“Check in process was the only hiccup”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2014

Our recent stay at the hot springs was a great overall experience but got started somewhat rocky.

The reception area was extremely crowded with people checking in, the bar and restaurant traffic and regular business. This wouldn't have been such an issue if we hadn't of had to wait in the check in line multiple times due to the room not being ready, despite it being after our check in time.

After we were checked in and settled our stay was wonderful! The room was clean and in great condition with very comfortable furnishings. We had a lovely dinner at the restaurant, great massages and relaxed in the pools.

If the resort could just clear up the check in process and make it more efficient there would be nothing to complain about!

I recently stayed at Mt. Princeton Hot Springs with my new wife for a few nights on our honeymoon. We've both been to many of the hot springs in Colorado and were sad to learn that, as Colorado natives, we had missed this quaint little hideaway near Buena Vista.

The scenery is by far some of the most beautiful in Colorado. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Princeton (the one of the dominating 14ers in the Arkansas valley) with perfect views of the Chalk Cliffs and Chalk Creek running through the resort, it's a perfect setting for a little relaxation.

They offer several kinds of rooms from the historic lodge to private cabins to motel like rooms. We stayed in the "Hillside" rooms. They were arranged like a standard motel and had great views of the surrounding mountains. The room was a mix of old and new. Old, sturdy 6-panel doors and nice new Keurig coffee makers. The room we stayed in wasn't posh or well-appointed, but functional, comfortable and quiet.

After many conversations with return guests, we learned that the resort has seen a major overhaul in recent years. Part of that overhaul includes the addition of a spa area on the south side of Chalk creek that is only for those 16 years and older and limited to guests staying on the resort. The day-trippers don't have access to the spa area and consequently, it's beautifully quiet and uncrowded. We were there on a Thursday-Saturday and never felt crowded on the spa side of the resort. Many times we had either the relaxation pool or one of the hot spring pools all to ourselves.

The pools were all warm and each is fed by the natural hot springs. The resort cools and treats the water in the larger pools with small amounts of chlorine, but it's almost imperceptible. The pools are probably about 98-100 degrees F so it's like a warm bath kind of temperature. If you want warmer, the spa side of the resort offers a couple of "hot tub-sized" pools that are hotter and contain no chlorine. These small pools go up to 110 degrees F.

We enjoyed our time and would definitely return in the future, either as a couple or with our kids. It doesn't feel nearly as large and commercialized as Glenwood Springs, but maintains a quiet, small mountain town feel. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Colorado mountains that's just a stone's throw away from tons of outdoor activities.

Room Tip: "Cliffside" rooms have the best views and are typically only about $10 more per night than...

We just returned from Mt. Princeton Resort, and we had a wonderful, relaxing time.

I've read the reviews that say that their hotel room wasn't worth the money paid, and I want to defend the resort on that point. This is no different from going to a destination that is very unusual, so therefore you pay more money than you would any old place.

It's not just the room, it's the whole experience with the natural hot springs, and the other amenities offered by the resort. Few places in the world have natural hot springs, especially ones that are routed into clean, lovely pools. Be sure to arrive EARLY on the day that you are to check in, so you can get a wristband and use the resort on that day, and then all the next day. Two days for one night stay.

The resort stay guests have their own natural hot spring pool, with several natural "jacuzzi" pools (hot, hotter, hottest), smoothies and fruit juice with or without alcohol (priced extra, but again, no more than you'd pay at any resort), a sauna, steam room, and, if you want it, spa services such as massages and facials.

We stayed in one of the hillside rooms, which had great beds with wonderful linen. It was quiet. It cost about $175/night, which if you were just looking at the room, was overpriced. But if you go to the public pools (located at the resort) and paid for two days, it brings the price down to a very reasonable and justified amount. Again, it's the whole experience.

The only thing we didn't get to do, because the river that runs through the resort is running so high, is sit in the river in the pockets of hot water. Now that's a unique experience (we've done it before). Maybe next year, or later this year when the water isn't flowing so hard.

Two other things: The staff is tremendous. Very gracious, very accommodating - great service. Second, these are not sulphur hot springs. There is NO smell, and I have a sensitive nose. In fact, the lack of chlorine is kind of awesome!

While maybe not bucket list level, Mt. Princeton Resort and Hot Springs is something pretty unique that we will talk about with others and go back!

Room Tip: Try for the cliff rooms, although they are a little more expensive. Don't stay in the lodge.

They have made so many wonderful improvements over the years!

Please understand, this is a hot springs and bathhouse. The odors in the locker rooms are to be expected, not awful, but unique. Exactly like we would think a bathhouse locker room should smell.

Be prepared for a variety of conditions. There has been much new added to the original old bath house. The accommodations also vary greatly! DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!

Expect the cabins to be an up/down duplex style.

The cliff and hillside side rooms are laid out in a row like a motel, but they are pretty nice inside. The Cliffside are nicest of the 2 and the rooms are pretty big.

I have never stayed in the Lodge, so not sure about that.

The finished pools are a fun mix and variety of temps and activities.

The springs in the river are just that, springs in a RIVER! If you cannot negotiate walking on boulders, steep dirt path or fast flowing water to get to the riverside springs, then do not do it, but also do not blame the resort. They *allow* those who can make it down to them to enjoy them. If you cannot make it down to them, then simply enjoy the finished pools.

Enough people have said the restaurant is expensive and not that great. So if you eat there and expect different, then that is on you. We have eaten there once, was not for us so we will never again. Besides, we do not drive 2 hours to eat at the restaurant, we go to enjoy the wonderful hot spring water. Just pack a cooler of food, maybe bring a disposable BBQ'r like we did and eat your own food. There are also a lot of nice places to eat in Buena Vista, which is not that far away. Ask how to get there via the back, more scenic way.

Now for a bit of advice. People, this is a historic lodge and bathhouse, it is your fault if you are expecting Marriott conditions, they are not and do not claim to be, but each and every time we have stayed, our room has been clean, our bed comfortable, the pools amazing and the views spectacular.

We LOVE Mount Princeton Hot Springs!

Tip 1) We bring our bikes. Kids will ride them down to pools, then we use our vehicle to load them back up and get them back up the hill at the end of the day. Bring a bike lock.

Tip 2) We spend at least one day fishing further up Chalk Creek and always catch fish.

Room Tip: We like Cliffside :)

Like staying in the cabins butt seems like the up keep cabins are not being maintained. The floors are dirty and no cooking utensils and trash left under the beds from the previous visitors. For the amount being charged for cabins the cabins need too be lot cleaner.

Loved our two days here so much that we are already planning a longer stay next year. We stayed in one of the spacious, well equipped, cliff side rooms, which had good views of the resort.
We spent so much time in the hot pools relaxing and it was just what we needed after so much travel.
The shop is very well stocked and we had breakfast on our patio each morning.
Would have loved to stay longer but we had already booked our next hotel in Colorado.
I would definitely have given five stars if security had been better.
My only gripe is that we noticed lots of people sneaking in through a side gate unchallenged, bringing in their own towels and moving away quickly if confronted - guests are given gold wrist bands to wear during their stay which allows access to the hot springs and pool. When I mentioned this to the girls in the Spa reception they were not interested so I told the reception staff when checking out but got much the same response. Other guests had noticed this problem and not only is it annoying to paying guests, but who will be responsible when things left on loungers go missing.
Come on management get the security sorted or no one will bother to stay and pay.

Room Tip: Rooms at the top of the resort are quieter with better views and if you don't want to walk back...

My husband and I visit family in Salida every year. We had some free time on Friday and decided to go for the day to enjoy the hot spring pools. The place is gorgeous! The two main hot spring pools were very nice, lots of chairs/lounges. Only disappointment was that the creek side springs were not available due to the river being high because of the snow melt. Had lunch in the restaurant, bar tender was extremely personable and food was good, albeit a little expensive. Hope to get back next year!
