The northwest part of Connecticut has apparently made a determined effort to keep out major chain establishments -- even when you can find them, they stick out like a sore thumb. This leads to a small town ambiance that makes a relaxing time easy to achieve. Another effect of this effort is that budget lodging is impossible to find. This place is less costly than other inns and B&B's in the region, thus making it a better value, but the exchange is a lack of basic amenities.

The place is pretty much by itself on U.S. Highway 44, just east of Canaan. If you stay here, you'll have to drive to just about everything else.

Spent one night here while relaxing in-between five days of driving through Connecticut and five days of hiking the Appalachian Trail. All rooms are on the second floor, and there is no elevator. Our Room #4 had half-bath (shower and tub are shared), AC, and TV with 72 channels. There was no desk on which to place a laptop or other business work. The floor was original to the house, and thus un-even, but all other parts of the house have been thoroughly modernized. The room was clean, very quiet, and well-maintained.

Free amenities include parking, wi-fi, and a made to order breakfast (not a buffet). At any time between 7 and 11 am, the hosts will make a plate of hot food for you, and just about anything you request -- waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon. There's also rolls, juice, milk and coffee. Service is definitely with a smile.

There is a common area where one could read, listen to music, or watch a video. There is a walk-around porch on both floors with wicker furniture to relax in. No smoking is permitted inside.

Anywhere else I would not be happy to pay over $100 for a room with minimal furniture, un-even floor, and shared shower. In NW Connecticut, the lack of chain lodging means such a price is to be expected. Come to this area for quiet, relaxation, and ambiance; but not for value.

Room Tip: Note which rooms have shared toilet.

Just what we were looking for in a B&B. Not interested in paying high prices for lace and Victorian primness.

The Locust Tree was great. My family and I stayed here for the weekend. I have two small children that the inn keepers treated like there grand kids I could not have asked to have a better stay the food was just like my mom made right there cooked in a spotless kitchen we ate in there perfectly simply dining room. Watched tv in the guest living room on a big screen or in our rooms the rooms which were very comfotable I slept great I really liked the mattress and every thing reminded me of my home growing up in new england. My children had a very large yard to run and play in safely.

Room Tip: 4 is a half bath & is very large.

We had a room with a private bath. Very clean and comfortable. B+B is located very close
to restaurants and a short drive to Norfolk Ct where there are cultural events. John and
Heidi are local people and know the area. The breakfest is made to order , whatever a guest would enjoy.

We were struggling to find somewhere to stay near the Litchfield Loop for a Sat/Sun night stay, so we were relieved to find this place.

It was not as nice as most of the B&Bs we have stayed in in the States but it was good value. The B&B is on the main road into Canaan but is set back a long way with a very large garden front and back. There is a verandah running all the way round the property which was nice to sit out on. We had a queen bedded room with TV and free WiFi and the bedroom and bathroom were spotless.

Heidi the owner was friendly and helpful with restaurant suggestions but was not always there and coffee etc was not always available. Breakfast was ok but not great. It was fine as a place to sleep and we loved the town of Canaan - like stepping back in time - with some great places to eat. It was also really handy for doing the Litchfield Loop and seeng the 'Fall Color'.
