We are disappointed to write this review because the hotel came recommended from a close friend who has stayed there for several years.

If there were a way to rate the Service as 0, we would. We arrived about 11AM to Salida on Friday and checked in. We were surprised to be held hostage to paying in advance for the room. Not much you can do about that when you arrive but it was to set the tone for the stay.

Although the room was clean, it didn't seem like air had moved through it for a while. So we bought an air freshener. Had a reasonable night's sleep prior to running the Salida Run Through Time on Saturday. We were surprised to return to an unmade room Saturday afternoon. The bed wasn't made and the 4'x4' bathroom hadn't been cleaned. Not that there was much cleaning to do as we hadn't taken showers yet. All we'd done was lay out our gear for the race and sleep there.

As weather was moving in, we decided to check out and get back to Boulder before getting stuck as we both had can't-miss meetings on Monday. You never know with mountain weather and we've regretted missing windows of opportunity in the past.

We did the dishes, took quick showers, and went to checkout. We were surprised to learn that we had taken an unoffered discount. "Because you took a 10% discount, that's why your room was not made up." What? When we explained we were never offered a 10% discount, the woman at the desk said, "Well, I didn't take the reservation." In other words, "That's YOUR problem."

When we explained that we needed to check out early due to weather and needed to get back to Boulder, she needed to "Call her manager." The manager said they'd refund us money only if they rented the room to someone else. That seems a little inconsistent with the policy posted on their web site, but after reviewing it again, you could interpret either way.

Frankly, our disappointment wasn't that we didn't get a refund. We accepted the price of the weekend from the start and the weather is not the hotel's problem. It was that we felt treated poorly and without respect. The story about the room not being made up felt like an excuse. There was never an apology for any misunderstanding about room rates, policies, or not making up our room. Nothing that felt like an olive branch to bridge the gap between our bad experience and the hotel's perceived view of us as nothing but income for the weekend.

It seems like a nice place, they do after all accept pets and that's important to me even though I rarely take my dog. But, we'd never stay there again and we don't recommend it. A pleasant experience with the staff, especially in a small town, is important to us.

We've stayed at the Woodland Motel four times now. It is always clean and the staff are always helpful. We invited friends from Austin to go with us on this trip. They had nothing but good things to say about the place.

This is a fine little motel all by itself on the northwest corner of Salida. The room was clean and the rate was fair. It is quiet, since it is not on the "main drag" of Highway 50. It is only a couple of minutes to the downtown area, where there are good restaurants, tourist shopping, and a little river walk from which you can watch kayakers in the evening.
If you are going rafting north of Salida, this is the closest motel.
The only problem that we encountered was that the room was actually too cool, even though the temperature outside was in the high 80s. We had to contact the management about it, and they found a way to fix the problem.
