Snowmass Mountain Chalet
Ranked #7 of 13 Hotels in Snowmass Village
Reviewed 2 April 2009

This was a great location, nice unpretentious hotel, for a great price. The breakfast was great and we loved being able to walk everywhere--good access to the gondola, and mountain, and snowmass village shops. Not luxurious--but good sized rooms, friendly service, and a great value.

Arguably the best location in Snowmass. If your first priority when visiting a ski resort is to ski, and you care more about great access to the mountain than about superfluous luxuries and cloying overservice, then this is the hotel for you.

This is true ski-in, ski-out at a mountain that has something for everyone, from endless miles of cruisy groomers to real alpine adventure, whether lift serviced in the Cirque or a short hike to Hanging Valley. And there's a lot more of all of the above in the other Aspen mountains and the backcountry nearby. But Snowmass is the place to stay if you're here to ski. It's really easy to hop a free bus into Aspen at night to eat and drink.

We stayed here for 12 nights in Feb, skied Snowmass more than half of those days and Aspen Mountain and Highlands the others. Went into Aspen for dinner about five or six times. So easy to get around. We would love to have stayed another 12 nights. To paraphrase Dr Johnson, anybody who tires of Aspen Snowmass is tired of [the good] life, or simply doesn't enjoy skiing and dining as much as our family.

The Mountain Chalet is not exactly the prettiest building on the mountain, but when you're staying there you hardly care, you're not looking at the hotel, you're looking out over the slopeside pool to the rest of the beautiful village. And although nothing about this place is pretentious or upscale, it has all the amenities you could ask for: from the pool to the exercise room to wireless internet to cheap laundry, all really well maintained in the right kind of no-nonsense spirit.

It seems to attract a friendly, unpretentious crowd from all over the country and beyond. There are plenty of kids and families and conversations in the pool at the end of each day. Share tables at breakfast also keep it convivial. The breakfast, like the hotel, is more functional than fancy, but it's good pre-ski fuel nonetheless. We never came back down the mountain for the soup lunch, but the option is there for the less adventurous or to save a few bucks.

The room decor is motel-esque, but very comfortable and perfectly adequate for people who don't plan to spend a lot of time looking around their rooms. And I've stayed in plenty of far more expensive hotels in Snowmass and other ski resorts that didn't have such a great outlook from the rooms. The common room near the entrance is better furnished and very cozy and 'lodge-y', with a big fireplace and great views over the home hill. The Snowmass Mall (lots of relatively cheap and cheerful food options, and ski shops and services) is right next door to the hotel, and the station for the little skittle gondolas down to the new base village (kids ski school and other bars and restaurants) runs from early to late outside the hotel as well.

I wish every great ski resort had a no frills yet no compromise accommodation option like the Snowmass Mountain Chalet. Rumour is the Chalet won't survive the continued yuppification of Snowmass over the next few years, but they're still taking bookings up to mid 2010, so hurry to have an affordable Snowmass vacation while you still can.

We are definitely booking a return trip.

Just came home from staying here for 4 nights. The hotel is placed perfectly on the mountain with true ski in / ski out. We had rooms 102 and 104 which are on the 1st floor with the pool just a few steps away.
The breakfast and lunch were a bonus on the trip and saved us all sorts of money as everything is overpriced (even if it is good).

The staff was courteous and helpful.

The only thing that I didn't like was the air was 'dry' even with the humidifier running for a few days. This might be a problem with other resorts as you are up about 8,000 ft

I can't wait to come back here again

My husband and I stayed at the Snowmass Mountain Chalet for four nights with our two dogs. The hotel gave us a room on the ground floor, with direct access to a quiet grassy area right off our room. It was an excellent set up for pet owners.

We were accompanied by four other people, who stayed in different rooms. They all approved of their rooms and of the hotel accommodations.

The room was very clean when we arrived, and was kept clean during our entire stay. When we had to leave the dogs in the room unattended and undisturbed, the staff would leave fresh towels and glasses by the door for us to bring into the room ourselves. The beds were comfortable.

The room had PLENTY of storage for the excessive amount of stuff we brought with us. There was a nice sized refrigerator in the room for storing our snacks and drinks. The bathroom area was a little small, but we made do.

We used the pool and hot tub one night, and they were warm and clean. The dogs weren't allowed in the pool area, which kept us from using it more often. The hotel and pool back right up onto the ski run, which made for a nice quiet setting at the edge of Snowmass Village.

Breakfast was included in the price of our room. Breakfast in the summer when we were there was basically one or two hot items each day, with breads and cereals and fruits every day. It was decent, but it would have been nice to have a little more choice of what we ate. Diners are seated as they arrive at tables of 8 seats, so you may be seated with strangers each day. We had to specially request to be seated with our friends on a couple days when we arrived at different times.

The hotel has a large lounge area off the lobby that made a great place to meet up with the rest of our party. There was a computer with free internet access located there, as well as a book with a copy of all of the menus of the restaurants in Snowmass Village, along with a few from Aspen. We enjoyed Montagna and Rustique in Aspen, and Il Poggio in Snowmass Village.

Parking leaves something to be desired. There is no guest parking at the hotel - you have to walk a block or two through the village, and up/down a hill to get to the parking lots. Parking is free, and was readily available, but it was a bit of a hike. They do allow you to load and unload your vehicle at the door to the hotel when you arrive or depart, though.

All in all, we had a pleasant stay at this hotel. It's nothing really special, but I believe it was a good value for the price we paid, and it met our needs rather well.

Stayed here with family for a couple of nights . I will never ever stay here , the attitude of the front desk manager is disgusting . she never smiles , not responsive , not helpful . The hotel is ok.. but this kind of attitude from the hotel staff just spoils the vacation .. i would not recommend this hotel ....

The hotel is tucked into Snowmass Village, close to pretty much everything in the area (that we did anyway!). The room was clean, very spacious, and had a ski lodge feel to it. It had a small balcony and refridgerator, two huge pluses in our book. The breakfast, which is included, was a perfect start to our days and the internet in the lobby was of great use. Just down the drive, a quick walk away, is the Village Mall, which houses cute shops and restaurants (Nardi's was excellent for dinner). Also, the hotel was convenient to the biking trip we had booked through Blazing Adventures - only a 5 minute walk to the meeting spot!

I've stayed in the Mountain Chalet several times and my experience has been universally satisfying. This is a decent hotel, with good (and unobtrusive) service close to the ski lifts. The staff was helpful, gave good hiking advice.

I especially appreciated free WiFi, although if you need to be wired, you should probably get a room close to the main router. My room was in a faraway corner and i had some access problems.
