Owner description: The Wood's High Mountain Distillery concept was born on raft trip in the Grand Canyon over 20 years ago. While owner and distiller P.T. Wood was sipping on premium whiskey in one of the most inspiring places on earth, he decided to pursue the dream of handcrafting his own spirits in downtown Salida. The dream soon became reality and P.T. and his brother, Lee Wood partnered together and purchased a building on First street that formerly housed the Downtown Auto Body shop. After some major renovations and improvements to the building they found a 35 gallon copper pot still that would make premium spirits and fit the personality that makes Wood's unique. The pot still was produced in Heidelberg, Germany around 1880 and was purchased by the Wood's brothers from a family of German descent that brought it over with them when they came to the United States. The pot still was installed at the distillery and was fitted with a copper column with a dephlegmator, gin basket and cold water condenser made by Vendome Copper and Brass works specifically for Wood's. A larger stripping still was built by P.T. with key help from some local contractors to allow the distillation of larger volumes of mash than the smaller pot still. Currently, the distillery produces malt whiskeys, a rye whiskey, gin, elderflower liqueur with other ongoing projects including distilling and aging a stout brewed by Elevation Brewing. Tours are available Monday through Friday, noon to 5 PM. The tasting room for the distillery was opened in February 2013 on a limited basis. It has grown in popularity due to the colorful staff, exclusive craft cocktails and the highly palatable spirits that are being served there, The tasting room is now open seven days a week and features snacks that are prepared by Sweeties Bakery and Scanga Meat Co. The spirits and the saloon atmosphere in the tasting room at Wood's pays homage to the outdoor adventure experience in the Colorado high country and to the hardworking railroad and mining history of Salida. Wood's High Mountain Distillery is proud to be now be an fully operational artisan, craft distillery in the Creative District of Salida.

Not only did we love the creativity of Wood's cocktails (who knew that a cocktail with Sriracha and whiskey could be so good?!), and the quality of their whiskey, we also loved the ambiance of the place. Exposed brick, garage door opening up to the sidewalk, plenty of comfortable seating, and an open view of the distillery in the back. We even got an impromptu tour of the space, followed by a tasting of a few of their whiskeys and gins.

Found this place while waiting for our reservations at Laughing Ladies down the street. Really fabulous little bar with their own liquor. Highly recommend for a drink or three before or after dinner. They had some non alcoholic stuff for our kids.

Everybody goes skiing/biking/snowmobiling whatever, but how many people tour a gin distillery in the Rocky Mountains ? This is a great find, right down the street from Salida's restaurants and art galleries, an easy stop after lunch or before dinner. Brothers PT and Lee Wood give you the tour, not only telling you the story of their handcrafted gin and whiskey, but you can buy a cocktail or even a flight of their award-winning potions at their tasting bar. Tours not offered every day, so can be a good idea to check ahead. My husband really got into the engineering and science of it, I was too busy asking for cocktail recipes. Definitely a fun find!

Great decor and awesome bar. When inside you can watch them distill the whiskey and gin. Real cool if your there the right day. The drinks were real fun. Bartender clipped the basil from the pots growing inside and drinks made from scratch were fun! Try the float of all 3 whiskeys.
