“Terrific B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2009

Right on the main street of Manitou Springs, this B&B is easy to get to. Breakfast was wonderful. Gwenn and Randy are the delightful owners. Our stay was the week before Thanksgiving and even though it was a bit cold in Colorado, our room was just fine, slept nicely, warm fireplace and private bath.

Very reasonable price and certainly worth another stay.

We really enjoyed everything here: The breakfast is outstanding-don't plan on eating anything else all day! The rooms and common rooms are comfortable and very pretty. Recently remodeled Victorian, a few details to be finished, but don't let that stop you! We are happy with the location (Main Street) and all of the amenities!

The Avenue Hotel is everything that a B & B should be. It is called a "hotel" due to an historical reference when it used to be a boarding house in 1886. But this is 2009, and renovations and modern amenities make this B & B outstanding today. The rooms are very large, comfortable, and clean. Many windows provide natural light and fresh air, while air conditioners are provided for those who prefer it cooler. The decor is tasteful without being cloying, the way that some Victorian B & Bs can be. Men will not be overwhelmed by overly feminine appointments. An artful balance exists between traditional and Victorian themes, while an abundance of art pieces ties everything together. The proprietors, Gwen and Randy, are also the owners, and they are on site. I have learned that owners make better hosts than hired managers; they have a vested interest in your satisfaction. Gwen and Randy are friendly and knowledgeable when it comes to suggesting restaurants or things to do in the area. If you call ahead with your arrival time, a fresh pot of coffee and homemade cookies will waiting for you. The downstairs area provides 3 rooms for leisure gatherings, the dining room and 2 living rooms. There is a computer room on the 2nd floor for your use, and a snack bar on the 3rd floor, where cold soft drinks and granola bars, pretzels, and crackers are available. The breakfasts are scrumptious and filling. Location, location, location. This B & B is located on a raised hill right on the main street in town. Noise is not a factor. You will be able to stroll right out the front door and down the avenue for some shopping, dining, and people watching. What more could you want? The Avenue Hotel B & B is the place to be.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast in Manitou Springs for a week. After much research on the web, we decided on this hotel for the location and price. This was our first experience with a bed and breakfast and was not sure what to expect. We were not disappointed. We stayed in the Ruxton Room, one of the larger rooms at the hotel. We were greeted by Gwenn when we arrived. The room was just as pictured on their website and the common areas were decorated in a Victorian décor.

The next day we got up for breakfast. Coffee was already brewed. I poured a cup and was pleasantly surprised at the taste. The blend was smooth and not bitter. When I asked Gwenn the brand of coffee she told me it was the Cabin blend roasted by a local coffee merchant and explained a bit about their roasting process. I found that interesting and poured another cup. After the third cup it was time for breakfast.

I was expecting the typical low end continental breakfast served at corporate hotels. I was wrong. The breakfast was served on nice china at 0830. Each morning we had a fresh fruit cup generally consisting of a mix of peaches, apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes, and/or pineapple served with a topping. Again, this was fresh and not canned. With the fresh fruit cup, orange juice and a from scratch muffin or coffee cake was served. I thought that was it for breakfast and I would be hungry in about an hour, but I was wrong again. The main breakfast course was served after we finished our fruit and muffin. Every morning the main course was different and delicious such as a stuffed croissant with eggs, breakfast quiche, frittata, or a baked pancake with fresh peaches and link sausage. A cup of warm, real maple syrup was available to top the baked pancake. Many of the ingredients used in the meals come from the local farmer’s market on 24th Street in nearby Old Colorado City. If you are in the area on a Saturday from June through October, take the time to visit the farmer’s market. It’s quite impressive and very busy. If I were to sum up the breakfast fare, I would say fresh, simple ingredients are used to cook an elegant and healthy meal.

The hotel is located in the heart of Manitou Springs, yet high above Manitou Avenue. Restaurants and shops are all within walking distance. The service Gwenn provides is excellent. One rainy, cold afternoon we were going to leave the hotel just for coffee. Gwenn asked us where we were going, and we told her. She told us there was no reason to go out just for coffee and she would make us a pot. Gwenn said she wanted a cup anyway and it would be no problem. I’m not sure Gwenn really wanted a cup, but it was nice of her to make us feel as though we were not imposing. It kept us from getting out that damp afternoon and her generosity was much appreciated.

In summary, the high speed secured Internet worked well. The room was spacious, clean, had a small refrigerator, HDTV, ceiling fan, and heater. The evening cookies were a nice touch. The common areas are roomy, comfortable, and supplied with various magazines and local newspapers. Both Gwenn and Randy are very knowledgeable about the local area and surrounding areas including Leadville and Cripple Creek. The hospitality and breakfast were both outstanding. I most highly recommend the Avenue Hotel B and B.

I had never stayed in a B&B before and wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this was the BEST choice we could possibly have made! Our room was very roomy and gorgeous and Gwenn and Randy made us feel right at home. Gwenn is an AWESOME cook - breakfast was absolutely delicious every morning, not to mention totally filling! Manitou Springs is beautiful and Avenue Hotel B&B is right in the middle of everything, so we were easily able to walk just about everywhere went. And, if we had questions about what to see or do, or where to have dinner, all we had to do is ask; Gwenn and Randy know the area very well and never led us wrong. They were also never too busy to chat for a minute on your way out or ask how your day went when you returned. It turned somewhat cold while we were there and after a day in the cool mountain air there was always a nice warm place by the fire and a hot cup of tea to warm us up. By the end of the week it felt like staying with family. I can't wait to go back and I would definitely recommend the Avenue Hotel B&B to anyone and everyone!!

A very nice place. Newly renovated. In spite of the fact that they think they can beat the Yankees, I highly recommend this place.

I will never forget my stay at the Avenue Hotel, which was also my first B & B experience. The innkeepers, Gwenn and Randy, are very friendly, accomodating and helpful. The hotel is very well maintained and you can tell right away that Gwenn and Randy take great pride in what they do.

The room we stayed in is the Canon. It has a full private bath, two separate rooms with large beds in each and a great view of the mountains surrounding Manitou Springs. I loved the clawfoot tub, fresh linens and unique toiletries. The breakfasts were amazing and the available water and other snacks were very much appreciated. It was nice having access to a computer with internet and their well-behaved pets helped me not miss mine so bad. Also, the rates are unbeatable for the experience you will have at The Avenue Hotel. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we HAD to stay another night. I would have gladly spent my entire trip there if I could.

The location is perfect. As others here have stated, the hotel manages to feel secluded from town even though the quaint shops and restaurants are located only steps away. Sitting out on the front porch in the early morning/late afternoon with a hot cup of tea was very relaxing.

Gwenn and Randy helped us discover some great places to visit while we were in town, too. She told us about some nice places to hike that we did not read about in any of the many travel guides we had with us. She even wrapped up some muffins to take with us on our travels.

Everything about this place is truly wonderful. I've never felt so at home before, even when staying with family! There are other places to stay in Manitou Springs, but why bother? It doesn't get any better than this!
