“Nice, laid back Beach Hotel with a Scandinavian Touch”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

One of the nicest places to stay in Arugam Bay although right on entrance of "the strip".
Danish owned and managed by a Danish team. Very accommodating and helpful.
Nice and tidy rooms, with a bottle of chilled white wine waiting for you in the minibar! Ice cold water refilled in a thermos regularly as part of the service. Continental style bathrooms
The restaurant is pretty good to and you can ask for real Hansa Coffee in a cafetiere.
Also a good place to while the time away with a good book if you need to get out of the sun or if it is raining.
Would not hesitate to stay there again any time.

Room Tip: Book early to avoid disappointment during busy times.

After a week of touring Sri Lanka with a guide, we were very much ready to lose the tour groups and 'samey' buffet food in place of a rather more chilled-out pace of life for the second week of honeymoon. I was a little concerned after reading some reviews (including that in the Lonely Planet) that the team at Stardust were somewhat unfriendly. We certainly didn't get this vibe on arrival when we were greeted with warm smiles and well needed cold fruit drinks. Although the manager isn't overly 'in your face', she's a quiet and unassuming lady who clearly takes a lot of pride in her business. Her nephew Sophus is there helping for the summer season and he's been great to us throughout. We opted to stay in one of the cabanas and were given one in 'Rainbow Village' with only two other neighbours. The cabana faced out to the ocean and you could hear the waves rolling in each night. Of course there were also the sounds of palm squirrels and birds but that only added to the atmosphere. We were expecting the cabana to be fairly basic which it was, but there was a lovely homely charm to it and we loved the feeling of being truly away from it all. The team at Stardust had put lovely flower petals over our bed as well as a huge vase of flowers in the room to celebrate our honeymoon which was a really sweet touch. We loved the private yet open air bathroom where we could hear the wildlife outside whilst showering (as well as sharing the shower with the odd frog!)
We didn't suffer with lack of air con as the ceiling fan worked great and slept in just light sheets. In terms of activities - we rented Stardust's canoe which we spent a good couple of hours paddling out into the nearby lagoon with - again for great wildlife spotting. We also booked a tour to Kumana National Park (formally Yala East) through the hotel and throughly enjoyed. On our final couple of days we hired bikes from a shop about 5 mins up the road from Starduat called 'Ecowave' which supports local farmers and communities. For 400 rupees each for the day (about £2), the bikes were a total steal and we cycled miles on them - to some more secluded beaches and also to another nearby national park where we saw many elephants on the journey. The walk from Stardust to the more swimmable parts of Arugam's beach takes around 20 mins along the lovely sand or parallel road which we didn't mind at all. In fact, we much preferred the location of Stardust to some of the backpacker resorts closer to the main beach - we couldn't imagine staying down the other end of the bay with the parties and loud music (showing our age we know!) Breakfast at Stardust was lovely with lots of options and GREAT coffee. We only ate in the restaurant on a couple of evenings however as we preferred to explore the many other eateries and bars in Arugam Bay (Siam View our fave for spicy Thai food and great music). I did have grilled fish at Stardust one eve which was delicious. Only slight negative of our stay (and this really is a tiny thing) was that a few of the staff were a little on the slow side when serving/arranging things, but all were very friendly. We loved our stay at Stardust and would definitely recommend to others :-)

The Stardust Hotel has a lovely location overlooking the beach although it is on the edge of town & a 15 minute walk to the main area. We had a first floor room with a balcony overlooking the sea, which was the best aspect of the room. The room was clean, however, it was very basic with no air con & two very noisy fans, which on our first night stopped working in the early hours of the morning. We felt that the room was overpriced given the fact that it had basic amenities and cost US $80 per a night and did not include breakfast. The food at the restaurant was average and expensive, however, it was a nice setting for a drink in the evening. The staff were unfriendly compared to our other experiences in Sri Lanka including Arugam Bay. Service was slow and we were treated as a room number rather than guests and on a couple of occasions the staff were abrupt towards us. Overall, the stay was average based on value for money and we would stop elsewhere in the future.

Stardust is a nice hotel and with a very nice restaurant, nicely decorated. We stayed in the family cabana and it was very nice with open air bathroom. (with frogs :-))
Startust i in the end of the beach and to swim you have to walk about 30 minutes or take a tuktuk. But it is an ok and quiet place, right beside the lagune.
The food i nice and the staff is well trained, and very correct. You could get informations about what to do from the management. The staff and management was pollte, and perhaps a little to polite and correct, and the managers was very busy, so there was no small talks about Sri Lanka.

If you have the cash, splash out and stay here. The villa is lovely, clean and spacious. This place has three great features, fantastic staff, great yoga team and brill customer service. The manager Sophus (hope the spelling is correct) obviously understands how to run a hotel, big thanks to him!!!!!! Don't miss out!!!!

I went to Arugam Bay for surfing and yoga and found out only stardust provides the service when we were there, mid May. However you must call the hotel first to check whether class is on for that day. I did Vinyasa Yoga class and it's really good. Love the location and the instructor all together. Stardust also provides massage but you need to call to book and check on the availability 1 day ahead. That was a bummer as we don't have much time to do that and we're actually looking for other types of massage than Ayurveda and they seem to be the only place you can get it on Arugam Bay.

If you need a good proper coffee, come to stardust as apparently I found that they served the best Sri Lankan Coffee here. I was in Colombo trying to get the coffee but didn't have time to find it, and found it in Arugam Bay Stardust Hotel!! Try and google 'the best Sri Lankan Coffee' and you will find Hansa Coffee on the top search. And it's REALLY good! I had black coffee and that's how I like it.

We stayed at Stardust for 10 days & enjoyed our stay.
Staff were extremely friendly & helpful (unlike what the Lonely Planet says!) The hotel was always kept extremely clean & the breakfast which was included in our stay was fantastic.

Our only problem was that as surfers we found it very tiring walking from the hotel to surf (main point) each day especially in the heat. They say it is only a 15 minute walk but it really is 30 minutes to get to the main point. We ended up taking tuk tuk's occasionally to help our legs. This costs 150R for one way trip to main point. The tuk tuk drivers at Stardust are amazing & help you out as much as possible & charge a competitive price for their services. They always turn up on time & wait around for you if you surf other local breaks in the area.

There also isn't air conditioning so if you stay in the main building it is good to leave your door open to let air flow through when possible.

Hot water showers are also now available in some of the rooms. You do have a quiet beach out the front to swim at (with no fishing boats) but when we were there it was quite a big shore break so wouldn't be suitable for children to swim at.

We didn't do the yoga classes available at the hotel but they seemed to be very popular with people streaming in & out of them each day.
