“The Quintessential Vail Atmosphere in a Restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2014

Ludwig's is located inside the Sonnenalp Hotel, and a bit difficult to find even once you are there. If you are looking for old world ambiance, this is it. Both the atmosphere and the service were impeccable. For a restaurant of the stature, our food experience was a bit of a mixed bag. My potato soup was outstanding, as was their preparation of rack-of-lamb. The sea bass served to my wife was another matter. For a restaurant that prides itself on its seafood, the fish was sub-par. It neither looked like, had the texture, nor tasted like sea bass (we are very familiar with most of the variants marketed under the name "sea bass"). In fairness, we should have asked for much more detail on the nature and preparation of the fish before hand (lesson learned). Their deserts were excellent.

“Lovely ambience & creative food presentations!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2014 via mobile

Four of us enjoyed dinner here & the place was packed! Despite having a large group seated near us, the noise level never really increased, which was quite nice! The service was a bit slow, but I'm sure it was due to the business of the restaurant & not to lack of effort on the part of our waiter. Three of us had the sea bass & it was served with a lovely parmesan risotto & bokchoy. The John Dory fish dinner looked fabulous, but I didn't taste it, so no feedback other than how it looked! The bread variety & quality is AWESOME & they even had great gluten free bread for my hubby! Like most Vail restaurants, the wine list is expansive & quite over priced. My guess is that they'd sell a lot more wine, if they lowered the prices a bit. We enjoyed a Washington state wine, Patrician Green "Old Vines" Pinot Noir & it was delicious with the fish. Had the price been more reasonable, we probably would've ordered a 2nd bottle. Just saying...! Once we ordered dessert, they brought us a plate piled high with green (apple flavored) cotton candy & a few mini-dessert treats...THEN our dessert! I'd skip dessert next time, knowing that they add this treat, as we were all pretty stuffed. Will I go back? Definitely!

“Authentic European in Vail”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014

Ludwig's is a place we did not know much about and neither did many of our friends but based upon some reviews we decided to take a chance and we are so glad we did. It's truly a beautiful restaurant reminiscent of being in the Alps. Interestingly seafood is featured here and we had some of the finest cured Salmon ever. We enjoyed Oysters, Lobster, Sea Bass and a beautiful Dover Sole filleted table-side. An extensive wine list is offered as are beautiful desserts and a nice selection of after-dinner drinks. As the check is presented they bring to each table home-made cotton candy which is an interesting treat and a step above what you get at carnivals! They have a nice lounge for relaxing before or after dinner with live piano music. Well worth a visit while in Vail.

“Old World Charm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2014

My husband and I braved a trip over Vail Pass in a snowstorm to go to Ludwig's. We loved the interior, comforting and charming. The service was top notch, and the food presented with such appeal. We loved every minute of it. I had the Alaskan Halibut which was excellent; my husband had the Sea Bass which he found a bit "fishy" in taste, more so than to his liking. Salads were delightful big leaves of greens, nicely presented. Our desserts were artful swirls of sugar highlighting our choices: mine the chocolate dessert served warm and not too sweet and my husband's a pear. Afterwards we joined a group listening to a really sparkly singer at the piano bar who sang Broadway hits and other songs fit for a Valentine's celebration.
