“Fantastic experience yet again!”
Reviewed 18 February 2008

We've just returned from a wonderful week's skiing, staying at the Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail for the second time. The overall ambience and charm of the hotel is second to none, and the service and courtesy of the staff could not be faulted. We stayed in a Blue Spruce suite, which was very pleasantly decorated with gentle rustic charm, but with all the facilties you would expect of a top hotel (except perhaps the shower, which was more of a trickle than a power shower). The breakfasts (included in the rate) were amongst the best I've ever had, and the restaurant choices for dinner (Ludwigs, Bully Ranch and Swiss Chalet) were all very good. But the icing on the cake has to be the spa and pool. There is nothing nicer than returning from a hard day's skiing into the heated indoor/outdoor pool or sitting in the indoor or outdoor jacuzzi with a home made smoothie in your hand! Bliss! We're already saving up to go back next year.

We decided to go to this hotel after stay some years ago in the other Sonnenalp hotel in Germany.

The place is marvellous and we enjoyed all the facilities of the hotel.

We have a lovely dinners everynight and the breakfast buffet is huge but excellent, you have so many things to try!!

The staff is friendly and very profesional.

All perfect

We stayed at the grand Sonnenalp in the centre of Vail during the low season and paid only $190 per night inclusive of tax for a Juniper room. This turned out to be an amazing deal. Although there is a great deal of building work going on in Vail, we felt the clear blue skies, amazing scenery and 'special offers' around town more than made up for it.

Our room was attractive with two extremely comfortable double beds, a flat screen TV and DVD player, heated floor in the bathroom and a very deep bath tub. The bathroom is a little tired-looking, but spotless and the products were OK (Gilchrist & Soames.). The fresh cookies each night were a nice touch. The only slight disappointment (environmentally speaking) was that our plentiful towels seemed to be changed every day and evening, although we never left any on the floor.

We ate in one of the hotel restaurants, Ludwig's, for the excellent price of $40 per person for three courses. The food was amazing, if a little rich!

The spa was attractive with a lovely pool, a couple of hot tubs, and a comfy seating area around a fire. The ladies' steam room and sauna are a little tired and in need of a re-furb, but the hot towels and the spa products in the shower were lovely. The men's steam room was not working on our one visit, and spa treatments were expensive.

The buffet breakfast was great with a wide choice, and an omelette station at weekends, served in a beautiful sunny conservatory. The only disappointment was the tea – the water wasn't hot enough and the cup too big, but I am quite fussy about tea!

The staff were excellent, plentiful and very helpful, and quickly started to recognise us and remember our names, even though the hotel was full!

Valet parking at the Sonnenalp is $20 per night, although there is free covered parking close by at this time of year.

For the price we paid, I think our overall experience deserved an 'excellent' rating, but for the class of hotel and the regular prices I have given an 'above average.'

We booked the adventure package for the weekend of October 5 and 6 for a Blue Spruce suite. The package included golf, spa treatments, or dinner coupons plus the breakfast buffet each moring. Very good value. Played golf on Friday. Excellent golf course, unfortunately they had recently aerated the greens. Had two spa treatments on Saturday. In the past we had stayed at the Marriott to add points to my platinum membership, but the Sonnenalp is in a much better location. The service at the Sonnenalp is also much better than at the Marriott.

Overall enjoyed our stay. A few small problems knocked my rating to an above average from excellent. On Sunday morning we went to breakfast at 10:20 and were told there was a 30 minute wait to be seated. I went to the front desk to ask if there would be a problem with checking out at 11:30 due to the wait in their restaurant. Their first response was that we could go up to our room and finish packing and give our bags to the bellman. After giving some reasons why this wouldn't work for us, the clerk and front desk manager agreed to the later checkout. This left me feeling that the service was rigid and robotic. Service that makes things go like clockwork may be service in the interest of the hotel and not the customer. They had also made sure not to let us into a room until 4 pm went we arrived at 3:40pm. Another irritation was the updated bill that arrived 4 days after our checkout that added an item from the minibar. I immediately called and reminded them that we had declined the key to the minibar when we checked in. The person I talked with was quick to say she would take the charge off my credit card, but I should never have had to make the call.

We stayed a total of three nights at the Sonnenalp. We were upgraded to a 1 bed suite with a beautiful fireplace/soaking tub. Most of the rooms have balconies with flower boxes filled to the rim hanging off. Our room had no balcony as it was on the corner. We were able to switch to a room with a balcony, but would have sacrificed the larger suite, so we opted not to. We viewed many of the rooms as our whole group was staying at the hotel. We were there for a wedding taking place at the hotel. Many of the rooms were beautiful. We especially enjoyed the heated marble bathroom floors. Luxury! And also the free internet service. There is nothing more you could want at this hotel for service. Best part of stay ~ The breakfast buffet each morning. Wow!! This is how it should be done...let all the other aspiring hotels take note as to how the Sonnenalp does things. The food was fantastic! The scenery/grounds were beautiful! We also ate at the Bully Ranch for lunch in the hotel. I had a Great Hill Blue cheeseburger that was to die for. Loved being able to get our local great hill blue out in Colorado. The wedding was held in the restaurant of the hotel and the food was soooo good.
I would like also to mention too that we waited sometimes for the elevators. The hotel was full and that would be expected, , but what was disconcerting was that the housekeeping staff was riding the guest elevators instead of the service elevators. We often had to wait. This did not impact our stay negatively at all, but if we were snobs, and paid peak season prices, it may have bothered us. I would give the Sonnenalp a good 5* for an excellent stay and excellent service. The Vail Village area is absolutely magical! Try the Creperie down the street, good gelato/crepes. Try La Bottega for italian. Try Tap room for excellent burgers.

We stayed at the Sonnenalp for 2 nights in September, on the recommendation of previous TA reviews. We hadn't been to Colorado before but had been staying in Castle Rock, visiting Denver itself, the Rocky Mountain Nat Park, Colorado Springs etc. which were all great but Vail is different in that it is much "prettier" and Alpine-like than other perhaps more rugged, stark areas of the Rockies. We fell in love with it immediately and the Sonnenalp does not disappoint.

It is very centrally located and the exterior is just like a Swiss hotel, only a few stories high with flower-filled baskets overhanging from the balconies. I don't think I've ever had a more welcoming check-in from a receptionist - she was German but with an excellent grasp of English and had obviously done her homework and immediately knew who we were, and was very thorough in her explanation of both the Hotel and the surrounding area.

Our room was lovely and immaculate (as were all public areas) - all modern touches but still managing to retain the charm of an Alpine hotel - no mean feat! We had 2 Queen beds, big flat-screen TV, a huge bathroom with 2 sinks, bath, shower, etc, and a balcony overlooking the pedestrianised street below.

We ate breakfast in the conservatory - too much to choose from at the buffet and all fresh and beautifully presented! We also ate in 2 of the Hotel's restaurants - Bully Ranch (good for burgers etc) and the Swiss Chalet (good for Fondues etc). We didn't try their fine dining Ludwig's as it was a bit pricey - but perhaps nice for a special occasion.

Both nights after our meal we sat in the King's Club bar to have a drink and relax. There were 2 excellent singers/ musicians to entertain us and it was a nice way to round off an evening.

The spa area looked beautiful but we didn't actually use it - perhaps if the weather had been unkind we would have. However, the sun was shining so the only part we did use (after a 3 hour walk along the Vail trail!) was the gorgeous outdoor pool and loungers. Heaven for weary legs!

We were absolutely "smitten" with Vail and would not hesitate to recommend the Sonnenealp to anyone visiting the area.

  • Liked — The whole package!
  • Disliked — $20 nightly charge for valet parking - a bit cheeky on top of accom rate!

Stayed here just one night on a small road trip through Colorado. This hotel exceeded our expectations. Great convenient location able to walk to everything in town. Staff was extremely courteous with every question. Loved the room, we went with just a king room but size was great and bathroom was large with a neat shower. Small balcony overlooked parking courtyard, nothing special as to the view but we were mostly in the town. Turn down service was nice. Price was decent compared to Vail and Denver for the type room.
