I will join in the chorus of praise here and say that this is one of my family's very favorite experiences.
We drove from Steamboat Springs in our rental car to meet Sarah and Dan. We were a little concerned at first that the sedan would make it once we got to the snowy areas, but we had no problems. Keep in mind, you'll turn off of the paved and cleared roads onto a mountain road that takes you into the park. It is not maintained during the winter, so there may be small rocks and snow covering the road. We're from the South, and still survived, :) but it's worth mentioning. Dan can also meet you in the closest town if you feel more comfortable that way.
We love that this is a small family owned company that uses rescue dogs. They have so much love for the dogs, and my son was thrilled to meet the pooches and learn their names.
Sarah and Dan had us help feed the dogs and get them ready for their big run. The dogs are ready to RUN RUN RUN when they get in their harnesses! I mushed a team, and Sarah went with my wife and son while Dan stayed close by with the snowmobile. They gave us very good instructions, and even though the power of those dogs is surprising at first, we had no problems "steering" them. My son was six at the time, and Sarah rode with him, letting him mush the dogs for one section of the trip.
As others have said, the Routt National Forest is breaktakingly beautiful. When you ride with Snow Buddies, you are the only ones out there for miles. On our run, there was even a gentle snowfall. It was a picture perfect day. Sarah took one of our cameras and got some great pictures of the family throughout the ride.
At the halfway point, the dogs rest while you go inside the little cabin and enjoy some treats. My family eats gluten-free, and Sarah had a home made gluten-free chocolate tart ready for us. It was amazing. It was really touching that she went to the extra trouble for us. She also had hot tea or hot chocolate available. A couple of the dogs even made their way into the cabin for a cuddle. ;)
There are park bathrooms next to the cabin, and my son enjoyed playing in the snow during the down time.
After some pictures (the cabin location is a GREAT place to get pictures with the dogs - you can't beat the mountains in the background!), we headed back down. My son helped water the dogs and get them back in the truck.
As others have said, Sarah and Dan are very kind and very nice! This is a very different experience. You don't feel like a tourist, you feel like you are hanging out with family and friends (and some great dogs!) You really do feel like a member of their family by the time the trip is over.
Do not hesitate to try this unique experience, especially if you have kids!
