“Not what I expected”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

We bought an extra week through RCI to finish up a month long vacation. I called about the room before I booked it. Wanted a regular one bedroom and we were given a nice one bedroom "deluxe" unit. Was told these were the nicer units. The unit is good size with a lake view but has problems. Carpet has a rip in living room and is just dirty looking, washer has problems. The big whirlpool tub is nice, won't use it because the jets are dirty. The shower really needs a good cleaning, grout, corners of shower are terrible. The area is nice with lots to do but don't think I would stay here unless I could see the unit first. Oh, internet service is terrible.

This is a place that truly survives on location alone. I've taken family skiing the last two-years and it is a great location and concept, but they clearly spend little money keeping it up.
The sink faucets have so much sediment in them that the water sprays everywhere. The furnishings are very aged and show obvious wear.
They do keep the parking areas and sidewalks pretty clear. They have updated TVs to flat screens.
The cooking stuff is so old you almost want to go buy stuff and leave it.
We go back because it is close to Wolf Creek Ski Area and we LOVE Wolf Creek. Otherwise, we'd not choose to stay there.

First of all, when you walk into the lobby of the check-in building, the carpet looks like someone died on it. Hint: Management - don't you want to make a good first impression? The place is filthy, for God's sake. We stayed in what I would guess is one of the older buildings. Not only was it old and outdated, but dirty - I really don't think the toilet was even cleaned before we got there. The carpet was old and very stained. Hint: Management: You really need to shampoo the carpets once in awhile - duh!! Our location was wonderful - I have to say - right on the golf course; however, I felt there was little to do around the area unless you spent the bucks. The pool is an indoor pool and didn't look all that appealing - I have to say the workout room was pretty nice. I would be very hard pressed to stay here again unless I was sure we were put up in one of the newer units.

My husband and I are Wyndham owners but this is our first stay in Pagosa. We loved Pagosap. The units are a little dated but still very nice and clean. Reminded me more of a ski lodge than a Wyndham property. We stayed in a one bedroom one bath unit. We had ample closet space and a large bathroom. We were given a handicap unit so there was no tub but it didn't bother us since we both shower. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed from pots and pans to a microwave and blender. The stove / range was not a flat top but it worked just fine. The hot tub was in the back of our unit. We used it every night we didn't go to the springs. The pool was in the activity center a few blocks down so we didn't use it. We were told Wyndham Pagosa is one of the next properties to be updated. However, even though it was outdated we will be back. We enjoyed our stay.

Pagosa springs is beautiful. The resort is conveniently located near town. We hiked, fished, ate well but as for the rooms......nothing special. We stayed in the Teak lodge area which supposedly was just redone. Don't understand it. The place just did not look clean. The carpet was stained, the tiles in the bathroom were missing grout in spots, glass sliding doors were filthy. The only thing nice about the room was the view of the lake. Some Outlets and phones were not working in the rooms. Don't bother calling the front desk or activity center for information....they never pick up the phones. Staff at the activity center were not very helpful or friendly. The recreation center had a gym, however bring your own towel because they literally give you a wash cloth to work out with. Upon arrival, met a woman named Ashley who was very helpful in recommending restaurants and activities during our stay. Throughout my stay she was very persistent in trying to get me to a "Wyndham owners update meeting". I wish the other Wyndham staff were as concerned and persistent about the upkeep and cleanliness of the resort, as they are about having Wyndham owners spend more money to upgrade their timeshares!

As long as guests understand that this is a 3-star property they will not be disappointed. As you will see below the list of cons is longer than the list of pros; however, most of these are quite picky. There is plenty to see and do in the area, and resort offers many free on-site activities for adults and children.

We stayed a full week and were sad to leave despite some of the concerns listed below.

Pros:

Location - mid-way between Cumbres & Toltec and Durango & Silverton railroad excursions, and close to the hot springs, all of which we enjoyed very much.

Lovely well-maintained grounds, quiet and peaceful. Beautiful sunsets. On property golf course and small lake for fishing.

We very much appreciated our large 1-bedroom unit in the Ptarmigan area (unity 7210A). The unit was fully equipped and comfortable (ok, we would have liked a kettle and teapot), despite a few minor maintenance issues. We very much appreciated the inclusion of dishwasher and laundry soaps. Extra towels were also provided. (This is a timeshare – bring your own personal soap, shampoo, etc.)

Convenient to a large grocery store, liquor store and other shops and services – all reasonably priced compared to home.

The included WiFi was appreciated, although occasionally it did cut out briefly.

Activities centre helpful with day excursions.

Cons:

Aside from newish carpeting and tiles, the rest of the unit was dated (early 80s), with pink kitchen counter tops. The living room TV was small, especially given the distance from seating, and the bedroom TV was ancient.

Shower tap was difficult to use and needed replacement. My husband bought a cheap screwdriver to tighten it up, but couldn’t do the full repair needed.

There was an electrical issue with the ceiling fan/lamp where one of the lights flashed every 15 seconds all night. A bit scary – but we got used to it.

The washer/dryer worked well, but both were very old and the dryer was very loud and whiny. We would plan to dry a load during our evening walks.

We called for maintenance and someone did come through to inspect when we were out, but no repairs were made during our stay.

The Jacuzzi room looked old and sterile and personally I think should be removed and replaced with a small 2nd bedroom. We didn't use it.

Also, the bedroom had a door access to the back deck, but meant we were uncomfortable leaving it open during the night. This door should be replaced with a window. Access to the deck from the living room is quite sufficient.

After three days, the condo sales folks finally got the message that we had no intention of attending one of their "workshops". If we hadn't been through this numerous times before we would have felt very pressured and probably would have caved. Don't go unless you have already decided you want to buy.

We didn't check out the recreation centre and indoor pool or participate in any of the activities other than the welcome meeting, which was very informative with loads of prizes.

The Wyndham Pagosa does not pretend to be a luxury property. It provides spacious and comfortable accommodations that felt more like a "home away from home" than a hotel. We would definitely try to stay at this property if we return to the Pagosa Springs area.

As far as a Wyndham property goes, this one isn't the best. Our room was smaller than we have ever had at a Wyndham property - the kitchen was tiny! We didn't have a balcony or patio. No outdoor relaxation space. That was incredibly disappointing.
If you compare this to typical hotel room - it is great. You get a kitchen and living room with eating space. It was very clean and nice. Overall it was a nice stay - just not up to Wyndham standards.
