We had been wanting to try MHCC for some time, after seeing the menu. There is a lot of variety on the menu, plus specials to increase your dining options. They even START your meal with a nice basket of bread [hint, hint MacKenzie's].
POSITIVES: The food far exceeded our expectations. I had mussel/scallop linguine in champagne cream sauce. Five half-dollar sized scallops and eight mussels, perfect pasta and yummy sauce. Dinner included a large side green salad made with nice fresh mixed field greens. The balsamic vinaigrette was excellent. Perfect size to split two ways. Partner ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and haricot vert. Huge steak, perfect preparation, potatoes and green beans A+. The gravy was the best we've had outside of the Casa de Rebel. Too stuffed for dessert, so took a pass. Tip of the Toque to the chef; especially his light touch with the salt. Food prices are a very fair value, considering the quality and quantity.
NEGATIVES: The room is run by a bunch of young twenty-somethings who seem more intent on chit-chat. Our waitress went AWOL for an extended period, during the meal, and nobody wanted to pick up the slack. The main dining room was closed [on a Friday night?], so you are relegated to "the Pub". I guess because it's a "Pub" in a country club, you're automatically committed to ESPN. Don't worry about the fact that you can't see either of the two TV's, because the audio is really, really LOUD! So you'll get all the play-by-play of the skate board contest, followed by a boxing match. MHCC is a really neat setting, with great food, but don't confuse the "Country Club" atmosphere with fine dining. Hmmmm, maybe they deliver.
Oh, almost forgot the adult beverages: $9 for a call vodka/tonic, $8 for a minimal pour of so-so white, but the Bristol Brewing draft beer was a good call.
FINAL NOTE: If you are not a member of the country club, there is an automatic 20 percent service charge. I usually tip in the 20%+ range anyway, but in this case I might have wanted to tip 15 percent, because of the mediocre service and lousy atmosphere, and slip five dollars to the chef. Not an option!
