Description: Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

“You have to eat here!”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

You can't visit Ridgway and not eat at True Grit. After all, the real True Grit movie was filmed here. You would miss a tasty meal, friendly service and the movie memorabilia honoring John Wayne and photos, etc. of Ridgway's own Dennis Weaver. Really good burgers!

“Lunch stop”
Reviewed 17 February 2014 via mobile

Stopped here in our way though after reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. Big glasses for drinks, great menu selection and cool ambiance. Order the chicken fried steak. Was yummy and served with fresh warm rolls. Service was exceptional. Tea never got less than half full in our glasses. Interesting John Wayne history did hurt either.

“Awesome food and excellent service!!!”
Reviewed 16 February 2014 via mobile

Our server Tracey was the best. 7 of us and all on separate checks. She has a great sense of humor, was a lot of fun and served in a timely manner. We started with a stack of the best onion rings ever. Burgers, fish and salads were very tasty. And the home made salad dressings are to die for, especially the blue cheese vinaigrette. Thank you for an excellent dining experience. We will be back.

“Best Green Chili Burrito on Western Slope”
Reviewed 31 December 2013 via mobile

Whether you are on the way to/from Telluride, Ouray or to spend time in Ridgway, The True Grit Cafe is worth a stop but be sure and come hungry. Friendly staff who I think reflect well on the owners. A fair selection of beer is available on tap and some tasty sounding hot chocolate drinks were available from the bar when we visited in December. A wide variety of things on the menu from salads, burgers & sandwiches to Mexican classics.

We've not been disappointed with anything we've tried but we keep coming back when we're in town for their green chili. It's the best I've found on the Western Slope. Tender, lean pork and green chilies nicely seasoned for just the right combination of heat and flavor. When served over a shredded chicken burrito with some rice and beans, it is the ultimate in south western comfort food that will keep me coming back again.

We've noted very few shortcomings worth mentioning. I will say that their tortillas are unremarkable enough to probably be package type and could probably benefit from a little toasting.
