“The Best Sunset In Norway”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Brekkestranda wasn’t the fanciest place I stayed in Norway, but it certainly had the most wonderful sunset view. We were there in June, and the sunset lasted for hours. Brilliantly located on the fjord, we were able to see it for miles. There’s a great outdoor space for enjoying nature’s beauty.

I stayed here to break up the drive from Alesund to Bergen into two days. The service was excellent (Konstantine rocks!), and we devoured a late dinner, thrilled to discover their kitchen was still open after a long day of driving. After our wonderful dinner, we were disappointed that breakfast was so basic. The dining room was lovely, with a wall of windows providing a great outlook onto the fjord.

The room itself has a rustic feel, perhaps a little too rustic for my tastes. The wall unit heaters could use updating, and the bathroom is in desperate need of a complete renovation. The rock floor was rough and didn’t really dry after our showers. I was also wary of the bathroom heater, which definitely warmed the room, but seemed too exposed.

One note about booking a night here… we had to track down an alternate e-mail address from their Facebook page after queries to the one listed on their website went unanswered.

Overall, this place has a great location. It just requires some maintenance and upkeep to reach its potential.

What a great location and chance to get away and see the fjords. Really loved this location and my room opening up on the back side to a porch with a perfect, unobstructed view of the river. Dining onsite was nice and easy, and the service and people were super nice. Very relaxing and just what I was looking for to get away for a day. My room was clean, I got a fresh pot of coffee right away, and the hotel was unique and like a log cabin. Would visit again anytime I am back in Norway.

A little out of the ordinary. The hotel is constructed so as to not have any 90 degree angels. Its a funny building. The staff is nice, food quite good, and the coffee is at least a little warm. Free wifi and an excellent view of Sognefjorden raises the overall experience.

The hotel is located close to the fjord. Rooms are basic, and the bathroom needs renovation. The architect has designed a fancy but not very functional building. Dining area is small and a little dark. A basic breakfast is included in the price. A la carte dinner is served. Food is ok. Service was very courteous when the TV in the room broke down.

We stayed one night at this cosy hotel during a family trip in Western Norway. Located directly at a fjord with a beautiful view, hotel looking like a romantic dream with grass roof and all wooden walls, this was just the right place for us.
We were in one of the renovated rooms. The room had a small balcony, not very private since the neighbour balcony looked directly at ours, but still nice with a perfect view. Bed very comfortable. Bathroom very dark with just one light at the entrance, not close to the mirror. Also no electricity for hairdryer close to a mirror. Curtains very light, meaning it was impossible to sleep until very late since the sunset is late and the sun shines directly into the room.
Dinner was good, but not more than that. Would have preferred a more traditional Norwegian meal. Breakfast was good.
Friendly and helpful personnel.
Recommended in spite of the shortcomings.

Stayed one night at the Brekkestranda Hotel in July 2008. Only ended up their as everything else nearer Bergen full and had to phone them to get a booking (don't expect a reply to an email!!).

Despite ending up there as no where else had any vacancies was very pleasantly surprised as a really nice place.

Fantastic location with unbelievable dreamy view across fjord about 1Km from Brekke (which has a couple of shops).

Attractive rustic "Norwegian Style" rooms in sort of log cabins in a linked row facing across a grassy area on edge of Sognefjord. Cabins have "green roofs” i.e. sort of growing peat coverings which is supposed to be ecofriendly and make them cool in summer and warm in winter. Terrible weather and when we arrived the room was cold but an hour later (thanks to the room’s excellent insulation) the heater had got it nice and cosy. Room was good size with typical Norwegian bathroom i.e. no specific shower tray and so water gets everywhere after shower. However lots of hot water. Only complaint was that we could not get the bathroom underfloor heater to work and so floor was a bit chilly. Should have complained to staff but could not be bothered and it did not spoil our stay.

Had a decent dinner and breakfast good.

Staff pretty friendly but not especially charismatic.

Overall it was a good place to stay. Not luxury but still comfortable.

Only major thing was that they are building something next door and as it did not get dark till 11pm the construction only stopped at 11pm - and started at 8am the next morning. Outside the noise was quite obtrusive - especially given the isolated and tranquil location. As it was quite chilly we could not hear the work in our room as we had the double glazed windows shut. However I think the noise would have been a major problem if the weather had been nice and we had been sitting outside.

  • Liked — Comfortable good size room
  • Disliked — Bathroom floor cold
