Review of Spiral Drive

We made the mistake of heading up here after dinner when there were storms heading in. By the time we got to the top, the winds were really whipping around & rain was coming down. I'd recommend going up before noon.

The views are beautiful and the drive was good. It was comforting having one side mountain and one side open. Recommend this for everyone!

Rough road ending in a good view of the Ark Valley and of Salida. Viewing the Spiral Drive at night from below is an interesteing light show...

A short drive up the hill that has the big "S" on the side just outside of Salida. The road is not paved, but can easily be navigated with even small cars. There are no guard rails, so the timid at heart may not want to look down the edge of the road while driving, but the road is wide enough in most places to easily pass oncoming vehicles and has wide areas to wait for traffic to pass the few narrow spots in the road. The area on top can hold about four or five vehicles if parked efficiently and there is more places to park just a bit below the top.

There is a little look-out structure on top and the views are fantastic 360 degrees. At sunset is is gorgeous. Great spots for pictures. The whole town of Salida is visible, surrounded by the beautiful mountains. There are some steps to the highest point, maybe the equivalent of about four or five stories, but if it is that is too hard for you to climb that, the views are also great great from the parking area on top.

You can also hike and bike up to the top and there are many combination hiking, mountain biking and horse back trails on the hill and the surrounding hills.

When we were in the area you could walk, cycle or drive to the top. The views are definitely worth the trip but beware the road is quite steep and narrow in a car so not for nervous drivers (or passengers). The road is not tarmac, but it is OK for a normal car. Beware dust on a dry day if you drive with the windows open!
