It's no Six Flags, but for the location and price, it's a fun place. Unlimited soda, great water park, lots to do for little kids.

I have been to several Six-flags corporate meat markets where you feel like you are there for them to squeeze ever cent out of your captive self... $10 slices of pizza - a few key feature rides then a bunch of the same old whole your wallet is empty.

This park has a great family feel - caring staff - mostly good local students from the area plus a simple layout and decent rides. You can explore some freedom to roam for your 11-12 year olds knowing the park is well supervised and not so expansive that the can get lost.

Of Particular merit is the Park Manager Jerry Brick who for sure gets how to run a park and the Waterpark Manager Jackie Swift who has poured her heard into the place in her years working up through the ranks.

Unless your are looking for Disney... you won't be dissapointed

Fountain drinks are included in the ticket prices so you don't have to worry about being thirsty or paying crazy amounts of money for drinks. And you don't have to carry around a $15 souvenir cup!! Rides for all ages and free entertainment (live shows) when we go. Not sure if this is every day? Decent food options for sale too.

I've been to LC dozens of times over the past 25 years, and it gets better every time.

We started going to Lake Compounce before the water park was installed, when it it was basically a couple of rides, a train, and a sandy beach. I recently brought my nephew there after not having been in a couple of years. The transformation into a first class (if petite) park has been amazing.

The water park is expanded every year with more slides & attractions, keeping masses of people cool in the hot summer sun. There are areas just for babies and toddlers, as well. If you want to cool off without using the water park, there are two rides that will get you just a bit wet - the Sawmill Plunge log flume and the Thunder Rapids gentle water raft. Both are suitable for kids of most ages (height restrictions apply and are indicated at the park entrance and at each ride).

Don't miss riding the Wildcat (a traditional wood coaster) and the Boulder Dash, a unique wooden coaster that hugs the treed mountainside. For a great view of the surrounding area, take a 30 minute ride on the Sky Ride. This is basically a ski lift, and I would not recommend the Sky Ride for people afraid of heights or parents with slippery young kids. There is nothing but the bar in front of you, and you are high above the rocks. On a hot sunny day be sure you're hydrated and sunscreened before you get on.

Locals' secret - go to the park on Sunday. On summer weekdays the park is packed with busloads of summer camp kids. If you think you'll attend more than once, buy a season's pass and come late in the day. Camps usually clear out by 4pm and the lines for rides thin out. A season pass costs roughly the same as two single tickets, and passholders get three free bring-a-friend passes as well as discounts on food and merchandise.

There are several places to eat at Lake Compounce, from carnival snacks to sit-down restaurants. Soda is free and available at locations all over the park.

The midway games are not my thing, but it seems everyone wins something. In true midway fashion, the prizes are worth about what you pay to play.

In October this family-friendly park turns into the Haunted Graveyard. The water park and kiddy rides are closed, but all of the major rides are open as well as creepy Halloween themed attractions.

If you live in the NYC tri-state area, forget about the long lines and high ticket prices at Great Adventure in NJ. Go to Lake Compounce in CT instead. I went with my wife and 2 kids, ages 11 and 13, and we all had a great time. We had also gone about 4 years ago. The park is clean and well-maintained and definitely worth the trip. You can even buy your tickets online and save a couple of bucks. Lake Compounce is divided into a water park area and a dry rides area, with the notable exception of the "Saw Mill Plunge" Log Flume which is located in the dry area. Boulder Dash and Wildcat are rated as among the BEST wooden roller coasters in the world. The Zoomerang is a great steel roller coaster with a 125' drop, loops and twists, going both forwards and backwards! The Rev-O-Lution and Thunder N' Lightning are two other great newer thrill rides. They also have a kiddle area with plenty of rides for your little tykes. The rides in the water park area are the typical tubes, slides, lazy river and wave pool --- nothing extraordinary. Just good clean fun. Be sure to bring a change of clothes, of course. And BTW, they require shoes and shirts in the dry area. They won't let you on a "dry ride" without a shirt. My daughter wore a 2 piece bikini and they would not let her on the Log Flume. Go figure!
Believe it or not, drinks are free in the park. Yes, free Pepsi everywhere! The food is the usual overpriced burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc. We brought our own sandwiches and chips from home.
We went on a weekday in August and the lines were very short. We were able to go on some rides 2 and 3 times. This place is definitely worth the trip. It may not be as big as Great Adventure or have as many big rides, but it also doesn't have the 45+ minute lines either.
