Description: A place for the hungry. The thirsty. The legendary. Some people actually think the Wright Brothers perfected human flight. Around here, we all know better. Carl Howelsen turned Steamboat into a playground, skis into wings, and mustaches into an art form. His adventurous spirit is our inspiration - and Carl’s Tavern is a place for adventurous spirits to call home. Here, the hospitality is genuine, the beer is cold, and the food is made from scratch. So come as you are, make yourself at home, and share a few of your own legendary stories. Just don’t try to one-up Carl; you’ll hurt yourself.

Had dinner with the family and really enjoyed a great meal. We tried the hot wings and oysters, which were very good. For dinner, we had the meatloaf, artichokes, salmon, burger and ribs. The food is freshly made and it is clear that this family owned place makes up many of their own recipes and sauces. Kudos to the chef!

We ate at Carl's while staying in Steamboat Springs. It has the feel of a sports pub with screens showing different athletic events, but the menus seems to be a cut above the standard sports pub. My wife and I had steak which was prepared very nicely and added some shrimp that were very tasty for a small up charge. Sides are ordered separately which raises the overall price a bit, but we felt it was worth the price. Craft beers are available.

To counter balance some of the poor reviews...

First of all, the name has "tavern" in it, so those expecting a nice, quiet, family meal should check their expectations.

Secondly, the food is all made from scratch - even the BBQ chips, the pickles, everything! So you are paying for quality.

Third, yes the sides are separate but they are family-style and huge portions!

Fourth, this is mostly a reservations-only place. So if you walk in and think there are tables "open" and wonder why you're not being seated, it's because those tables are reserved for someone else for the time before you will be done with your meal. The staff is not being rude! That said, make sure you make reservations! Or don't be disappointed if you stop in and they tell you they are booked.

Now, for the review. This is the place the locals go. That should tell you something; it always does! It's a sports bar type place so expect it to be loud, or there to be live music, etc. You may need to walk as parking is usually a premium. It's right off the river and across from the ski jump and rodeo areas, just off the main street.

The food is fabulous! Make sure to share sides! And don't let the Brussels sprouts scare you off! These are not typical. They are individual leaves that are deep fried and sprinkled with seasonings and parmesan cheese (or something like that). This is the only way I will make them at home now - buy them fresh and prep them like Carl's!

The kitchen is an open area where can watch your food being made, oysters being prepped, etc. There is also a huge bar and a lovely patio. It's on the corner of the condo/retail building so a great place to people watch.

I don't drink alcohol so I can't comment on those drinks. But everything else is fantastic! Be sure to have dessert, too!
