I'd never stayed in a hostel. What a great surprise. Like being at a friend's house with a group of highly interesting guests. Accomodations of all types from bunks to private rooms. Guests of all ages, types and interests. Lot's of outdoor enthusiasts and athletes from ultra marathoners to bikers and hikers. Very clean. The owners have done an amazing job with this property. Highly inviting seating areas inside and out. Beautiful flowers. Self serve kitchen or meals provided. Washer and dryer. WiFi. Artsy, unpretentious, draws a certain kind of person who thrives in a communall environment. Long history of repeat visitors. Books up quickly so be sure to confirm reservations if your mind is set on staying there.

Room Tip: Many options from bunks to "couples"" rooms which are private but share a bath to roo...

It is a very clean, clean, clean place to stay. It is large and luxurious by hostel standards. There is a vixon (female fox) and kits (young foxes) living near by. Howard is a great host and he hails from a very good part of the country.

Room Tip: There is good hiking and a bicycle trail up 7th from the LODGE

Read the reviews about this place and thought it may be a little off-beat but, it turned out awesome! Bill makes you feel right at home when you first enter. This is the only place to stay if you are an outdoor enthusiast, as their are many renters who can provide info on the area. You can bring your own food and prepare it yourself, keep it in the fridge or on a shelf. They have 2 large TV's, a pool table, wi-fi, a place to work on your bike and much more! Wish we could have stayed longer in Leadville and at the Leadville Hostel!

Room Tip: They do have some private rooms, but the dorms are more than adequate.

The owner Bill and his partner are rough diamonds with a great sense of humour who love to josh with guests. R&B music plays in the background all the time; the kitchen facilities and lounge area are great; rooms are basic but comfortable and clean.
Free WiFi and computer access are standard; during the Tour de France the big telly was on the race most of the time, so it was good to keep in touch with our heroes.
Good location well away from the noisy main street

Room Tip: better off upstairs; these rooms have more light and air

I spent a night here before a solo training run. Having stayed in many hostels before, I figured on a cheap place to spend the night and not much more. Instead, I found a charming, cosy, and very welcoming place. Bill and Kathy have created a special environment where young and old adventurers mingle with families, ultramarathoners, through hikers, honeymooning couples, and mountain bikers. The showers are spotless, the beds comfortable. The kitchen is open for guest use, which allowed me to eat a healthy dinner and save money at the same time. As an added bonus, the large communal dining table is a great place to meet new friends with some very interesting stories to share. This camaraderie continued the next morning, when Bill cooked up a pancake and egg breakfast for a bargain price. Yes, there are rules, but mostly self-evident ones that allow the hostel culture to thrive. No, it is not a hotel -- it is something quite different, and in many ways better. I will definitely be back.

Room Tip: The downstairs rooms are in a basement without much natural light, so if that bothers you, stay upst...

I have visited several hostels across the US, but Wild Bill and Cathy's Hostel in the middle of the Rockies in Leadville,Colorado, is the best, by far. The place is a haven for hikers, mountain and road bicyclists, through-hikers on the nearby Continental Divide and Colorado Trails, backpackers, peak baggers (14ers in every direction), and other recreationists, individuals, couples, families, and groups who want a relaxed, clean, organized, and very friendly atmosphere. Several returnees come back to the hostel for the summer, year after year - it is that good. The kitchen is well organized with everything you need to prepare your own meals (and Cathy has an herb garden and provides basil and mint for the DIY chef, in season). If enough people are staying there, breakfast and dinner may be prepared by the Hostel at a very reasonable price. Indoor bike and gear storage, a flat-screen TV, a pool table, and local guidebooks and information add to the convenience and experience. Pay washers and dryers are available, as is an outdoor clothesline and clothes pins. There are rules, but they are for the enjoyment and safety of the guests - quiet hours are enforced and the kitchen and premises must be kept clean. Cathy and Wild Bill are outstanding hosts, and create a friendly and welcoming place to stay overnight, a week, or longer. But make reservations early - The 41 beds can fill up fast, especially in the summer and on weekends.
