The visitors' center where you start is very interesting. Plan to take time to walk the entire place and you'll find many things to see. It's all gravel and rock so wear good walking shoes. It was in the high 90's when we were there so it was extremely hot. You'll be outside the entire time so be sure to go when the weather is nice, but not hot. Seemed to be a better place for adults than children.

Great Museum to see. Multiple cars, engines and museum to see on static display. The museums does have two working engines and takes loops around the property. Fun to ride in an antique rail car from the 1800's. All restored and continued work on other cars.

For the railroad enthusiast, there is a model train area with about 6 different lines running. Very cool for kids and adults alike.

We took our almost 5 year old grandson to this and we wondered if he'd enjoy it. After being there for a few minutes, we didn't think he'd ever leave.
There are many railroad veterans that work as volunteers or actually work on the trains themselves - rebuilding, retooling, painting, etc.
Our grandson went into the very big wheelhouse where they are working on trains and a volunteer just struck up a conversation and our grandson was mesmerized.
Later, he found another trainman working on oiling and cleaning a large locomotive and he stopped to talk with our grandson, let him "polish" a wheel, etc.
There were lots of school age children there as well and they all seemed pretty charged up.
We would definitely go back with our grandson.

The place also seems to draw people that used to work with the railroad companies. We met someone who brought his own grandson and he was explaining how the locomotives worked and which one was used for plowing or clearing or hauling.

Very nice place - highly recommended.

The excellent rating is only if you like trains. Plan a visit to coincide with the museum's steam-up days when vintage steam locomotives haul passengers around the perimeter of the property; ride in the caboose. Lots of older locomotives (steam and diesel), working steam locomotives, a round house and turntable, specialty stock (snow plows). Many are available to climb on/in. A large G-scale layout on the property and HO scale layout in the basement. Not surprisingly, the focus is on Rocky Mountain railroading. Often hosts Thomas the Tank events as well. Great railroading research library. The museum is always seeking to expand and improve its collection. Free parking. Located 5 minutes east of Coors Brewery, which has its own railroad operations.
