Owner description: 14,000 Sq. Ft Mining Heritage Center. One of the BEST Mining Museums in the country! Also see the 1902 fully renovated 1902 jail next to Mining Museum. A must see!!!! Open Memorial Day Weekend to mid-October.

Entrance includes the jail and museum attached to it. Both give you an idea of what life was like in the early days of Silverton. You can easily spend an hour and a half. If you don't have the time, go just to see the jail! The museum is unexpectedly large and filled with mining history and what life was like at the time. Nicely laid out in various rooms and cellars. Something there to interest the whole family.

While you are there be sure to look up at the dome of the Courthouse next door. It gives you an idea of how prosperous Silverton was.

We visited two years ago and found it to be the best area historical museum we've ever visited. I've told everyone I know who visits the area to go and they unanimously agree. The displays and artifacts transport you straight back to the time when these mountain towns were teeming with mine operations. It makes a trip to the area much richer for understanding its history.

Personal memorabilia from the miners and the wealthy are interesting. The jail and the mining section have more pieces than when I was there two years ago, such as the toilet in the jail and the mining hats.

I last visited this museum a couple years ago and what is there now is as dramatic improvement as one could imagine. This museum is one of the finest mining museums in the country. The old jail in the adjacent building is very interesting but the mining displays and three levels of mine development is as good as it gets. They actually have a tramway with ore cars on the third level. The mining artifacts are first class with excellent descriptions and the other things tossed in for display makes this a don't miss place. I've seen a lot of mining museums and displays across the US and Canada and this one is just great.

Absolutely fantastic Mining Museum, tells the history of Silverton with rooms and rooms of original material from the mines plus many specimen samples. One of most interesting museums in a small town we have ever been to.
