Groton Inn and Suites
Ranked #5 of 14 Hotels in Groton
Reviewed 2 June 2006

My Husband and I came to see our son get married. Our stay was from May 25 through May 30, 2006. The reception was to be held at the Groton Inn on May 27, 2006 and they offered a special rate for guests so upon the recommendation of the bride and groom, we stayed there. There is good news and bad. We had booked about three months ahead and were told that we would have a king size bed and a smoking room. Our plane was delayed from California and we did not arrive until 1:00 a.m. on the morning of the May 26, 2006. We were given a small smelly room with two double beds. As we were exhausted we stayed there with the intention of speaking to the manager the next day. We received at telephone call at about 3:00 p.m. The day manager was rude and condescending. She stated that we did not make these requests and that we needed to take what we got as it was part of a special rate for guests of the wedding party. I was mortified at her tone and reaction. As we had so much to do we just let this go.
The reception was wonderful. The service was unbelievable and the food first rate. The banquet manager was a professional and took care of all our needs. She deserves an A+++++
The night after the wedding we returned to our room at about 9:00 p.m. Our room was above a party that was so loud that our floor was vibrating. It took three trips down stairs and two telephone calls and finally the night desk clerk moved us to another room. The room was adequate however the air conditioner in the bedroom did not work. She was totally overwhelmed with guests coming in and a very unruly group of young people who were leaving their room and making noise in the lobby as well as the hallway. She received no help from management.
Housekeeping was excellent, we left a tip that reflected the service. The management of the Groton Inn was horrible with no skills in customer service. Not once did management offer an apology or acknowledge that any thing had happened. It is very sad that the Groton Inn has a support staff that is excellent however the management is incompetent.

I checked in quite late one night. My room was ready, it was in an out building not part of the main hotel. The night front office person was very nice. The first thing I noticed was a bad smell in the common hallways of the main hotel. My room was pretty shabby. I felt like I was in some type of cheap motel. I was right on ground level with a big window that I was not convinced the shades hid. The bedding was worn. The sink was appaling with huge cracks and very worn faucets. The shower enclosure appeared new. The bathroom was tiny. Heating was OK but quickly become too warm due to the small size of the room. TV functioned OK, there was a refrigerator and a small microwave in the room. No other amenities. Bed moderately uncomfortable.

For the best rate, opt for the "flexible room" rate, where they assign a room upon check-in. We got a studio suite with full kitchen! Rooms are nice and clean with a walk-in closet. Every room having a micro and fridge is an excellent touch. Very helpful desk staff.
Bathroom walls need more than just the coat of primer they're currently sporting.
Ordering breakfast off of the "restaurant" menu was a good value, but you're on your own for fresh fruit.
My advice - skip the advertised "Romantic Getaway" deal, which includes dinner for 2 at the so-called restaurant (really a lounge), unless you can't get the flexible room rate. The food is good, but for the same prices you can drive to one of the casinos and have plenty more options (props to the BBQ joint at Mohegan Sun!).
We would definitely stay here again.

Our room was clean...but we were dismayed to find no housekeeping services because of July 4th. Our suite was plain but suitable for what we needed. Our breakfast was super each day...picked off the menu, excellent.
Service at desk was okay...not great but okay.

We stayed in a deluxe suite for two nights. The general hotel facilities were fine, room amenities looked good, space almost enough for an echo, but the bathroom was claustrophobic. The king size bed provided plenty of space but unfortunately little comfort, unless you like sleeping on a trampoline. Inquiries at the front desk regarding a change of rooms or change of mattresses were met with a shrug and "We're sorry, there are no available rooms." Our request for extra blankets (to sleep on) was fulfilled, but provided only minimal improvement. A Comment card was left at the front desk upon our departure stating pretty much the same as is mentioned here. There was no response of any kind from the hotel, not even a form letter acknowledging our concerns. I have traveled to many places around the world (SA, Asia, Europe) over the past 10 years and have always been able to get a decent night's sleep. Not so at the Groton Inn and Suites, sorry to say.
