way.

We had a great room on the 3rd floor, corner. Very quiet. The train station and I70 were across the street but we heard very little train/car noise. The staff was friendly and helpful. They allowed us a late check out to coincide with the train departure. The coffee at breakfast was delicious. Snacks and water all day.

The lobby area is comfortable for sitting and relaxing or waiting for family & friends to gather. All in all a great birthday/anniversary celebration stay.

It’s fun sometimes when traveling to stay in a place that’s a little different than your standard run-of-the-mill hotel, motel or condo, especially in a place as full of character as Glenwood Springs. Hotel Denver is a historic property (built in 1914) that’s been renovated and updated more than enough to meet today’s standards of comfort and quality.

WHAT WAS GOOD: There was lots of space in our two-room suite. With two queen-sized beds, two full baths, a sleeper sofa and plenty of floor space, we never felt cramped….Room amenities nicely blend the modern with the historic. It’s nice to enjoy antique furnishings while still having such comforts as a refrigerator, in-room coffee, internet service, etc….Towels, linens, toiletries and furnishings are all quality stuff….Decorative touches like exposed brick, nicely finished wood floors, etc. make the rooms here stand out from your standard hotel accommodations….The location in town in excellent. You can easily walk to everything….It seems as though other reviewers have experienced a mixed bag in terms of noise. We never heard a sound….The brew pub, accessible directly from the lobby, is great!

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER: We thought the staff could have been a bit more welcoming. Nothing bad, just not overwhelmingly friendly….Services are a little lean here (no concierge, business center, pool, etc.) but you probably wouldn’t expect to find those things in a property like this anyway.

THINGS TO KNOW: The hotel is located just steps from the train station. Getting here by rail would be very easy….Parking is located on a side street around the corner from the main entrance. You have to unload your stuff out front then park your car. There’s no bell staff….The hot springs are a short walk via the footbridge. The staff will provide towels (you check them out and back in). They’re better quality than those offered at the pool (and free of charge)….Glenwood Springs has lots of good restaurants but the Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company at the hotel shouldn’t be overlooked. Food, service and atmosphere are all excellent.

BOTTOM LINE: Glenwood Springs is a great place to spend a day or two and Hotel Denver is a smart choice if you’re looking to be in the center of town and to avoid the cookie cutter chains.

My husband and I stayed one night here. I wanted to like this hotel more than I did. I enjoyed the fact it was not a cookie cutter hotel. The hotel has some history which makes it fun. The room was very small for the price of about $150. The room was paid for in advance as it required a deposit of the first night stay ( and only night). It did overlook the river by the train station. Yes trains go through town at night so bring earplugs if that bothers you. It was a funky little place in the downtown area. We ate dinner at the brewpub next door which was good but loud. There were several other places to eat in easy walking distance. Overall it was not a bad experience but it was not the best value for the money
