Boated to Exxex for many years. Alway went to Griswold Inn for Dinner.
Favorite menu item, Prime Rib with salad and baked potato. There cobble is out of this world. They also serve a corn relish dish before dinner which I never see anywhere else.
This time there was no prime rib, no salad included with dinner, no relish, no cobbler! Overpriced 1/2 slab of ribs for two $70 with tip. Very noisey table of intoxicated people sat next to us. Last trip to Griswolds for us.

Certainly it is difficult to have specific memories of a place visited some time ago and find that changes have been made. That stated, what most people share with us when they make a nostalgic trip to The Gris is they are delighted it’s as they remembered. Of course they are referring to the ambience – authentic and as nautically-rich as ever. It is unfortunate you felt your experience with us was not all you had anticipated.

Should you decide to try us again…We offer our classic Prime Rib on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, and a fruit cobbler as a dessert special. Though a cobbler is frequently offered as a special, it was unfortunate that it was not the case when you visited. We don’t know when you last experienced the Inn prior to this visit but a number of years ago, based on customer comments/demand, we significantly increased the variety of our salad selections. All are priced à la carte. We do, however, offer a starch and/or vegetable with each entrée which is included in the price.

Times have changed and we are operating in a challenging economic environment: our prices have gone up commensurate with rising food costs. Though we have not had a “free” relish tray in years, we did offer it on our menu at a nominal cost – a mere $4.50 for two! Though it was the least expensive item, it was also by far the least popular item of our starter selections.

We make our menu decisions based on customer comments as well as ordering statistics and pricing considerations. Oh that we could please all of the people all of the time…We try our very best. We are sorry that you felt your experience fell short.

Respectfully,
The Paul Family

This place oozes atmosphere back to the grand era of Connecticut/Sound steamers from the 1820s-1930s. The centerpiece of a quaint classic New England town on the Connecticut River with a number of nice shops to visit. We had lunch in the Tap Room. Great potato pancakes! Excellent chowda and fried clams, Cobb salad. Excellent friendly service (Thx Luann!). Liked the home label Revolutionary Amber Ale. Original old floor boards, loaded with old ship pic/poster memorabilia. A really nice diversion on the way to or from Mohegan/Foxwoods which is a short 15 miles away. We had dinner there some yesrs ago, liked it, and happy to return.

Would love to stay at the Griswold Inn at some point; it's a "special occasion," kind of place! The dinner we had was enough to bring us back for more. Wonderful food in a romantic atmosphere! New England classics such as chicken pot pie, and baked stuffed shrimp...and a roaring fire to really warm up a February evening!

Room Tip: Hope to get to stay soon. For now, can only heartily recommend the dining room!

This B&B has a famous reputation and has fairly good reviews but do not let it fool you. The rooms are old and lack charm vs that vintage feeling of a B&B, window air conditions that make alot of noise, no TV's in any rooms, and the worst customer service I have seen in a very long time by the front desk staff.

We were given a gift certificate for a wedding gift. When we arrived, we gave the staff the gift certificate and thought all was fine. What we did not know until after the fact is that we accidentally brought everything except the actual gift certificate (our friends had made a very cute card with certificate that we though was the original) as part of the gift .

The front desk staff took it upon themselves to contact the purchaser, confirmed the gift was bought for us and then proceeded to refuse to accept it because they insisted on having the original gift certificate. The kept threatening to "charge our card" because they insisted on having the original. We lived an hour and a half away and going home was clearly not practical but she clearly expected us to go and get the document. What she could have said was something like "I'm sorry for the problem with the gift certificate. I will hold off on charging your card until you get home and send it back to us. If we don't receive it by a set time, we would be forced to charge your card".

We were so aggravated with the attitude of the front desk manager, her aggressive and confrontation nature, that we left and checked out. Her lack of customer service skills was unacceptable.

We went to a Hyatt near Uncasville and had a great time.

We truly regret you felt your unique situation was not handled to your satisfaction during your encounter with The Griswold Inn. This is highly unusual for us and is not our “Standard Operating Procedure". Our staff typically is called out for being extremely friendly, courteous and helpful so the report of your interaction came as quite a surprise.

After learning of your experience, we investigated and addressed this particular situation with the front desk staff and our accounting department. We sell hundreds of gift certificates every year and, because they never expire, we have thousands of them to track at any given time. Therefore it is necessary to have a firm policy/procedure for our front desk staff to follow. That stated, there is never an excuse for a surly attitude no matter what the situation, and as you felt you were treated in a rude manner, we are very sorry. Moving forward we are also reviewing our gift certificate policy to determine if it is possible, from an accounting perspective, to make a procedural change. In the meantime, as you know, we have provided a full refund.

We are also quite surprised about your specific comments regarding your room since we generally receive very positive responses regarding the charm of our accommodations and our establishment.

We do regret the extremely unfortunate circumstance and that you did not choose to stay with us. Should you decide to give us another try, we always welcome you back!

Respectfully,
The Paul Family

I stayed here and also has a wonderful dinner in the restaurant. I can remember my grandparents raving about this place where they stayed on their honeymoon. The Inn is very original and only mildly updated over the years. You still get the feeling of yesteryear and I loved that. Walking through the village of Essex is special and you're right on the Connecticut River. The Locamotive ride is also worth checking out with or without your kids.

Stayed for the 1st time at the 'Gris' & all I can say is "we'll be back!"
From the warm welcome at check-in by Kim, who I had made the reservation with..(where does that actually happen?) we knew we had found some place special. Our suite was located across from the Main Inn, above a gift shop (worth the extra $$ to upgrade)) & it was perfect. Authentic & charming, loved the view of Main Street, possibly 1 of the most picturesque town/villages we've ever visited. The Tap Room which we had been told was a "can't miss" is like stepping back in time. Tap Room Menu fit the bill, offering a great Clam Chowder and Fish & Chips for late lunch after traveling. Kim at the hotel desk had suggested the Wine Bar to us for dinner & WOW!! The room itself is worth seeing, the most knowledgeable staff served us a delicious Tapas style meal & nothing disappointed. The band that played Friday night, 60's covers-AMAZING! It was loud & crowded but we were looking for a great night away & we found it. The energy in that room was incredible.. Breakfast in the morning could possibly offer guests a little more but over all it was fine. My wife found quite a few treasures at their gift shop, Goods & Curiosities, there too staff was helpful. We walked through the village window shopping & down to the docks to enjoy the display of boats in the river before we left. I know exactly why this Inn has been open for 200+ years & like I said- we'll be back!

Griswold Greetings! It is SO nice to find guests who really “get” and appreciate what The Griswold Inn experience is all about - and you really did! It makes us so happy when guests avail themselves of all that an authentic and spirited place like The ‘Gris’ has to offer – three completely different dining experiences under one roof plus live music every night of the week from Sea Shanties to Swing to Jazz to Banjo…And of course there's enchanting Essex village...

Thank you for taking the time to submit this wonderful review of your recent stay with us and calling out our staff as the professional and engaging people they are! We look forward to your return visit!

I stayed in one of the full sized beds annex rooms (room 21) at the Griswold Inn for 2 nights. I was there with my boyfriend for one of my friend's weddings. Many of my other friends were also staying in the annex rooms as well. We are all in our late 20's to early 30's and loved our stay! The annex rooms are in an attached building with a front door a few away from the main door to the Griswold Inn and Wine room. We used a key for the front door to the building which also worked for our room. For the front door, you had to make sure that it was tightly shut so that it would lock. Not really a problem though considering the individual rooms locked. However, every night I did make sure it was locked before going to bed. It seems like an adorable quaint town and I'm sure it's fine, but safety first! =)

Each of the annex rooms are different with different carpets and wallpaper. It's definitely old and outdated but in a good way with lots of character. The rooms have a lot of exposed wood and a fire extinguisher in every room! Each of our rooms had a wall a/c unit. Ours was broken but we didn't need it. We were on the first floor facing the street and slept with the windows open and it wasn't loud outside at all! All of the bathrooms are on the smaller side which is to be expected and have a small stand up shower stall. Good enough for me! They also provided shampoo, hairdryer, iron/board, etc which was good because I forgot mine. Our annex room 21 had a full sized bed pushed against the wall, a nightstand, a dresser w/mirror, 2 wing chairs, a small table, and an incredibly small closet (more like a foot wide hole in the wall? It was enough for my boyfriend's suit, my dress and the ironing board that is kept there so that wasn't a problem for me).

They also have a happy hour in the tap room which we enjoyed. I think the price of beer or certain beers was reduced? They served popcorn, cheese and crackers, and these yummy breaded pulled pork sliders (I think that's what they were? Either way I like them!) Just a warning though, no one in this town seems to serve food after 10pm! The wedding we went to ended early and we couldn't find food ANYWHERE!

I thought that complimentary breakfast was good. They had coffee, tea, hot chocolate, orange and grapefruit juices, oatmeal, bagels & cream cheese, bread, 2 types of muffins, yogurt, fruit salad, a few cereals... I might be missing something? It wasn't a ton, but I thought more than adequate for a complimentary breakfast!

Also, one thing we thought was interesting is that all of the rooms have a speaker either on the wall or built in but they don't work. We inquired about it at check out and were informed that they used to pipe classical music through the speakers. Thank goodness they stopped that!

The staff was also great! They even filled up my cooler with ice for me! They were very friendly and accommodating.

Overall, this inn is adorable and in an adorable little town! There are many little shops and restaurants around. Yes this inn is dated but it has so much history!

Thanks ever so for such "high marks" on your review of our property. We're so glad you found your accommodations charming and that they worked well for you and your friends attending a wedding in town.

We have 33 guest accommodations at The Griswold Inn and no two are alike. Most of them have been renovated and are quite lovely, furnished in quality antiques and period reproductions. The Annex Rooms are the the only ones on property that are not yet refurbished but are slated for such. They are clean and simple spaces and super value-priced to reflect their current character, yet their prime location allows guests to avail themselves of all the Inn and our Main Street location have to offer.

We host numerous wedding groups throughout the year and find that many guests don't spend much time in their room during these stays, but at the associated events or in our famous Tap Room! Thus, the value rate is perfect for some!

We appreciate your kind review and do hope you will return and experience one of our renovated accommodations. There is a big uptick in these spaces and given your enthusiasm about the Annex, we're sure you won't be disappointed.

Looking forward...

Respectfully,
The Paul Family
