“Always a great experience”
Reviewed 23 June 2011

I've been to this hotel many many times with my family. We get one big unit with a few rooms, a kitchen, and a living room. All the kids get really excited to come here. There are two massive hot tubs next to the pool that we visit everyday. The staff is great here. If it's winter, you can walk right over across the street to the slopes. If it's summer, you can mountain bike close by. Beautiful entrance and great food. They toned down the breakfast buffet, which use to be really good. Oh-so-many pillows to choose from to get you comfortable at night. The pool uses saltwater now so you don't feel all chlorine-y when you get out. Went to the spa one time, wasn't a great experience, though everyone else in my party loved it, so I'd give it another try sometime.

My husband and I booked a room through the Steamboat Grand website - a Deluxe King.

The second floor location was good although one night we could hear a loud party going on below us.

The bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed waking to the sun coming up over the mountain.

My one small issue was that it was hard to find the mat for the bathroom floor - I used a towel until I realized that the mat was tucked away in the closet! The robes were a nice touch, and the morning newspaper was appreciated.

We would stay here again but I think the value is much better in the summer than in the winter.

My wife and I cashed in our RCI Exchange points for a week in a Studio at Steamboat Grand during "Mud Season" (truly off season!) in order to travel around the area of Northern Colorado in the fourth week of May. Our primary interest was to see some of the areas Spring wildflowers, the beautiful willow trees as they bud out, and in general enjoy the scenic beauty of the area.

The week fit our busy "retired" schedule and we had to use the RCI Exchange points or lose them! Our primary RCI property is in Cabo and RED (until they recently changed to a points system and it is the highest number) and we had anticipated when we were booking that we would have had a room with a view. We were advised during the booking process that RCI exchanges were assigned Studios which don’t have impressive views . The Steamboat Grand is indeed "grand" in appearance, both from outside and inside, with a magnificent two level entry area.

On arrival, we were very warmly greeted by a "bellhop" who assisted us with our luggage and a very friendly reception desk clerk who quickly checked us in and gave us a verbal tour of the property which matched our online review of their website. Mud Season is slow in Steamboat Springs and so was our week within The Steamboat Grand. That suited us perfectly as we found plenty of touring activity, or not, to keep us busy!

The Steamboat Grand is first and foremost a very large, well placed building with spectacular views from the rooms (other than Studios), with ownership for many, if not all, of the rooms and large multiple bedroom suites. Rooms that are not in use by owners are rented out to guests who book the rooms. In season, i.e., other than the two mud seasons in the Spring and Fall, the hotel is very busy with use by both owners and guests. Rooms and suites have cooking stoves, pots and pans and eating utensils, refrigerators, dish washers, and a dining table area. Ours was equipped with all of these things.

Our Studio had a direct view of the small hill out back of the hotel and if we stood on our tippy-toes, and leaned far to the left, we could see the northern end of the ski area and the fence that surrounds the swimming pool. That was okay with us as well as we spent much of our time away from the hotel taking in the spectacular scenery in the area. The hotel is very well situated for skiers, bikers and day-hikers during the appropriate season!

During our stay, food service was non-existent at the hotel other than some simple goodies at their "deli" (open in the morning only) which did not appeal to us. We slept in late and munched down cereal and fruit purchased at the local Safeway. Lunch or Dinner or a combined meal was readily available at any one of 15 or 20 local restaurants in the nearby downtown and so the seasonal closures of the hotel restaurants did not bother us. On our last night there, a Thursday night, the hotel did have the first of several days of planned evening meals (5 p.m. to 9 p.m.) in their Chaps Bar. We ate at about 7:30 p.m. and we were told that we were the only guests who took their evening meal there. We had sliders and salads and they were great! Excellent wine as well.

We found the Queen sized bed in our studio suite to be very comfortable. We slept quite well each night! All of the equipment, to include the cable television (which we didn't turn on until the next to last night and then to check out the weather forecast), refrigerator, dish washer, etc., all worked perfectly well. Our laptop worked very well with the included Wifi service. Daily room service was available and good.

During our stay, there were rain and snow squalls which kept us indoors on several days. We used the very spacious parking garage and the hallways/stairwells of the hotels to do our morning walk of several miles. There is a great exercise area which we visited but didn't use. We did use the pool area to sit and relax and read on one of the bright sun filled days.

With respect to the very spacious parking garage, there were only a dozen or so (maybe even less) vehicles parked there each night. Closing the door or activation of the alarm system would create echoes that would reverberate for five or six seconds. Great entertainment for those who might want to liven up an otherwise slow time in between activities.

Room Tip: Book early.

After a significant snowstorm- my reservation had to be cancelled. I fought the resort tooth and nail to give me a credit. They did- however until the end of ski season- some arbitrary date in April- the date has passed and they will not accommodate me. i've stayed here before for business, and its a glorified second rate motel room. The Sheraton up the road is waaaaaaay nicer, the staff is much more knowledgable and friendly. At the steamboat grand, it's almost as if they believe they are doing you a favor in you paying large amounts of money to stay there. Do yourself a favor- spend less and get better service at the Fairfield, or spend the same and be blown away at the sheraton and its staff and amenities.

, Manager at The Steamboat Grand, responded to this review, 28 April 2011
During the reservations process for the Steamboat Grand, we offer every single guest the option to purchase travel protection insurance for any unforseen circumstances. If a guest has not purchased this trip protection plan, but they are within the cancellation penalty time period, we extend a credit for the amount of their vacation to be used for a future stay at our property. We always give our guests until the end of that particular season to simply re-book their stay with us. This does not mean that this guest needs to stay at our property before the credit expiration date, but they do need to schedule some new vacation dates. As a courtesy, we often work with our guests to extend their credits to be used, and allow them more time to plan their next trip to Steamboat, if necessary. Although the time to use these vacation credits at our property does expire, we believe that the time that we give our guests to create another vacation at the Steamboat Grand is more than reasonable.

My husband was home on R&R and we wanted to do something special for just the two of us. We left the kids for the night with a sitter and headed to Steamboat Springs! The Steamboat Grand was fantastic! The room was much nicer than I had expected. We loved the tub in our room! The view from our room was great. We looked out over gondola square and the mountain. The breakfast options in The Cabin was the only disappointment. We enjoy lots of whole fresh fruits and maybe a bagel but the only fruit they had to offer was a granny smith apple. Lots of eggs and bacon though! We ate dinner at the Three Peaks Grill. It was expensive and not that great. We visited Strawberry Hot Springs and had a great time after the crazy college kids left. The after dark clothing optional part was fun! We also took an afternoon horse back ride at the Saddleback Ranch. Two hours was not long enough and it was worth every penny. We loved it!

Not only were the rooms comfortable and lovely, the staff at the Grand made our stay more enjoyable. They truly took care of us and showed their gratitude in multiple ways. The day that we were to drive home was snowy and wet and the front desk checked the roads for us to make sure they were passable. Ski storage staff seemed genuinely pleased that we had a good time and that we would return. Can't wait to return and be pampered again. Thanks to all who take their jobs seriously!
