Owner description: Stagecoach State Park sets the stage for great recreation in the lush Yampa Valley by Steamboat Springs. Vistas and views are backdrops to the 820-acre reservoir providing renown lake and river fishing. A year-round destination, the park also makes a great base to explore the variety of sports and attractions of the area. An array of activities await with boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking and camping. Winter offers trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat-tire biking for those seeking a less commercial experience. In summer, water sports enthusiasts enjoy the many ways to recreate at the reservoir. Off-season and weekday visits are wonderfully serene, providing great opportunities to take pleasure in the land, water and nature without the crowds. Cabin fever in the winter can be relieved by camping in one of the five electrical sites maintained just for winter camping. Stagecoach State Park is a great place to hold base camp when exploring the many outdoor opportunities around the park such as the Flattops Wilderness Area and Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area.

There are a couple of issues with camping here if you are in an RV. Two campgrounds have electric hookups: Junction City & Pinnacle. We ended up in Pinnacle because the campground itself and the sites were larger and more level. We were there when it rained and the fact that there is no pavement in the park made things a bit of a mess. Still it's beautiful and peaceful and only about 17 miles from Steamboat. I couldn't
get any phone service and I'm guessing TV is via satellite only. When we first arrived we checked in at the park office and then drove through Junction City CG pulling s 32 foot travel trailer. It was very tight maneuvering and we were relieved that Pinnacle was laid out entirely differently - much more open and roomy. Junction City is perfect for smaller units.

Great state park for trout and pike fishing. Boat ramp is easily accessible and close to the parking lot for your trailer and vehicle. Lots of camping spaces.

Busy during the summer, but so many great places to hike around. Sarvis Creek is one of our favorite places to hike! Beautiful scenery. We also like to take the dogs for swimming in the summer and running on the frozen reservoir during the winter.

I have used Stagecoach year round for skiing, picnic area, fishing, walking and canoeing. PROS - X-country skiing path on Elk Run Trail follows the south shore -it is wide, groomed and rarely used, vault bathrooms are open year round, fishing - after ice breaks and Fall - is good from shore, canoeing in the no wake zones is only fair (there is not much to explore), picnic area (day use) is lakeside & pleasant but over-priced if u don't already have a park pass, beach volleyball is a nice touch in the summer, the walk to the dam from Morrison Cove is little used & has early Spring access. CONS - This lake is surrounded by sagebrush (not an alpine lake), not a hiking park, trails have no shade, very hot in summer, lake is really small for non-motorized boats & motor boats to share (lots of wakes for non-motorized and just a big circle for water skiing), canoeing outside of no-wake zones is not pleasant, campsites (RV & tent) are cramped. the marina store stocks almost nothing, water stays cold (not great for swimming). It wouldn't take much to improve the appeal of the main marina store & deck area: add deck chairs for lake viewing (currently only a few picnic tables), add hummingbird feeders, add flowers, stock the marina store (currently its a joke) and promote recycling (there is none in this heavily used area - you must search out recycling next to parking lot dumpsters) and PLEASE ADD SOAP dispensers to the bathrooms (no soap at all!).

There isn't a lot to do at stagecoach unless you like boating or fishing. The sites are nice but a bit close together for a state campground. There is no real 'hiking' but more 'walking' or biking trails alongside the lake which are pretty. It is about a 20 minute drive to steamboat, however, there are nice drives/hikes to do in the area such as the bear lake reservoir drive in nearby Yampa which has hiking opportunities or the Flat Tops Scenic drive.
