“Close proximity to downtown & the Alpine Loop”
Reviewed 26 August 2007

This was our third time staying at the Matterhorn and as in the past, our stay was quiet and enjoyable. The close proximity to the start of the Alpine loop, walking distnace to downtown shops and restaurants and the pleasant owner make this a place to come back to. Its location on the base of a hill sometimes provides wildlife viewing. Highly recommended !

This is the second year my husband and I have stayed at the Matterhorn. The first year we were in a room with a kitchenette and this summer we stayed in the first cabin. The new ownership this year was just as friendly as the old owners. We enjoyed our little cabin for it's comfort, porch and cleanliness. The kitchen had everything we needed. We appreciated our privacy but did enjoy speaking with the owner and her friend that is working there. This was an enjoyable vacation that helped both of us unwind.

  • Liked — The relaxing atmosphere, pet friendly, very clean and friendly staff.
  • Disliked — We would have enjoyed a king bed but the queen bed was very comfortable.

This was our second summer staying at the Matterhorn Motel. Prior to our arrival, we were a little worried because it was under new ownership; however the new owner, Terry, was wonderful. She has a long time friend, Delinda, helping her. Both were interesting, funny and laid back. Our 12 year old daughter loved going down to the office to visit with Terry, Delinda, Kristyn (Terry's daughter) and Lucy (their dog). It was so comfortable staying there, like staying with old friends or family. We love Lake City and each time we visit we meet a few more interesting people. The locals that we meet are clearly fond of Terry and are happy that she has returned to this charming little town. The rooms are still just as clean as always. We can't wait to go back next summer.

Husband and I stayed at the Matterhorn for only one night in July on a whirlwind tour of CO, but we are returning for 3 nights the end of September. Lake City is a small mountain town in a drop-dead gorgeous area of the San Juan mountains. The Matterhorn is a small, privately-owned establishment, as I suspect, are most if not all of the motels, cabins, etc. in the area. It is well maintained and our room was very clean and spacious (2 queen beds and sofa). Although, the bathroom is a bit small and the shower is very small...again spotlessly clean. The owners provided recommendations for a variety of restaurants in town...great selection for a small town. All were within easy walking distance of the motel. Chairs are available outside of each room to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet. A ceiling fan would have been a nice addition to the room, since the air was warm and still that night. Also would have helped mask the person snoring in the room next door! All in all, a nice place to stay in Lake City.

  • Liked — comfy beds; cleanliness (!!); location in the town
  • Disliked — very small bathroom & shower stall; room needs a ceiling fan

Poorest lodging experience ever. Starts with a barrage of Do's and Dont's from management, including not to "disrespect" them by leaving any trace that you have been there (like crumbs or water spots).. Wow, I thought you were allowed to be comfortable on vacation, but not so here! You are being closely watched and will be scolded for the very least infraction.

Not that the motel is all that great. The well-used bed slants to one side, so my honey had to sleep on the floor. We were too warm in the room, so we had to leave the windows open because there is no fan or A/C. The fresh air was good, but unfortunately, we heard dogs barking and guests chatting right outside our window all night. And the crunching of the driveway gravel as cars come and go made it hard to sleep.

This place is a little like the Bates Motel in our estimation. Kind of spooky too because it is located on the edge of town halfway up a hill.

There are, apparently, some very nice B&Bs in the area, if you don't mind spending the $$$, but we have never wanted to spend that much money.

Matterhorn Mountain Motel seems to be a quite nice alternative. It is not the least expensive motel in town, but it costs less than the pricey B&Bs. And unlike most of the motels in Lake City that are on the main highway running through town, this one is at the end of a quiet side street.

It is a one story buildiing, so there will be no one clunking around overhead. In fact, it is very quiet, with the majority of noise coming from cars driving past your room through the gravel parking lot outside the motel.

It is 1940s era, I believe, kinda funky/fun exterior, with very well maintained rooms that are clean. Some of the rooms have kitchenettes and they rent for the same price as rooms without kitchens, I believe.

If you stay here, the owner will rent you his jeep for adventures around the Alpine Loop and nearby.

Very nice owners (though they are currently looking to sell the place). We've stayed here 3 times in the past 2 years.

Oh, and we have a lot of fun going to the nearby A&A Pasta Factory Restaurant. It is run by Italians (some of the servers don't speak a ton of English), who make great food, and make every meal a real pleasure. The owner is extraordinarily friendly and outgoing. We eat here whenever we are in town.

Lake City is quite small. You can walk from the motel to the restaurant.
