Deer Valley Ranch
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 September 2010

I have been going to Deer Valley Ranch since I was a child and now enjoy it with my children and family. It is a beautiful, peaceful place, in the Chalk Creek Valley, right below the Chalk Cliffs. There is square dancing, riding, natural spring pools, hot tubs, a "Wild West" play town, children's program, teen program, wrangler's breakfasts, skit night, hikes, rafting on the Arkansas River, day trips, absolutely fantastic food, great housekeeping, and the best staff in the world!! The wranglers are always a hit but the dining room, housekeeping, office, kitchen, and maintenance staff are all superb!
Deer Valley Ranch is just as great "off season," with lower prices. Although you don't get alot of the bells and whistles, the facilities are excellent and it lends for a more peaceful, relaxing time.
The area has alot to offer: fishing, off-roading, ATVing, lots of hiking, a nearby fish hatchery, shopping in Salida (antique stores, boutiques, etc.) and Buena Vista, gorgeous scenery, biking, etc. It is a perfect, insect-free, outdoor adventure place!
What I really appreciate is the wholesome, Christian atmosphere. Deer Valley has a church service on Sundays (during the summer), doesn't allow alcohol, and is a great place to commune with God. They don't prostelitize. It is truly a gem. Go! Whether you are a group (my parents had their 50th anniversary get-together at DVR), family, extended family, couple, or single, it is a fun, peaceful getaway. I highly recommend it. Oh, didn't mention winter options of cross- sountry skiing, downhill skiing and snowbaording at nearby Monarch. Also, a visit to nearby St. Elmo, an old mining "ghost" town where you can feed chipmunks from your hand (and wash them well afterward!) You will love DVR - whether it's full of activities and you put your sore, cowboy/girl body to bed by 9 p.m. or do your own thing. It is a good value. If you go in the summer, almost everything is included (minus a special horseback ride or special amenity). Off-season, doing your own meals is a great deal. I recommend DVR with the highest commendations!

We had a fabulous time at Deer Valley and can't wait to go back next year. The activities that they provided were well-planned. Our two boys (12 & 13) had a great time in the teen program. The staff were all very friendly and seemed to love the opportunity to work there. It was fun getting to know other families at mealtimes -- 8 to a table and they mix families around all week. The rooms (we were in the lodge) were rustic, but very clean and well-kept. A great vacation for the whole family.

Deer Valley Ranch in Nathrop, Co is a fantastic place for a family vacation. This is a family owned ranch in the south central part of Colorado about 100 miles due west of Colorado Springs in the San Isabel National Forest. This is a guest ranch that has been in business over 50 years and is still owned by the original family. They really seem to have achieved the perfect balance between planned activities and events and free time for families here. There are a lot of reasons that I would choose to give this guest ranch such high marks. First, I will tell you about the accomodations - they have about 12 cabins that range in size from accodating 6-8 to cabins that will hold 12. These cabins are all very nice but not fancy. They do not have TV. They have no phones in the cabins either and the cellular reception is poor. They do have free internet and phones you can use at the office. Their main lodge is really beautiful. It's kind of rustic architecture is very comfortable and this is where you will meet for most meals. The 3 squares they give you each day is remarkable. Everyone could not believe the quality and quantity of the meals they served and the manner in which they served them - OUTSTANDING !!. DVR is a Christian quest ranch and on Sunday they have a morning worship service and in the evening they have a praise service. Both of which were spiritually uplifting. They have over 100 horses and mules t hat are available for riding. Each day they give you many oppor tunities to ride. The horses and mules are all top notch and they offer riding for the beginner to the more advanced. From 1 hour rides to all day high adventure rides. The service here is what really sets them apart. I really don't know how they do it but they have over 50 college kids that are all exceptional ! I really can not say enough about them and the roles each of them plays in making the experience here "First Class". Each afternoon they give you an iteneray of the following days activities you can take part in (or not) They are very careful to give you a lot of choices. The location is set on Chalk Creek (the creek is actually across the s treet) From the location here you can venture up the road (which follows the creek) and find many interesting and close by things to do such as Agnes Falls (very much worth the 40 min hike up), St. Elmo - an old ghost mining town. Cottonwood pass - right on the cont. divide at over 12,200 feet still offered us snow to sled down at the end of July. Here is where we also found the most beautiful wild flowers ever!!. We also were treated to White water rafting on the gorgeous Arkansas river (part of the package deal) with an outfitter called Noah's Ark - I can't say enough good things about them as well. We took part in basketball, softball, panning for gold, horseshoes, hiking, horseback riding, shuffleboard, swimming, rafting, squaredancing, singing, taking part in skits, sliding in the snow, bird-watching, fellow-shipping, you-name-it. I really don't have enough time or room here to begin to tell the half of it. Excellent place. Email me any questions - weshackney@mail.com
