Amazing fun to feed the chipmunks... The St. Elmo ghost town was very interesting, and the store is the best!

“Ghost town”
Reviewed 20 August 2013

Feed the chipmunks, best in the morning.
Plenty of jeep and ATV trails.
Loads of history.
Small store and orginal buildings.
They rent jeeps in Buena Vista and ATVs are cheaper at the St. Elmo store.

“Very simple, but cool to see”
Reviewed 15 August 2013

We were warned not to expect too much from St. Elmo, so were not disappointed at the lack of formal activities. Don't expect much of a history lesson, but do expect a nice drive followed by an interesting set of buildings to walk around. It kind of felt like a movie set to us. Kids may love the opportunity to feed the many chipmunks (you can buy chipmunk food at the general store).

“Does a ghost town have to be boring?”
Reviewed 7 August 2013 via mobile

It should be interesting to visit a town that was booming one decade as a mining town and suddenly went dead. What was it like in its heyday? What is mining like and how did they do it? What tools did they use? Why did the community die?None of this is presented to the visitor. There is a dingy General Store with a collection of antique toys and chipmunk food for sale but nothing in the way of souvenirs - unless you count buying a "I fed the chipmunks" T-shirt.

“Best Ghost Town In Co”
Reviewed 3 August 2013

During a rainy day in Frisco, my wife and I decided to drive 1.5 hours to visit St. Elmo. I visited this ghost town in 1971 while at Young Life's Silver Cliff Ranch. I remembered many of the buildings. While you can only go inside a couple of buildings it is worth seeing the others and peaking in the window. Like any ghost town, keep on the lookout for a ghost that peeks out the window from the second story of an old building. The General Store is owned by a family that now has three generations working there. They know a lot about the town and are happy to talk with you. For all ages there are chipmonks that will eat sunflower seeds out of your right hand while sitting in your left hand. Make sure to walk up the hill and see the couple of old railroad cars that have been covered by a new roof to protect them. Also the drive from Buena Vista to St. Elmo is beautiful and makes the drive even more enjoyable. Don't miss St. Elmo if you are within a two hour drive.
