“Burn Hut was really cool”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

.On February 2nd, 7 us skied up to the Burn Hut. One fellow had a technical issue with his skis & turned back early. The rest of us had a moderate, yet enjoyable, challenge of skiing the 6 or so miles, up a well defined route (most of the way), while carrying our packs of necessary & indulgent items. The hut was clean & efficient, sort of rustic Bauhaus in its design. I attributed our group's completely positive dynamic to the structural integrity of the cabin as well as its placement within the aspen forest environment found in this part of the Uncompahgre Nationall Forest. Our touring ski day trip between nights was spectacular (if you're into cross-country skiing like we are -3 of our group hit the slopes, where they said they made some nice turns, & me & 2 went off touring). Getting reservations set up for our 2 night stay was easy. Getting waivers signed & scanned/faxed back was the trickiest part. Because I'm lazy & forgetful, I had the hardest time mailing the key back after the trip but they were cool about it. :. didn't charge me 10bucks for sending it back 10 days late like a note in the info says they will. Very fun time had by all. And done on a dime - 25bucks a nite per person to be precise. Highly recommended for the above average athletically able, moderately adventurous nature lover. Plus they're dog friendly!

We are happy to hear that you enjoyed 'our backyard' as much as we do! Our huts provide access to terrain that suits all levels of skiing and varying snow activities. Enjoy the backcountry...enjoy your public lands!

“Beautiful Views in a Beautiful Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2012

I booked in for a winter trip at the Last Dollar Hut at the last minute and found the staff very helpful for making sure that everything was arranged properly.

The trail was easy to follow and the hut was as described and as hoped. The views were incredible and it was a great location!

“Dog owners beware of rat poison.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2012

The trip was lovely but when we were cleaning up to leave we looked under the bunks and there was an open box of rat poison. Our dog had been sniffing around under the bunk the night before. If you bring dogs to the huts take a good look around first so that you can prevent them from eating rat poison. Dogs are also affected by eating rodents killed by rat poison. There was no mention of the hut using rat poison in anything we read and no signs posted of its use.

Thank you for the suggestion! In the 25 years of operation with numerous visits to huts by guests with dogs and with our own dogs, between the owner and employees we have up to 8 dogs running the show, we have never had an issue with dogs getting into the rat poison that is used to keep the pests away and therefore haven't had the need to address this in our literature. But there is always that first time. We love dogs and wouldn't want anything to happen to our four legged friends. We have since added a warning in the documents that we provide our guests indicating that boxed rat poison is under the bunks in our huts. We were happy to hear that the dog that did ingest the poison is doing OK!

“Great trip, great price, simple huts provide all your needs.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2011

Our group of 8 did the Durango to Moab route in late Sept. 2011 and had a totally great trip. We had absolutely flawless, blue sky weather the whole week. The route has great variety of landscape and habitats: tarantulas on the trail and coyotes yipping in the dry country and bugling elk in the aspens outside the hut the last night. (Being from Canada we had hard time imagining doing the trip in the heat of July! Sept. was plenty hot for us.)

The week before we went was very rainy and that may have meant a mud-fest ****-show but it worked out fine for us. The only problem was that we couldn't do the first day single track option from Little Molas due to mud (local advice in Durango was consistent in steering us off that til things dried up more). All the other single track options were fun. On the final day we hike-a-biked up to Burro Pass and had a fabulous time descending to Moab by linking the "Whole Enchilada" set of trails - HIGHLY recommended!!

I think our group (7 of 8 are from Whistler BC) would agree that the days averaged only maybe moderate/moderately hard (usually with a good grunt somewhere) with a couple of longer, harder, higher days (eg. I think we were all very glad to see the hut on Day 2). Having said that, we had one of our group (perhaps coincidentally the guy who lived at sea level) struggle with the altitude at the start and he had to cut out for a night in town and rejoined us part way feeling better.)

The trip really is good value and especially so with the book-3-and-#4-comes-free bargain they offer. The huts are simple and spartan but totally adequate for what it is: a place to fuel up, sleep, and stay warm at night. It may not be for 5 star types, whiners and picky prima donnas, but for reasonable, outdoorsy folks it is pretty much all you need (and hey, what do you expect for that low price anyways!!) Were things perfect? No, there were a few missing kitchen bits etc but these are very minor issues. (I have written them that they need a proper handwash set up - that was my main beef.)

We all carried lightweight sleep sheets/sl. bag liners (eg like the silk ones at mec.ca) and were glad we did - especially as they provide a pocket to stuff your clothes into for a pillow.

Great trip, great hut locations, great country - do it!

“Fantastic Ride - Great Terrain, Huts and Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2011

We just returned from the 5 day/4 night San Juan Hut System trip from Durango to Paradox. Loved every minute of the trip. The huts were great and were equip with everything we needed. The route directions were clear and we only made one wrong turn in 5 days of riding new terrain. Highlight of the trip was riding 20 miles of single track from Little Molas Lake. Only regret was not doing the 7 day/6 night trip and enjoying two more days of riding on the way to Moab. Thanks SJHS for a great adventure.
