Enjoyable stay at the hotel. Service was great (staff called you by name - which is something you don't experience very often any more) and the breakfast was unbelievable. in the heart of Vail. Also has some type of partnership with golf course so tee times were no problem. Rooms were large and bathroom had heated floor tiles.

we live on the front range. i contacted the hotel directly for my reservation and was able to get a wonderful deal, given that it was springtime and the town was still in a slow season.
the hotel experience was just wonderful .the staff was exceptional. the spa is very welcoming- my husband and i spent a day reading by the indoor spa fireplace on the day it snowed this past week while we were there. (yes, snow in june, but then 78 degrees 2 days later... pack for a variety of weather when coming to the mountains).
vail this time of year was very quiet- a welcome treat to us since we were really searching for a restful experience. the gondola was to open the following week. lots of deals at restaurants- 50% off entrees at la tour, $35 prix fixe at sweet basil, 25% off at bully ranch, etc...
ate at the swiss chalet and found it to be one of the most fun dining experiences that we had- great food and very memorable. la tour had unbelievable lobster, but the staff's aloof attitude left much to be desired and my husband and i decided that we would never go back- they were too stuck on themselves to give good service. sweet basil- you just cannot go wrong! amazing food (toffee dessert is a must) and staff.
as far as ludwigs, i must say that it was a daily joy to have breakfast there. great buffet in a charming atmosphere- right by the river- and the staff were nothing but exceptional to us. it made for an absolutely wonderful way to start the day.
the concierge arranged for us to be taken to the top of vail pass with our bikes so that we could ride back down- they also had bikes that you could rent. i would definitely recommend riding vail pass to anyone who likes a good view!
in general, we loved our stay. we enjoyed the fact that everything was quiet this time of the year. we came back thoroughly relaxed and loved every moment, even the snow!

After spending much time reading reviews from Trip Advisor, I decided to book my stay at the Sonnenalp. Thank you all for your input and reliable reviews. Our stay was simply perfect. The hospitality was exceptional and combined with the beautiful location and wonderful amenities, there was not a flaw to be found. I am considering making this a yearly trip and would not waste a second looking at other hotels.

The Sonnnenalp is a great place; spacious, well-appointed rooms, lovely food (with plenty of choce) and live entertainment every evening in the bar. For all the positives it is not without the odd kitsch touch - the staff all being dressed in bavarian costumes for example. However on balance this adds to the charm and comes from the owners obvious pride in his family's roots. One point to note if you are without kids. We were there in American Spring Break and the kids really took over the swimming pool/spa area etc. Bit of a shame there couldn't have been an hour a day or similar that was adults only. Couple of thoughts on Vail if you are venturing to ski in North America for the first time as opposed to Europe (as we were). The plus points are all related to the actual skiing; fantastic snow conditions and efficient lift infrastructure. The negatives are the eating and apres ski; most on mountain dining is self-service and very focussed on burger and chips etc. the apres ski is really low key and all the bars seem to be closed about 11ish. All in all however we had a great holiday and would definitiely go back to both the Sonnenalp and Vail.

Sonnenalp Resort is a winner in Vail. The resort is very well maintained, with appealing, understated Bavarian decor (you won't feel like you're at Oktoberfest).

We visited during the off season, which meant that very few of the shops in the village were open. However, as non-skiers, we appreciated the beauty of the area--as well as the great values. It was fun to walk around, and we enjoyed the spa as well as relaxing in the room.

Ludwig's for breakfast was excellent and the casual restaurant is just OK. The Swiss Chalet was a unique experience (fondue, raclette), but I really didn't enjoy the food. Were I to do it again, I'd try one of the restaurants beyond the resort--a few are open in off season.

The service was great throughout.

This was our 4th spring trip to the Sonnenalp. The hotel and staff are outstanding. Everyone from the bellmen/front desk staff/ restaurant staff and housekeeping are extremely courteous...almost to a fault. The rooms are comfortable, we've always rented a lodgepole suite which includes a fireplace, and walking distance to Vail village and the slopes. There's a shuttle bus stop across the street too. Can't give this place a good enough review....we'll be back next spring!

Stayed at the Sonnenalp first week of March. Although I fancied a holiday in the snow, I didn't want to ski and the Sonnenalp seemed the perfect place to stay having looked at the reviews. Everything about it was perfect and it has that rare combination of 5 star facilities and the personal touch of somewhere much smaller. The hotel has a lot of character and, although quite large, the spaces are broken up well so that it feels much more intimate. We were upgraded upon check-in at no extra charge from a Juniper room to a Lodgepole Suite with a fireplace and it was beautiful. Lots of wood everywhere, lovely bathroom, plenty of storage with two wardrobes and fresh cookies at turndown! Breakfast was excellent, we chose to eat out on the terrace, and we also ate in the bar (chocolate cake to die for), the Bully Ranch and Ludwig's. The meal we had at Ludwig's on the last night was really something special and I would thoroughly recommend it. We also ate at Sweet Basil in Vail village during our stay which was nice but not in the same class at Ludwig's in my opinion. The snow was deeper than I've ever experienced and as non-skiers we had no shortage of activities to choose from. We used the spa in the hotel quite a lot which is nice but it's not that big and gets busy between 4pm and 7pm with skiers coming back from the slopes. We also travelled up on the Gondola from Lionshead which is free to non-skiers after 2pm. We spent a day in Beaver Creek (nice, but not as nice as Vail in my opinion, great if you have kids but it's quite fake looking in that Disneyland style). We went snowmobiling with Piney River Ranch and, the highlight of our trip, dogsledding with Mountain Mushers. It's fairly expensive but well worth it and we had a great time. You're on the sleds for quite a while (we had one each) and the trip is 6 miles long (3 miles up the mountain and 3 miles back down). One additional point to note about Vail is the altitude. We travelled from the UK on a direct flight to Denver and then headed straight up into the mountains with CME transfers which gave us no time to acclimatise. I wouldn't do this again because by the time we arrived I felt jet lagged and nautious. It took 24-36 hours to get over that and, only being there for a week, this was too long. If you're travelling from the UK, take my advice and spend the first night in Denver. Then you can travel up to Vail the next day in daylight so you'll enjoy the scenery and hopefully not feel as ill as we did. Would I stay at the Sonnenalp again? Definitely! I just wish it was closer to home!
