Cafeteria style, excellent food, lots of choices, never disappointed-- very expensive however. But everything during ski season is expensive. One can also sit down, and be served in Gwen's. They have a small side restaurant that also has excellent food and great service.

Gwynn's High Alpine restaurant is technically two restaurants, a upscale sit-down with waiter service, and a more conventional on mountain cafeteria style restaurant. The later is more economic than the upscale restaurant, with a different menu. The food at the sit-down restaurant is easily the best on the mountain, though devoting the time it takes to a rather elaborate meal on a nice ski day is not to my liking. In contrast it is rather easy to get in and out for a quick but good lunch in the cafeteria section of the restaurant. My favorite is the Bratwurst, but there is a good selection of other ski-fare available such a salads, pizza, stews, grilled burgers, cheese sandwiches and the like. The only real competition food quality wise is the new Elk Camp restaurant, but give Gwynn's the edge food wise. The only negative is that the restaurant is in a dated building. with lots of stairs to navigate. The rest rooms are two or three flights of stairs away (unless you are in the upscale sit-down restaurant which has its own rest rooms). Three flights of stairs in ski boots or even in snowboard boots is not really a joy.
The rest room bother and the general dated ambiance of the building does seem to be taking a toll, as the restaurant is substantially less crowded since the newer Elk Camp restaurant opened. That building is new with single floor access to everything, and thus no trumping up and down stairs in ski boots, all in a very cleanly designed piece of architecture. Not necessarily a plus for Gwynn's, this means that Gwynn's is generally pleasantly uncrowded, and easy to navigate through for a quick lunch (Elk Camp being hopelessly crowded most of the time). Gwynn's also benefits by being the preferred location for most locals, and you can expect far better advice as to best skiing on the mountain for the day your there.

We made the mistake of going to Gwyn's on our second day of skiing. We missed a day! If given the opportunity, we would have breakfast and lunch each day we were there. Service is fantastic, food is perfect, wine list is lovely ... and the crocs vs. ski boots option is the proverbial "icing".

This restaurant needs to be cleaned from top to bottom. The smell is horrible, and the restrooms are inconvenient. Way to expensive for the fare that it served.

Gwyn's is a wonderful treat. We visit snowmass a couple of weeks each winter and never miss a meal at Gwyn's High Alpine for lunch. The daily specials never disappoint, lunch can last as long or short as you desire, and the wait staff is super friendly.
