“Excellent Adventure, Wonderful Staff”
Reviewed 10 February 2014

My friend and I visited at the beginning of October. We were greeted by Mary who was very pleasant and helpful. We took the tour in the open top suburban to clear lake with Arlo. He was an excellent guide, very courteous and attentive to our needs. He made sure we were comfortable, as it was a little brisk out. In addition to the beautiful scenery he would also stop and let us get photos. The tour was well worth it and made for a wonderful memory. I highly recommend taking a tour with San Juan, excellent adventure, wonderful staff!!!

“Took us to Engineer Pass”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

I called this company during off season to book our jeep tour. We had a truck with an open top so that you could stand up, hold on to the rail, and take pictures from the top. Our tour guide, Grady, was a veteran high country driver who let us decide where we wanted to go on our tour. The group was small with just me and my husband and one other passenger so it was very personalized. He let us stop and get pictures where we wanted and go at our own pace. He took us to Engineers Pass and a ghost town, Animas Forks. Along the way, he gave us a good overview of the history of the area and was very informative as well as polite and courteous. He also took us around the Alpine Loop. The scenery was beautiful the higher you got in altitude. I was very pleased with our tour.

“Three years in a row”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

We have a group of a dozen or so that visit Silverton in late June every year, some own and bring their ATV's on the trip but others rent from San Juan Back Country. Mary has worked with us and provided excellent service renting five to eight units to our group. We have had only one ATV that had trouble and SJ brought out another vehicle to replace it. Excellent, friendly service. Mary and team do want every one to have a first class experience. Can't wait to get back in June 2014.

“Friendly Fantastic Fun”
Reviewed 30 December 2013 via mobile

We had a great time in the San Juan backcountry snowmobiling through beautiful scenery. Our guides Larry and Jessica were very friendly, helpful, considerate and fun. Excellent equipment and loaner gear. Matched the trails perfectly to our skill level through 2-hour trip. As we got better they took us on more exciting trails. Nice to find such great Texas hospitality in Colorado. We highly recommend and hope to visit again!

“Amazing experience with our family!”
Reviewed 24 December 2013 via mobile

We were very impressed with San Juan Backcountry Snowmobile Tours. We had looked at several other companies in the area in the days leading up to our trip. We called another company and they promised to "call us right back". When we didn't hear from them 2 days later, we called SJ Backcountry. They were friendly, courteous, and helpful on the phone. We assumed that they were located close to most of the other outfits we had looked at. As we began our drive, though, we realized they were quite a bit further up the road. Located just 7 miles south of Silverton, we were so very glad that we had misjudged the location! The snow was much better at that altitude, as were the views!
They furnished helmets and wonderful instructions on how to operate their sleds. Our guides were really friendly and informative as well. We actually flipped one of our machines, on accident, (due to bad driving--not bad instruction) and the rear guide was off his machine in a flash making sure we were all okay. They were very concerned with safety (we had our 8 and 10 year old kids with us), but also intent that we have a great time. The lead guide was very good at judging the speeds with which we would be comfortable, and took us on trails that gradually got more technical, as we became better at handling the sleds.
The only advice I would give, is give yourself plenty of time to get to the location--especially if it has snowed recently. The drive is spectacular, and adds significantly to the experience. However, the roads have lots of switch backs and sharp turns. You will be driving slow to make the turns, so don't gauge the travel time by the mileage. Also, take your camera--the mountains are breathtaking. The guides will make stops occasionally for photos, and they even offered to take a few with our whole family together--which is always a treat, since the photographer hardly ever gets to be in the family photos!
The thing that we loved the most, though, is that this outfit appeared to be a small family-run business. We always like supporting family business, and it was fun to interact with this group.
Well done, SJ Backcountry! We hope to return again in the future.
