“Perfect for a family”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

Great place at a very fair price. $99 for a room with a separate bedroom, and a door! If you have kids, you know this is a huge bonus! The room we stayed in had a double bed in the main area (along with a TV, fridge, microwave and window a/c unit) and a double bed in the separate bedroom which also had a TV, desk, closet and window A/C unit. The Days Inn and Comfort down the street were in the $125 range just for a regular room. El Colorado also has a large pool, picnic tables, grills, and is less than a 5 minute drive from Garden of the Gods. Skip the chains and head here.

Overall satisfied for a budget vacation. Pet Friendly. No real issues. Get what you pay for. Comfortable, Clean rooms, friendly staff, most of the things you need. Extended family (kids, parents, grandparents) stayed in 3 different cabins for 1 week. Each cabin had different kitchen utensils/pans so made cooking difficult. Some kitchens not very modern. Pool not heated while there. Volley ball court has no net and grown over with grass. Wood-burning fireplaces not available during summer. Very small refrigerators. Four-acre grounds mostly covered by asphalt and between two main roads. Playground is a bunch of small (toddler) toys. Very close to Garden of the Gods and Red Rocks open space.

While spending the night in this motel, my husband awoke at 2:00 a.m. itching uncontrollably all over his body, so much so that he could no longer sleep. We turned on the light to discover that he had bug bites all over his body. We then looked on the bed where he had been laying and found a small bed bug which my husband immediately smashed. Blood smeared on the bed when he smashed it which was confirmation that it was a bed bug. Needless to say we were horrified. We then continued to check the bed and found multiple more bed bugs as well as more blood smears. We caught one of the bugs in a small plastic baggy to show the hotel manager. We immediately walked over to the main office which was closed. We rang the emergency bell and the hotel manager came to the door. I told her that there were bed bugs in our room and she immediately said, "That's impossible!" So I showed her the bed bug in the baggy. She took it into the office and looked at it closely under a desk light for about five minutes. She insisted again that it was impossible then asked to come to our room to look. We eagerly took her to our room and after inspecting the bed with her, we found another live bed bug. She then pulled all the sheets off the bed and threw them outside. She came back in and sat on the bed cross-legged which we thought was extremely odd considering we just found bugs on the bed in front of her. She kept saying that this didn't make any sense THEN accused us for bringing them to the hotel!!! We were in shock... We immediately started packing our clothes into plastic bags that were extras in the room garbage cans. After filling those few small bags, I asked her if she had any additional plastic bags since we didn't want to put our clothes (which may now have bugs into our car without a barrier) and she replied with a snippy, "No." I was appalled. After packing I grabbed a pen and asked for the motel owner's name. She rudely said that she's the co-owner and the managing owner. I then asked her for her co-owner's name. She still refused to give it to me. I just kept asking calmly again and again. She finally gave me some information. She gave me her name and the owner's name (who she said is her husband who lives in Houston) but no phone number. She continued to sit on the bed and watch while we finished getting our things out and continued to tell us that we brought the bugs which was not true. She said she has a great exterminator who she's used before who she will call. I then asked, "So have you had beg bugs here before?" to which she replied, "Absolutely not!" We asked for a refund and she flat out refused to refund us. She told us we "weren't being very gracious" and said we needed to leave immediately!?!?! All of this was just adding insult to injury. As if it couldn't get any worse, my husband had an allergic reaction and had to go to urgent care clinic twice, once the day of and again a week later. The day it happened we called an exterminator who walked us through how to kill any bugs that may have tagged along in our stuff or on our bodies. I am traumatized and have continued to have trouble sleeping since. The manager told us she would contact us within three days to let us know the results of her exterminator who would determine whether it was us who brought them in or if they were already in the motel...we haven't heard a word since.

"NO SIGNS OF BED BUGS IN CABIN 11" reported by GLOBAL PEST CONTROL 6/17/14. If the guests had bed bugs, they brought them in. This was their 2nd night of lodging. Possibly enough time for the bugs to come out of their luggage. We have not had any complaints before or after these guests departed. We have an annual contract with Global Pest Control. I had reported this incident to Manitou Chamber of Commerce. Susie Brock

Smaller but clean and staff was very pleasant. Not many ammenities given here, but nice view. Absolutely LOVED the kids play area however. Gave us a great day to just swim and let the kids play basketball or ride bikes. Perfect for a family get away.

These rustic cabins are small but cozy. The room was very clean, and I enjoyed the Indian/kokopelli motif. The staff was very gracious to us. We were able to stay within our budget of $50-70 due to seasonal discounts. There was no hairdryer or coffee pot, but they did have a fridge and microwave. They didn't charge us extra for our dog. There were little benches on the property for enjoying the outdoors. It was very convenient and we even had a fireplace! I love this spot and would've stayed longer in a heartbeat.

We were at the Lodge on Feb 7-9 , the Lodge was exactly as expected, we had cabin #27 . The staff went above and beyond in service. We had a very late check in and they waited up for us. The only minor point, no shampoo, but not an issue since we had brought some. The fireplace was great . We will be back when it's warmer and perhaps see some wildlife . There are other choices for lodging, perhaps some "nicer" but the level of customer care and service was outstanding!.They truly make you feel like family . We will return in April !

Room Tip: If available, they will offer options as to what cabin you may like

We stayed at The El Colorado Lodge this past weekend and enjoyed it as usual. my mother from North Dakota and my family stayed in cabin 25 and could not have been more pleased. We had requested extra blankets and pillows and all was waiting for us already in the cabin. It was a extremely cold outside but stayed toasty warm and cozy. Having a fireplace in the cabin set the mood. The kitchen is fully stocked with pans, dishes and baking sheets which we took full advantage of..The El Colorado is very close to the Garden of the Gods and quaint shops so we kept busy but could not wait to get back to our cabin to relax.. The owners and staff go all out to make their guest feel at home. We are already looking forward to next years stay..
