“Just so-so”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2009

Keeping in mind that our travel was during off-season, I was a bit disappointed in Iron Horse. The restaurant is closed for the season and the front desk isn't accessible between 10pm and 8am. However, I can understand that the facility has a prime location for winter guests, for the summer it's a mediocre place but a good price. We stayed in a 2 bedroom condo with 3 children and 2 adults. The rooms were nice, a bit squeezed for a family of 5 and the outdoor balconies looked less than safe; wobbly railings!
The kids visited the swimming pool and hot tub area. Its was alright, but nothing that impressed me. We also visited the fitness center and it is very well equipped, clean and easy access to the locker rooms. The fitness center was only open from 8am - 10pm, so early risers are out of luck!

We just got back from our Spring Break Trip and stayed in Unit 4113. It was decorated beautifully and was great for all of us, but the area was loud. We heard the buses run and a lot of semis coming in and out taking commodities to the Restaurant. We stayed last year and had a quiet condo. Did not see a great upgrade in the gym and the equipment is not so great. If you like to cook then don't rent this condo, because they are individually owned and the cooking equipment was terrible. I am not impressed that they changed the restaurant, it used to be better. The tubs both needed some draino and lightbulbs were out in both bathrooms. Like I said the unit is beautiful, but the cleaning people could do a better job cleaning the units.

We booked a 2 bedroom unit as we were traveling with friends. We were fortunate that we got a unit in Bldg D (# 5094) which is right at the level for the ski in/out. The staff was very attentive both at the front desk and in the bar and restaurant. The guys were able to rent their ski equipment right on the property. I appreciated the fact that there is a secure garage so no need to scrape snow/ice off the car in the morning.

The food in the restaurant was excellent -everyone in our party loved their selection.

I understand from the other reviews that some of the unit don't seem to be as well care for as ours was so I was thrilled with ours. It was perfect. I loved the decor - wanted to copy it for our cabin in Sugar Mountain, NC :-).

We would definitely stay there again so the need/oppty arise.

Enjoy.

4 of us drove from Saint Louis to Winter Park and arrived at 8:00 AM. Check-in time was not until 4:00 PM. We asked if they had a room ready for us and they said YES! After driving all night this was a welcome surprise. The room was very small for 4 people but we managed. The room was VERY clean and the hotel employees and the folks at the ski rental shop were GREAT! Very convenient to the ski lifts. Great place to stay and ski!

Just got back from a 4 night stay in Winter Park, CO at the Iron Horse Resort. The Iron Horse is large condo/resort located along the ski in/ ski out corridor which takes you to the base of winter park mountain, right at the Zyphyr Express chair lift. My husband and his friend enjoyed the easy access to the slopes, although they did say at times it flattened out so you had to push yourself along for a bit (they snowboarded).

The lodge has a small restaurant, Tabernash Tavern, we did not eat there during our stay, but reservations are recommended during ski season as the one time we did try to grab a bite, they were booked until 8pm (it was 6:30). They have a bar that has a decent variety of beers on tap and a wine list that is larger than you would think for such a small restaurant. Servers were all very friendly. The lodge staff was also very friendly and helpful.

There is an indoor/outdoor pool, part of the pool is indoors and part out. It is heated so it's tolerable during the winter. They also have two hot tubs outside to help you relax after a day of skiing (or shopping). The fitness center is small, but has the basics if you're wanting to workout (treadmills, variety of weight machines and few free weights). Make sure to stop by the front desk before heading to the hot tub or pool as they don't keep pool towels in the pool area (too many people stealing them is what I was told), or just bring a towel from your room.

There were three of us (my husband, me & his friend) on this trip and we booked a studio room. The room had a full kitchen, gas fireplace, dinning table, sofa w/ pull out bed and a murphy bed (bed that is pulled out from the wall), bathroom and balcony. Near the entrance to the room there was a great tiled floor and hooks for coats and gear which worked out well since you'll have wet, possibly muddy shoes when you get back from being out.

The lodge is on the less expensive side (~$140/night), but well worth the value in my eyes. The location was great and there was plenty of room for the three of us.

Called to confirm reservation and late arrival from airport and the hotel couldn't find it. Supposedly one person has access to reservations on their computer and they were off?!? It took over 1 hour to check-in and we were the only ones at the counter. Aside from the fact they coudn't locate our reservation; the computers weren't working. I also understand that each unit is individually owned but they should be held to a certain standard...in our unit the couch was filthy and the toilet didn't work properly. Take note-studios are extremely small. Few pros such as ski in/out, onsite ski rentals, and free wifi. Cons far outweigh the pros and we will not stay here again.

  • Liked — Wifi, ski in/out, parking garage, and on-site ski rentals
  • Disliked — Poor management, furniture dirty, facility currently under renovation

We don't normally stay in this kind of place, so it was a real treat for us (extenuating circumstances at another lodging and final-week pricing sweetened the deal).

The ski-in, ski-out feature really rocked (especially since we were on the same floor). The access from Mary Jane wasn't a problem, and we were even skiing with a seven year old. So nice to be able to lunch in our own place instead of in the car in the lot.

We took a one bedroom, which meant the kids had a Murphy bed in the living room area, which worked out fine for us. My husband and I had privacy, the kids had a TV. The decor was somewhat cliche-southwesty, but still pleasant to be around. Kitchen was fully stocked with glasses, dishes, etc., and the cleaning staff ran the dishwasher every morning as part of the normal cleanup.

Great hot-tub area outside, with one of those half in and half out swimming pools. The kids had a lot of fun alternating between throwing snowballs and climbing in and out of the pools.

Generally, things were clean, if a little worn around the edges. But what can you expect from a hotel in a ski area? People are bumping skis and boots along the walls and floors all winter - it's bound to get a little beat up after a couple of years.

All in all, we loved it, and would love to stay there again when finances and rates permit!

  • Liked — Ski-in, ski-out access; fireplace in the room
  • Disliked — The game room was pretty lame.
