When we checked in they took our bags up to our room for us while we went to pick up ski gear. Got back - laundry in room but the bed wasn't even made and there were dirty dishes in the bedroom. Called housekeeping. While we were at dinner, someone came and changed the bed but they didn't bother with the dirty dishes. If you have the privacy placard on the door, they don't seem to come back later to tidy up the room. Restaurants expensive and food is mediocre. Location, however, is good. The only better place I can see for location is the Sheraton Steamboat - which also looks much better maintained as well. The town of Steamboat and the mountain skiing definitely make this worth the trip, though.

If you are looking for a nice place to stay at the base of the mountain, only a couple blocks from the gondola, this is the place to stay. The shuttle service to area restaurants and shopping is great. Also the outdoor hot tubs were excellent. DO NOT buy the breakfast package with your room. The servcie in the restaurant is horrible and the food is not much better. Stayed for 5 days and each day breakfast was that bad! The last day we went someplace else to have breakfast.

Let's start with the positives - The common areas are beautiful, the rooms themselves are attractive, the ski rental folks were very helpful, the front desk people were very helpful. Also, some parts of the rooms were wonderful, The cleaning folks were great as well, and the pool/gym facilities were great. Carol, our main shuttle service driver, was incredibly great, as was the shuttle service in general that leaves and picks up on the half hour from most places in town.

However...

Some of the staff seemed a little out of place. The folks at the restaurant where we had our (ok, not great) morning breakfast seemed stunned when confronted with groups larger than 4...literally stunned, as if such things simply never had occurred to them. The second of the shuttle drivers, a person in the sundries shop...while there were some great folks working there as previously mentioned, there were some whose attitudes were poor or sullen and a little off-putting. Also, be prepared for a hike to get to the slopes if you are doing your renting from this place...the ski and boot storage is 3 flights of stairs up from the ground.

Finally, make sure you confirm the layout of your room prior to check in. We received a '3 bedroom, 3 bath' condo for three couples, and the layout caused problems. 2 bedrooms had there own bathrooms, very nice ones I might add...and the third bedroom had access to the worst of the three bathrooms, in a small common area upstairs from the 3rd bedroom. Without even a mirror in it, the 3rd bedroom folks had to trek through the living room, up a flight of stairs and through another common room to get to 'their' bathroom. While this could possibly be acceptable for two adult couples with kids staying in the third bedroom, it was completely unacceptable for three adult couples, one of which was forced to endure a hostel-like environment with the bathroom on another floor.

So do your due diligence (this was the first, and last, trip I hadn't planned myself in years) and make sure this place is right for you specifically. If your room layout is satisfactory, you don't mind navigating a few flights of stairs with your ski boots on, and can deal with an occasional unpleasant staff member, the rest of this place is really top notch. A bathroom on the same floor as the 3rd bedroom would have earned this place 4 stars, in all fairness...it's not perfect, but it's pretty good.

Rooms and service were great. Fitness center and pool aren't as high end as other ski resorts I have been at

Very attentive staff, very clean rooms - granite countertops in our one bedroom/one bath condo w/ views of the mtn. Free hot chocolate/cookies at 4 pm. Loved the full kitchen - great for us to ski and walk back for lunch each day. Nice furniture. Stored skis/boots at the mtn. for free. Free wi-fi also good. Free coffee in the morning before restaurant opened. The breakfast in restaurant was mediocre. Big heated swimming pool and jacuzzi outside - very family-oriented. Nicely decorated for Christmas. Would definitely return w/ kids.

Expensive hotel, but offers all those things you want from a premium hotel. Our deal included a breakfast buffet, on-site rentals, ski storage right at the mountain base, a nice spa, and a huge 2 bedroom condo with kitchen, several restaurants, and underground parking.

Everything was clean and the room was well laid-out; slept 8. The service is good, but it isn't the Ritz. But people care and we were often asked if everything was OK. The bell hops work hard!

Location was perfect for a first-time visit to Steamboat. In the a.m., we grabbed a breakfast buffet, then walked across the street to the base area and grabbed our equipment at the Grand's storage area. A 50' walk to the snow and we were good to go.

We stayed at the Steamboat Grand for 9 nights in mid- December arriving very late on a Friday. We had been offered a discounted up-grade to a one bedroom suite with two bathrooms. Great bed- most welcome after travelling for nearly 24 hours from London. Very clean space with one full bathroom and one shower and loo. The kitchen was fully stocked- dishwasher, huge fridge freezer, full oven, microwave ect and the rooms had tv's, DVD's ect although I suspect if you had a standard room they might be quite small. Can't fault that part of the holiday at all. My issues were with the amount of noise outside the hotel at night- snowploughs starting at 2am and continuing through the night. People shouting and swearing in the street at midnight; it was like being in the middle of a Bristish City at chucking out time. Can honestly say neither of us got a full nights sleep the whole time we were there and as all rooms face the road, there was no option of moving to one that might have been quieter. We also noticed an awful lot of really bad language on the ski slopes. Don't get me wrong- we aren't middle aged fuddy-duddy's by any stretch of the imagination but for us to notice and comment there must have been lots!

Breakfasts at the hotel were tasty with lots of coffee and tea but it was the same choice every day so got a bit boring after four or five days. We ate out for the first four nights but were so unimpressed by the quality compared to the amount charged, we ended up going to City Markets great deli counter to buy and cook our own food in the kitchen we had. Avoid the 8th Street Steakhouse- overpriced and trades on it's gimmick of cooking your own steak. For $30+ dollars per steak, I want someone to cook it for me!!

We swopped our holiday from Stowe in Vermont to Steamboat at the last minute because of the lack of snow in the former and we both agreed towards the end of the hols that we much prefered Stowe- nice people, great value restaurants that served good food etc etc.

Oh and the other thing I found a little irritating was the charge of $7 per 15mins for using the internet and computer, and a charge of $2.50 per night 'resort tax' which was explained as a charge for the shuttle buses, pool and coffee supplies in the room!
