“Loved this hotel”
Reviewed 19 February 2007

I really did love this hotel. I came to Vail for a wedding. I stayed in the two bedroom suite. Both rooms had huge bathrooms with large tubs. This hotel is not a condo...no fridge, etc. I will state upfront that the reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I did not feel there was a lot of accommodation for my small children...healthy foods, etc...so if you aren't traveling with small children I could see that you might give it more stars.

I actually thought the room service was just okay...and the spa services (got massage and facial) were only okay, hotel itself was nice and I enjoyed working out while I was there.

The location of the hotel couldn't be beat. You are close to everything...shops, the lifts, dining and with their free car shuttle (in a lexus, mind you) to dinner was wonderful! It helped us from having to trek to dinner in the snow with our heels on.

The staff was very nice and really went beyond to help me with so many things. I would return if I ever find a need to be in Vail again.

Stayed December 2006

We spent our 10 day honeymoon at the lovely Sonnenalp in Vail. We loved it. We stayed in a Lodgepole suite, with its own (gas) fireplace. It was one of the new rooms (they have recently built a new wing) with a balcony - unfortunately it was overlooking the road and the restaurant across the road and we were only on the first floor, but we were never out there anyway.

The outdoor hot tub and (indoor) spa were fabulous and made the holiday for me (the wife).

The piano bar and fireplace were a lovely touch and the breakfast room was just spectacular - with a glass ceiling and glass walls, wonderful when the sun was out.

It was expensive, but it was worth it.

We just stayed at the Sonnenalp last week and were very disappointed with the hotel. It was worn and dated, the refrigerator was broken, the toilet was backed up and the garage couldn't get our car out for us because the garage door was broken. Some five star hotel! All this for over $900 per night? We have traveled all over the world and have stayed in many 5 star hotels but this was the least deserving of the rating. It was located very well if you are there to just ski but the facility is overrated.

The Sonnenalp is in a central location, close to the shops...nice areas to go for a walk. The breakfast buffet at the Sonnenalp is top shelf ... impressive presentation with a great variety : reminded me almost exactly of my hotel breakfast buffets in Switzerland ! Room service was good.... bathrooms large & modern.Got a good deal on the room (off season in October), would not want to pay winter rates !

What a great place to stay! We enjoyed practically everything about this hotel. It had a intimate feel, professional and friendly staff, good restaurants, and a great location at the edge of Vail Village. We had a Mill Creek Suite that felt more like a little home than a hotel room. The bathroom was spacious with towels aplenty, there was a little sitting area with a fireplace and television, and the bed was upstairs in a loft area. The room had a nice view out over the swimming pool towards Gore Creek - very pretty. Over the course of our 5 day stay, we managed to eat at the Swiss Chalet, Ludwig's and the Bully Ranch restaurants, and all were good. The breakfast buffet was on par with some of the best we've had on our German vacations. We used the concierge service a few times, and they were friendly and helpful each time. We took one of the hotel's guided hikes one day, and we did the hotel's bike ride from Vail Pass another day, both of which were fun. The hotel has an extremely talented musician who plays in the lounge in the evenings, and we had a great time one night listening to his music while reading books and playing games in the adjacent library. We also spent one afternoon in the spa getting massages and otherwise relaxing. All in all, we can't say that we found much to complain about here. We hope to go back again someday soon, and highly recommend the Sonnenalp to anyone!

  • Liked — Intimate feel to the entire hotel and the feeling of German welcome
  • Disliked — Construction noise from Vail Village
  • Tips/Secrets — Make time one evening to listen to the lounge musician
