Great location, amazingly friendly down-home proprietors, and the perfect relaxing family get-away! Jim & Nita and staff are so friendly, considerate, and helpful with anything and everything.
The cabins are clean and nostalgic, with mid-century rustic furnishings--it's not luxurious, but very functional and tidy--the perfect nostalgic family cabin! Everything functioned flawlessly, and we were very comfortable our whole stay, even with temps ranging from 40-80 while we were there.
The cabins are stocked with all the kitchen apparatus you need for a weekend or a month--just bring your own food and you are set. The town has both a small country grocery store (produce is a little slim) and an amazingly well-stocked organic grocery store next to the museum.
If you don't want to cook, there is a nice array of restaurants in town. I have to say our favorite breakfast was at the Sportsman "Hutch's" which is a quirky no-frills gas station, tow/repair, general store, and cafe, all-in-one. Try the biscuits and gravy!
Pleasant View rents Jeeps and ATV's right on their property--very nice, new and clean equipment. You simply MUST get up on the Alpine Loop and other awe-inspiring viewpoints and historical sites. There are also jaw-dropping gorgeous hikes all around.
There is a great boat/kayak/canoe/bike rental place in town: The Sportsman Outdoors (also do tours and fishing trips)--clean, well-maintained equipment, even if not the most cosmetically perfect. Very knowledgeable and professional staff. And Lake San Cristobal is spectacular!
Do the Hard Tack Mine Tour--what a great find! 40-minute tour is very fun and educational. Amazing displays, nice gift/souvenir shop and fun for the whole family. We also partook of the mini-golf, touring the historic downtown (tours and self-guided walks available), and driving up to Slumgullion Pass and stopping at the info displays for the amazing geology of the area.
With all of that, my favorite was simply sitting on the rocker on the porch, watching the deer wander through, the kids playing, and soaking up the clean air and great views. You can never spend too much time at Pleasant View Resort and Lake City--we add a day or two to our stay every year! Most relaxing place in the Southwest!
