“Just a great place to go”

Fantastic, fantastic location. Superb outdoor activities. Lovely rooms. Do the rafting with Mike - he's amazing. Zipwire guys were great too. Pool nice. Activities store was great. Marvellous sense of the great outdoors all around. Only drawbacks where that the service in the restaurant was pretty chaotic; it felt at both breakfast and dinner like there was no manager and the junior staff didn't really know what was going on or have anyone directing them. Food took a while and came in strange sequence to all the tables around us. That led us to go out for dinner most nights - which was a shame for the hotel, which otherwise is just superb. But these are all minor points. The place is great, we are going back and you should go there.

I've stayed in lots of "Dude Ranches" more to please the kids than myself, but this place caters to everyone. Despite it's remote and picturesque location nestled between Devil's Thumb promontory (super day hike) it's large and quite luxurious--and the service unbeatable. From the excellent array of surprisingly affordable daily adventures on offer to the food, to the comfortable, tasteful, glamorous cabin-like rooms, the "ranch" has wonderful style. Only downside was that the food orders kept on getting screwed up and were remarkable delayed--the downside of having a lot of nice but probably less experienced newbies on special visas from overseas. Upside was that the rest of the staff were exceptional--especially the folks running the day adventures--Mike, who took our enormous group rafting, was one of the most standout guides any of us had ever experienced.

We will definitely come again--maybe even make this a tradition.

I have stayed at Devil's Thumb a few times, always on business (thought it really is better as a family or romantic getaway.) The place is simply stunning. If you have a picture of a quintessential rocky mountain valley, add in a high end resort which is entirely built to feel like a Colorado ranch, then you have Devil's Thumb.

The resort is located jsut past the Winter's Park ski resort in Tabernash. (It is about a 90 minute/ 2 hour drive from Denver. Pretty easy drive with one pass to get over.) The ranch itself is in a valley well off the main road, and takes up hundreds of acres. (The story behind it is interesting. Check out the website to learn the details, but the summary is that a Colorado billionaire bought the property with a mission to making the perfect mountain resort, and did not spare a dime in doing so.)

Spread over hundreds (maybe thousands?) of acres, it has hiking trails, fishing holes, horseback riding, archery, nordic skiing, and a spa. I was there on business so did not check out the activities, but it all looked great. Also on the site are a few restaurants, which are absolutely world class. (Also a world class wine cellar.) The food is also western (elk, buffalo), and fits in with the theme.

There are different accommodation options. I have always stayed in the main lodge. Rooms there are beautiful and large. Some have fireplaces, some do not. on the ground floor they have private desks. On the second floor they do not (but probably have better views and are a bit more private. There also are separate cottages a short walk away from the main lodge. I did not stay there, but heard great things about them. The cottages would be ideal if you have a family.

Pros:
- Stunning location and scenery. It does not get more beautiful than this.
- Everything is high end and well done. You feel like you are staying in a 150 year old lodge, but everything is impeccable and works;
- The place is so big that you are not tripping over people
- Great for either a romantic getaways or with family
- Food is fantastic and fits in the outdoors theme well.

Cons:
- Almost zero cell phone coverage, so expect to be disconnected from the world
- wireless coverage is spotty at best (hotel really should improve this)
- The rooms at night get super, super hot. Even sleeping with the windows open, it was stifling. The room has aircon, but does not work too well. (I assume this would be less of an issue in the winter.)
- OK, pet peeve here... the trail may for using the trails is terrible. Every time I used it for a run or a hike, i found it to be wildly inaccurate (and I was not the only one.) It is very easy to get lost. Generally this is not an issue as the valley is open so you can generally keep you bearings, but if it is foggy or raining, it could be an issue.
- The cardio equipment in the gym is very, very old (and the tv in the cardio room has maybe five stations.) One could argue that using an indoor gym in a place like this is a waste, BUT, when it is raining outside, people use it. It needs an upgrade.

Room Tip: Comments on the rooms in the main lodge: 1) Rooms on the west wing have fireplaces (at least the o...

We arrived after a long drive from Denver, tired and dry. We were cordially greeted by Shawn who took our bags and toured us to our wonderful large room. The room has a great fireplace, spacious deck with comfortable chairs, a magnificent bed and a bathroom that struck us silent on awe. It was fabulous--The staff went out of their way to help us and welcome us to the resort. The food was perfect as were the activities offered. It is on our "must return to" list for sure.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong if your choose the Main Lodge or the newest lodge.

We went for a family wedding - and loved the experience of staying here. We booked a suite -rather extravagant for just two of us but we loved it and our only regret was that we booked two nights and not longer. The bathroom was huge and included a pebbled walk in shower. The staff were helpful and friendly. The setting was fantastic and a great introduction to Colorado. The wedding was outdoors with a lovely meal afterwards in the barn. I would love to return......

Room Tip: I can definitely recommend a suite. There were only two of us but there was a second bedroom and bat...

I was really pleasantly surprised by this place. Just north of Winter Park, CO, this western-themed resort really does it right. Good service, an amazing property, and outstanding comfort and cleanliness. One of the nicest Colorado resorts I have ever stayed at, and I will come back for a family experience.

My two children and I recently stayed at the ranch and spent the first 3 nights in a cabin and the last 2 in the main lodge. We can't decide which one we liked better, both were beautiful! Each morning while staying in the cabin, we would walk to the main lodge for breakfast. Along the way we enjoyed the beautiful scenery, wildflowers and the horses. The kids would feed the horses apples every morning and determined they like Granny Smith the best! The cabin was so comfortable and quiet. The main lodge was equally as nice, comfortable, quiet, and both were beautifully decorated. The ranch has so many activities to choose from. My son went zip lining and had a blast! My daughter and I went paddle boarding and our instructor Jason was awesome. We both fell in the water two times and we are still laughing about how much fun that was. The kids also enjoyed the Cowpoke camp, they did crafts, went biking, hiking and learned all about the ranch.( Suzannah, Mitch and Megan, the kids miss you and talk about how much fun they had with all of you.) I spent some free time while the kids were at camp.I went to the spa for a facial, it was so relaxing. I really enjoyed walking around the lodge and looking at all of the beautiful antiques and paintings. There is as much to do inside as there is outside. We went bowling and played games in the game room and also watched a movie in the theater. As far as the food goes, well let's just say I'm hitting the treadmill a little harder since coming home! It was soo good! Each evening after supper, we would sit by the fire pit and make s'mores. The kids loved it and we HAD to do it every night during our stay. It was so much fun seeing them make new friends, run and play in the meadow, pet the horses, all while I enjoyed a glass of wine and soaked up the beautiful scenery. I just can't remember the last time I felt this relaxed on a vacation. If you are looking for a place to take your family and have the best vacation ever, Devil's Thumb Ranch is it. We made new friends, wonderful memories and can't wait to come back and make more!
