“Best Family Vacation Ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2011

The view of the Rockies was stunning, but it was the wonderful people at Peaceful Valley Ranch that made this an unforgettable vacation. We loved everything about Peaceful Valley Guest Ranch. My husband and I wanted a special vacation for our 15 year old daughter. She loves horses and was in heaven at PV. The counselors were wonderful and made the time on and off the horse eventful and full of fun for her. There were many activities for my husband and I who are not horse enthusiast, but best of all, we knew our daughter was in the very competent hands of the counselors when we chose not to ride with her. We stayed in a cabin and were very pleased with it, the hot tub was a nice touch. The meals were great. I just can't stress enough how friendly, helpful and sincere everyone was. We can't wait to go back next summer

I first visited Peaceful Valley around 1965' and every year for years until 1975. now visiting again some 41 years later, not much has changed. Good food, great horses, goats, a sheep and a very friendly donkey, all out in a pasture, for parts of the day. In the morning about 40 horses come down from the upper pasture with a wrangler In front, and a wrangler in back. This is the old west, rustic, and picturesque! It is not luxury, but if you come here it is like going back in time, complete with breakfast on tin plates prepared fireside at the top of a mountain, For me it was a total stress reduction and get away, which was exactly what I was looking for. The lodge sits adjacent to the picturesque St. Vrain river, crashing from the glacier nestled on a mountain above.

If your looking for luxury this is not the place, but if you want to experience the old west, as it was, then this is the place. ideal for artists, horse and animal lovers, to commune with nature. Not commercial but rustic, and a real trip back in time. I heavily recommend it, especially for the solo cowpoke in ya!

I really hesitated about reviewing this property because we were at the Ranch for a wedding...which was absolutely fabulous and beautiful. Tthe bride and groom chose this location and I really appreciate why they did -- the scenery is gorgeous.

Okay, having said that...this place is described as "rustic"...I think that is just marketing speak for "run down, kinda dirty, average buffet meals, expensive, yee-haw!" We were in a cabin that had stained carpet, ant traps in the closet (ew!), mosquitoes, and weird scummage (is that a word?), in the hot tub. Sure, a nice touch to have a hot tub in all the cabins, but ick!

We paid a B&B rate -- so we were entitled to their buffet breakfast, but being that it was ONLY served from 8am to 9am, we missed out. (In my opinion, vacationing means not having to wake up to an alarm clock just so you can run down for a mediocre breakfast...but I know there are morning people out there that would have no problem with this strict time requirement.) With this B&B deal, we were also charged a mandatory 15% gratuity on our final bill....15%? For what? For a breakfast we didn't eat? Maid service that we opted-out of? And the 15% was based on the nightly hotel rate, not the price of a meal, so it was a very hefty charge!

A family member stayed in the main lodge and although I did not actually experience for myself, I was told that the size of the room was laughable and the walls were paper thin (they heard snoring in the next room).

The staff seemed adequate, but seemed a little put out by simple questions or requests. Is that another aspect of being "rustic"?

All in all, if you are heading here to attend a wedding...GREAT (the chapel at the top of the mountain is breath-taking), but perhaps consider staying in Lyons. The price of RUSTIC is just not worth it!

Room Tip: Some of the further cabins do not get wifi.

We had booked a weekend with meals included but decided to leave after first night.

It was simply a big disappointment. The place did not correspond at all their website and were told only when arrived that there was nor petting farm neither horses. So no really a point going to a ranch with a child, is there? And we paid full price, 150 dollars per night.

We were staying in the main lodge, very old and not clean. Carpets looked like 50 years old.

The food was terrible but must say that most of the personnel was friendly.

We went to Peaceful Valley for a wedding with a group of about 40 people. The cabins are big and nicely put together - but low in accessories (no iron, no cork screw or bottle opener -- had to ask at the front desk, where they were more than happy to find them for us, but it was odd that the kitchens in the cabins didn't have any utensils -- they do have hairdryers though). No TV in the rooms, and only Verizon cell phone service is available so it's truly a 'get-away' place. However, the food was great, the place was really clean, the horses were well looked after and the pool and hot-tubs well maintained. Definitely rent a car and don't limit yourself by just doing the shuttle bus. Also altitude sickness can be common -- bring medicine just in case!

I have stayed at two other guest ranches and this one was a big disappointment. At the other two ( one in Colorado and one in Idaho) there was a nice lodge with a front porch with views. This ranch's lodge was rundown and tacky. Instead of wood floors, there was carpeting that looked to be at least 20 years old and in need of some deep cleaning. There was no porch or mountain views although the back of the lodge faced the creek. The cabin we stayed in was similarly tacky and in need of updating. Again the old indoor/outdoor type carpet which was in need of a deep cleaning. In our bedroom the screen did not completely cover the opening in the window, allowing moths to enter the cabin. Fortunately there were no mosquitos. In the morning after our first night I found a spider in the sink and a dead bug in the shower.
The meals were only one hour 8-9am in the morning, 12-1 for lunch and 6-7 in the evening. Every meal was buffet style. At the other ranches the meals were served family style and were excellent. The food here was mostly acceptable (just) however one day the food was inedible. Except for the cook, I did not find the staff to be particularly helpful or friendly. My kids and husband enjoyed the riding but they did not rave about it like they did with the other ranches we visited.
For the price ($375 a night which did not include the riding) this place fell way short of expectations.

Family reunion of 47 people ages one to 93. We were given a schedule of meals and what to expect and they did not come through. First nite many people were coming in after dinner and they asked if they could make up dinners, the food was there people, and they could not. The chef gave bags of trail mix from the gift shop for dinner. Second nite we were promised prime rib and salmon, we were taken to their off site bar b que area for burgers and brats. When a family member asked if he could stay in the restaurant and have the promised prime rib and salmon he was told no. Third nite we were told a "creek side bar b que." They over booked and put us in the swimming pool, which meant eating our dinner with the subtle smell of chlorine. We then were given 90 minutes around the campfire that was to be ours the entire evening due to their error and at 9 pm they threw water on the campfire and said it was over. So much for quality family time.
Not well kept up, lights dimmed, its a fire trap, only one staff member was nice and helpful and he was brand new. Food very poor, they don't believe in real vegetables lots of starch and meat was very unappealing.
Oh and their internet was down. Oh and it was over $200 a nite.
