“Lots of Issues But Still Nice”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

We arrived and found a beautiful motel for our July 4th weekend. Unfortunately, I thought we had booked a ground floor room, but the proprietors had no record of that. Also unfortunately, the metal steps, which you could see through and were not especially friendly for dog feet, were a problem. My dogs would not go up and down them. We were given a blanket and told that we could lay that down each of the three flights of steps in order to coax the dogs up and down. Not convenient. But the owners were very accommodating and worked with some other people in a ground floor room who agreed to switch with us. It was a very nice gesture and much appreciated.

The motel is wonderfully located in town. The grounds are beautiful. There is a dog park behind the motel, which we didn't use but looked pretty decent. We like to go out for breakfast, so I cannot speak to the meal that is included in the price. I can say that despite how sweet the grounds are and the location is, I think the place is quite a bit overpriced.

The HUGE problem was not the fireworks, which seemed especially loud as they reverberated off of all of the beautiful rock cliffs surrounding the town, and it was not even the VERY loud firecrackers that people in the neighborhood (we assume it was coming from the RV park across the river) were shooting off, though neither of those things made for happy puppies. The big problem is the people running the establishment next door. New owners of the Coachlight Restaurant and Tavern seem to have no decency whatsoever. They had a band playing and the decibel level was absolutely over-the-top, arena-level loud, outlandishly loud, and played far into the night. It is beyond me how any town would put up with such a thing. The noise, both the terrible quality of it and the loudness of it, was a frustrating disappointment to an already disappointing first day (we had not yet been moved downstairs at this point).

In summary, I think River's Edge Motel is a nice place. But I would recommend calling ahead to make sure the noise from next door has been addressed before assuming that you will be able to truly enjoy your stay (I doubt that they only have bands playing on holidays). Confirm a ground-level room if your dogs aren't used to open, see-through, metal, grated steps. Be ready to spend some money. I was expecting much more than my money got me. The owners were lovely people and were as accommodating as they could be. I would like to give a rating of 3 1/2, but we can't do that here, and I just didn't have a good enough experience to bring myself to click on that 4 rating.

Room Tip: If you have dogs, try to get a ground-level room.

We stayed in Rm. 31 in June 2014. It was one of the larger rooms with direct street access. Wonderful room and location; close to town; great parking for our motorcycle. Grounds are beautiful with the river next to lodge. Breakfast area is rather small and can be crowded but that was minor inconvenience considering all other positives. Have never done a review on Trip Advisor but River's Edge made me want to post a review.

Room Tip: Hotel has a variety of room sizes. Street access rooms are larger.

We haven't stayed in other Ouray lodging and picked River's Edge from the reviews. This place is quite a bargain, and the excellent reviews are warranted. I believe the owners stay on the property, and the grounds reflect their attention. The property sits next to the small, pretty river, and there are plenty of benches on the good looking lawn.

In a small touristy town like Ouray, parking can be a minor aggravation (nothing like the major pain that it is in Telluride or Santa Fe), and the River's Edge is located about a block from the main drag for all the shopping and dining. If you're a bit of a hiker, the Town's perimeter trail can be picked up across the river from the motel with a return right back to the property. If you are a day hiker, the perimeter trail is first rate.

The River's Edge Motel in Ouray, Colorado is on a very pleasant location at the center of Ouray, two blocks West of the main road through town (highway 55). The hotel and grounds are pristeen clean and well cared for by the current purveyors, who have run the location for six years. I travel extensively for work and can confidently say that this Motel is an excellent value, especially for the price; check the other hotels and motels in the area and you will find much higher prices for significantly less quality and amenities... or maybe I should keep this reasonably priced gem to myself....

We decided to check into River's Edge Motel on a whim. Thank goodness we did. This was the best experience we've ever had with a motel. We lucked out and were given the last room available. What a fantastic room. It was the room located directly behind the office. The owner explained that it doubles as their residence during certain times of year. It was gorgeous. Roomy and comfortable. The grounds were lovely and welcoming. Lots of places to wander or sit and enjoy the view. The next morning before check out, we enjoyed a lovely breakfast provided by the owners. (And yummy fresh baked cookies!). The owners were so incredibly kind. We felt like they actually cared about us and our comfort. We HIGHLY recommend River's Edge.

Rivers Edge had one of the most scenic views in Ouray. The grounds are lushly landscaped right down to the rushing river which is so peaceful to listen to. We hope to keep coming back. Although the plumbing and electrical are antiquated, WiFi is available everywhere. It can be irritating trying to get the toilet to flush and I take a flashlight to help the dim lighting. But it is clean with gracious in-residence owners available all the time. Breakfast is delightful with incredible hot cookies to sum it up!
