“Great campground in an awesome town!”
Reviewed 20 July 2014 via mobile

I have a small camper, a tent that sleeps 5 and a suburban and our spot across from the cabin had plenty of room and we could hear the river! We loved it! The staff was very helpful, friendly and accommodating. This campground attracts such wonderful people. The bathrooms are totally spotless. The showers have plenty of room. They have a chair and hooks for every shower stall. The laundry room is clean and the tv room is clean, up to date and nice to be in. For tent campers you should definitely bring a mattress to sleep on as all the sites are gravel. I broke my mallet pounding a stake in. The campground is so convenient to downtown and tons of hiking trails. Be sure to stop by the visitors center to get detailed maps of the hikes in the area. I love this town for the unlimited hiking trails. It's great. Day trip to Telluride, it is so beautiful! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it doesn't have grass and playground doesn't offer much for kids, just swings and a basketball court. Great campground in an awesome town! Love it!

Seriously, I don't know how anyone can rate this place higher, unless you're comparing it to dry camping in the desert. Awnings literally inches from the neighboring campers; the whole place is just campers parked on grass with utility posts next to them and sewer. Just an empty lot with campers. Maybe you're desperate for a place to park, otherwise avoid!

I stumbled across this place while looking for a spot to park my van at dusk. No one was in the office and a sign encouraged campers to just choose a spot. The code for the bathroom door and the wifi log-in were nowhere to be found. I finally collared a passing camper for that information.
Downtown Ouray is just a few minutes walk from the campground. During my overnight stay the loudest sound was the nearby river. The surrounding mountain peaks in the moonlight were stunning. The bathroom was very clean and the wifi worked well some of the time. The sullen teenaged girl who checked me out may not be indicative of the general level of customer service.

We were very happy with the location- just in town. It is a short walk to the hot springs pool and to town. We very just enjoyed walking into town for dinner and to get to shops. We did not love that there is no grass- it is gravel and the slots are very close together. Because we travel with our 3 children and dogs, they gave us a space on the end so the kids had some space to play. There is an old playground. The restrooms are very clean. All in all, we'd return here because of the great location but we were disappointed in the sites.

Great location on river. We were able to squeeze into river side site with our 30ft RV. Sites are very close together. Clean bathrooms and laundry. Good power and water. No discounts for AAA nor Good Sam. Good place to stay when visiting Ouray when you want hookups. Otherwise camp at Amphitheater Natl Forest campground 1500 ft above valley floor - magnificent!

Having stayed here several times over the past years, we always default to picking this campground in Ouray. While the location is excellent and facilities are super clean, the sites are so close together that you have to really want to camp there to enjoy another RV 2 feet from yours. Of all the campgrounds we have ever stayed at, these sites are by far the closest, and we've shoehorned our way into a few. The sites along the river are best, because the sound helps to muffle the noise in the next camper and / or campground. The sites are gravel with hookup, and while the campground boasts a laundry room, I would suggest getting your stuff out of the laundry room well before it "closes" (according to the sign) -- cause it closes early. (Seriously - don't take the times on the sign for granted). The laundry room is clean and well maintained. We're self-sufficient campers, but we do value customer service and feeling as though the campground hosts truly want campers there -- not a feeling that we get at the 4J anymore. Perhaps times have changed for them, and they are no longer really happy with their work or interacting with campers -- it can happen to all of us. Either way, after two years of less than satisfied experiences, we're looking forward to trying another campground next year.

Maybe this should be an Average +.....Nice location by a beautiful river/stream, and walkable to everything in the town. Showers/bathrooms were nice.

However, the tent lots are gravel and not really for tents. and spaced one in line with the next (like it was a divided up gravel lot) so no real trees or other type of coverage for privacy. Our space also had a phone/electric tower line about 1/3 the way through it. We had a small tent and it was fine for 1 night.

It looked nice for the RVs that were parked across the dirt road, backing to the beautiful river, so if you have an RV this could be a good place... just wouldn't recommend for tents unless you just needed 1 night, had a mat to put under your sleeping bag (we did), etc.

The showers/bathrooms were nice and well kept: they have the shower and then a changing space w/a chair, then the curtain; however, the lady cleaning pulled open my shower curtain just as I had grabbed my towel coming out of the shower... wasn't too happy with that (if the curtain is pulled close, wouldn't you first ask if someone is there? or look below to see if there were flip flops /shower shoes or feet?).

Room Tip: Go if you are an RV and ask for a spot by the river. If you do go tenting, be sure to have mattress...
