Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa

Reviewed 25 March 2014

We spent 2 nights at Devil's Thumb and wish we could have stayed longer. Beautiful scenery away from everything. Really a great place to relax and unwind. The bed was so comfortable we didn't want to get up. Next time we go we will take advantage of the outside activities.

Room Tip: Rooms are generous as are bathrooms. Ask for a suite with a fireplace.

Two friends and I decided to treat ourselves to a 24-hour getaway at DTR. As always, the service was outstanding (friendly and attentive); the accommodations luxurious in their rustic way; the landscape and the buildings beautiful. Our experience at the spa was as pampered and relaxing as we could have hoped, and we all left feeling like the trip had been much longer than 24 hours. We were relaxed and revitalized. I cannot wait to go back.

It was our first trip to Colorado and choosed Devil's Thumb Ranch because I liked the photos on their website. I was not disappointed, it's looks amazing.
We were in small buildings, one of the lowest price for accomodation at Devil's Thumb. It was nice! We were the only guest for the 2 nights there. It was amazing, the hall, the kitchen, the drawing room on the first and second floor. We were sad we dont went there with bigger family....
The restaurant in the main building is amazing, we discovered the other amenities, great!
So the site is excellent! Good job!

Our problem was with the staff there. The receptionist was not so nice, just give as a key, but nothing conversation or asking anything, it was very neutral, just did the job and that's it. For such a great lodging I am expecting much more professional staff!

The very negative point is the restaurant.
We went there for lunch. The selection on the menu was poor.
We has been waited for 40 minutes for our simple lunch. When we asked one waitress about that, after that we got our lunch shortly. I think this was the manager. Out waitress at the end told us we dont have to pay for the lunch as we waited long. It was good and very fair, although our lunch was close to uneatable (believe me, it was).
Thank to the manager's decision to not paying for the lunch, we decided to give a credit to the restaurant for dinner.
We went there and I asked an orange juice. It was old, had alcoholic taste as it was opened days (weeks?) ago. How it's possible with such an overcrowd restaurant?
Once we got our steak, we calmed down, as it was really amazing! Will never forget!
(My question to the manager: how would you rate that overall? Uneatable lunch, no bill, rotten orange juice, outstanding steak)

So I'm going excellent rate for Devil's Thumb Ranch because the owners created something what should be great, only the staff / chief need to be changed.

And will definitely return :)

Devils Thumb is such a great place to stay- quaint, peaceful, beautiful....and close to Winter Park so you can still downhill ski, go to restaurants, tubing in Frisco, snowmobile, etc. Although there is no reason to leave Devils Thumb since there are trails for cross country skiing, showshoeing, sleigh rides, sledding, pool/hot tub, spa, smores around the fire, etc. The list goes on and on. The beds are very comfortable and bathrooms are nice and clean. The resort has a very serene, lodge feel but still is very modern. We ate at Heck's and the food was very good, service was also great as well. It is a great resort for family, or as a romantic getaway.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a fireplace- they have more space. All rooms would have a great view though.

We loved our stay at DTR. Our gorgeous suite in the High Lonesome Lodge was the epitome of cozy ski lodge, complete heated tile flooring, bathroom sauna, fireplace, and breathtaking views. Some of the staff went above and beyond to make our experience special. The gentleman (Tyler?) at the coffee shop, Anthony at the stable, and restaurant staff were especially polite and attentive. Unfortunately, we got very little information or welcome at check in, and were literally handed a map and room keys--unaware that our lodging was in an entirely different building.
Another point to be aware of when staying at DTR is that you should be prepared to walk. If you stay in a cabin, you will basically need a car or be ready to walk 1/2 a mile to and from the resort center. Resort transportation is available when scheduled.
The only issue I had with DTR during our 4 day stay was the limited choice of food. Dining is limited to the coffee shop and 2 restaurants (one of which is more upscale and not what we wanted, traveling with kids). The food situation gets a bit monotonous and I think the menu could benefit from expansion or a little C-store (however the food here is delish). If we stay here again, I will be sure to request a room with kitchenette. Overall, a fabulous place for a relaxing long weekend with tons of amenities. We hope to visit again soon!

Room Tip: High Lonesome Lodge is a short walk from the main lodge and is brand new.

Devil's Thumb Ranch is the quintessential Colorado luxury resort experience. The staff and the attention to detail at this beautiful resort is without equal in Colorado. The rooms are large yet cozy, the bathrooms are beautifully appointed (immense luxurious soaking tubs) and the grounds are a pleasure to the eye. The Ranch House Restaurant is elegant yet relaxed and The Rocky Mountain Trout entree was one of the best dishes my husband and I have experienced in years. Spectacular! The spa experience was second to none, exceeding my every expectation with regard to the quality of the masseuse, steam room, sauna, showers and amenities. DTR's is an elegantly crafted, singularly Colorado style resort that transports you from the moment you enter the main lobby. The Nordic trails are wonderful and showcase the beauty of the valley and majestic mountain vistas. We will return again and again to this beautiful resort.

Room Tip: Main lodge is wonderful
