“Winter wonderland”
Reviewed 9 January 2014

We spent a winter weekend at Snow Mountain Ranch trying lots of new things: cross country skiing, ice skating, tubing, the climbing wall… there is so much to do here! Perfect for families - our boys are 4 and 7 and they loved it. We stayed at the Indian Peaks Lodge, which is a very basic, comfortable room. No TV in the room, which actually was great, and we had no trouble getting wifi. The highlight of the trip for my boys was playing in snowdrifts up to their waist, and seeing two young moose when we took a dinner sleigh ride. The cafeteria-style food is decent, lots of selection and always healthy salad options. If you're looking for a luxury stay, this probably isn't for you, but if you want to get out and do a lot of outdoor activities, try out new things, make some great family memories - this is a great place to stay!

The YMCA of the Rockies is the best place to spend your winter or summer period! We stayed 7 nights in a cabin surrounded by pine trees covered with snow and scenic views of the mountains. During our stay our family did the following all on the property: snowshoed, cross country skied, tubing, rock climbing, rollerskating, floor hockey, indoor soccer, dog sledding, and archery.... The list goes on and on.... We recommend this place in the summer and winter if you are looking for a quality vacation with tons of activities.

Stayed here over New Year's week. LOVED our stay. So kid-friendly and family-oriented. Lots and lots of great activities that the kids loved. They used the Craft Shop, holiday activities at the library, and fun kiddie-oriented New Year's Eve noon party (at 11am). It's near Granby Ranch, which is not crowded and conveniently close.

The room at Indian Peaks Lodge is standard. 2 queen beds and sofa bed fit our family of 6 fine. But be aware that it's not super clean (not dirty either, just basic cleanliness with some dusty). The housekeeping services are clearly amateurs (we found another guest's bill underneath our bed). They were supposed to make our beds and take out the trash every day of our stay. But they didn't do anything the first day, and after we inquired at the front desk, they only removed the trash and very sporadically made the bed. They didn't bother to vacuum even when there were obvious crumbs on the ground that needed it. The worse part of the stay was the awful, subpar, unhealthy food. The cafeteria food contained mostly processed foods that tasted poor. The fruits were good- but very poorly washed (found dirt and other grainy, gross stuff at the bottom of each fruit pan). Even the grill (by the front desk) contained all processed foods.

Despite the food issue, we loved it and will return for future visits. The pros far outweigh the cons. We'll just be sure to bring food items that we can cook via microwave and hot water (there is a very convenient hot water/coffee/tea machine in the lobby of the lodge).

We stayed here to watch our daughter's X-country ski meet. We had been here years before to use the campground, which was very nice. On this trip (we are admittedly older), the place was beautiful, but not the least bit peaceful. We stayed in the aspenbrook lodge, and the rooms are not the teeniest bit sound proof. there are lots of families with children making plenty of noise until well after quiet time. Beware that check in "between 3 and 6" does not mean you can check in then - it means that is how long you might have to wait before being permitted to check in. Rooms are very basic- no frig, TV or coffee maker. You will get a bar of soap and plenty of towels. Breakfast is included, and might be good if any of it was warm. I highly recommend getting a cabin and cooking your own food, as what is available at the grill and the commons is not very good and incredibly overpriced. On the plus side, there is an enormous number of activities. If you can't find something to do here with your family, you have a serious problem. The X country and snowshoeing trails are terrific. The staff at the Nordic center is great. On an inhospitable day, there are crafts and a library. In short, this place is great for families. If you want a really nice room and great food, look elsewhere.

We couldn't recommend this facility more! So many free activities and ways to engage in nature...even with little ones!!! You won't be disappointed. We especially recommend cross country skiing and dog sledding.

I had low expectations going in, knowing that ski lodges tend to not be too fancy, but was very disappointed in lack of maintenance. Our room was on the ground floor & the sliding glass door would not lock. We had maintenance come to fix it twice, but they didn't fix it either time. We ended up wedging a chair in the door just to cause some barrier or resistance. The drain in our tub was also clogged up. You ended up standing in a tub full of water when showering & a full 30 minutes later the tub was still draining. The grossest thing about this is black hair was coming up the drain & every member of my family is blond; thus, it wasn't our hair. Again, maintenance failed to fix it. Finally, the trash cans in the common area of our lodge were full & over flowing by 2pm, but no one ever emptied them. Breakfast was mediocre at best. On a positive note, there were were tons of activities to participate in and do while on property.

Let's face it, you don't want to pay over $150 a night for a basic hotel room. We chose this place because it was a warm place to stay with a warm breakfast in the morning. The ambiance is not exactly luxury. It is pretty campy here. We liked that you could sleep up to 6 people in Silver Sage lodge. There's a microwave in all the lodges in the common area so you could bring your own food. No frig, but who needs it when it's winter and 1 degree outside?

I liked:
1. Cheap
2. Parking easy and close by.
3. Buffet breakfasts starts at 7am (you only get two free tix with your room, the rest of your party will have to buy) - but you do have to walk outside to another building to get it.
4. BEAUTIFUL surroundings!
5. Feel safer than on the side of the main road in a motel. You have to drive in a ways to get to the main lodges.
6. Microwave was available.
7. Sink was separate from the bath and commode.
8. There was good, free wifi access.
9. Close to ski areas.
10. Even though we didn't take advantage of them, there were a ton of free activities for families to do. We'll have to come back and plan on a full day just at SMR.

I didn't like:
1. The rooms are oldish and very dark. Can they do something about updating the lighting so it's not so gloomy both in the common areas and hallways? It's kind of depressing.
2. Our room was on the main level right next to the common area. It was full of people talking and having a great time, but if you wanted to sleep before 10pm, forget about it. The lodges were full this weekend and so everyone's buzzing about making noise.
3. No TV's in the room (but there is a phone).

Room Tip: Try to be away from the main common area if it's a busy weekend.
